THE TIRE & GIRDLE
EXPRESS
February 2012
Principal’s Message
Congratulations to the Grade 12’s, who have now completed their first round of
Diploma exams, and are that much closer to graduation. We look forward to seeing
how well you did on those exams! It is hard to believe as it always is at this time of
year, that the school year is already half over.
The second semester has started very smoothly, and we are excited to be offering a
change at the Junior High level. We have started this semester with a junior high
option offered by Mrs. Tammi Wicks called Academic Support. This option is
designed to give those students that want some extra help with a teacher to understand
and work through core curriculum material that they may be struggling with. As well,
it gives students a chance to complete their homework with a teacher present to
answer any questions they may have difficulties with. Not surprisingly, this course
filled up very quickly.
We also welcome back from maternity leave Mrs. Carmen Kneller who is teaching our
Senior high English Program as well as Art options.
Finally, February is one of my favorite months as it actually has a holiday set aside for
being with families. Yes, I do appreciate and enjoy Valentines Day, but spending time
with my family is what brings me the most joy. I think we are very lucky to live in an
area where the government agrees and gives us a day off called Family Day! Please
enjoy this time with your children as families, and enjoy the opportunity to make
positive memories together.
BLAST PROGRAM
On February 7, we held the BLAST PROGRAM for all
Junior High Students. BLAST stands for
Building Leadership for Action in Schools Today!
“We learned about cigarettes and what they are made out of. One of the women that came to our school, Heather,
taught us about what a cigarette is made of and what gets into your body after you smoke. She also taught us the
difference between a light cigarette and a normal cigarette—and that they are both just as bad for us. She told us
some of the different toxins in a cigarette. There is actually over 7000 toxins that make up a cigarette! Heather
even brought two lungs in to the school so we could see the difference between a smokers lung and a non-smokers
lung. We were even allowed to touch them if we wanted to! Heather told us that smokers will spend about $300
per month and about $13000 in a year on cigarettes.
Dawn taught us about how tobacco was used by the Indigenous peoples. She showed us water pipes, chewing tobacco
and how the Indigenous peoples used the tobacco for it’s healing properties. Dawn taught us about how the
European settlers took advantage of the tobacco and got addicted to it.
Jenn taught us about how the tobacco industries sell their product and target people through advertising.
At the end of this presentation, we took a test and we were able to win prizes. Over all, I think that all the Junior
High students understand more about what will happen to our brain, body, and body functions if we start
smoking.”
