The Laurel Lake mills were organized i n<br />
1881 by John P . Slade, Hon. Robert T. Davi s<br />
and Henry C. Lincoln, with a capital of<br />
$400,000. John P. Slade was elected president<br />
and Abbott E . Slade treasurer, and a<br />
34,000 spindle mill erected, enlarged in 189<br />
6 by the building of an addition 93x161 feet .<br />
The capital was increased to $500,000 i n<br />
1895, and in 1898 reduced to $200,000 and in -<br />
creased to $300,000 . The plant has 59,80 8<br />
frame spindles and 1,628 looms, of which 61 8<br />
are more than 32 inches in width . It em -<br />
ploys 485 hands and has a weekly production<br />
of 8,500 pieces. John P. Slade wa s<br />
president until his death, when he was succeeded<br />
by his son, Leonard N . Slade. Abbott<br />
E. Slade has been treasurer from the organization<br />
of the corporation ; except October ,<br />
1898, to October, 1900, when Edward L .<br />
Anthony held that position . The directors<br />

The Weetamoe mills were incorporate d<br />
in 1871, with $550,000 capital ; Louis L. Bar -<br />
nard, president; D. Hartwell Dyer, treasurer.<br />

French, Jonathan I . Hilliard, F. K. Hill, Will -<br />
iam Lindsey, Francis B. Hood, Henry C . Lincoln<br />
and Elijah C . Kilburn directors. A fivestory<br />
brick mill, 320x74, was erected . The<br />
plant has 13,200 mule and 31,072 frame spindles,<br />
and 1,183 looms of which 108 are mor e<br />
than 32 inches wide. It employs 400 hand s<br />
and has a weekly production of 6,700 pieces .<br />

The Crescent mills, now the property of<br />
the Merchants Manufacturing Company ,<br />
were incorporated in 1871, with a capital of<br />

$500,000, and a mill 339x74 erected, wit h<br />
33,280 spindles and 744 looms . The original<br />
officers were Benjamin Covel, president; Lafayette<br />
Nichols, treasurer, and Benjamin<br />
Covel ; Lafayette Nichols, Daniel A . Chapin ,<br />
William B. Durfee, J. F. Nichols, Joseph<br />
Brady, David F . Brown, G . M. Haffards an d<br />
Alphonso S. Covel, directors. The treasurer s<br />
were : Lafayette Nichols, 1871-1873 ; Richar d<br />
B. Borden, 1873-76 ; Alphonso S. Covel, elected<br />

The Sagamore mills were incorporated i n<br />

A five-story brick mill, 320x73, was erected.<br />
In 1879 the company failed, following financial<br />
irregularities, and was reorganized a s<br />
the Sagamore Manufacturing Company, wit h<br />
a capital of $250,000, increased in 1880 to<br />
$500,000, again increased in 1881 to $750,000 ,<br />
decreased in 1884 to $600,000. and in 188 8<br />
increased to $900,000. A second mill was<br />
built in 1882, No. 1 burned in 1884 and re -<br />
placed by a new structure in 1888. The<br />
plant now has 4,060 mule and 87,456 frame<br />
spindles, with 2,362 looms, of which 854 are<br />
more than 32 inches wide . It employs about<br />
800 hands and has a weekly production of<br />
about 13,000 pieces . The presidents have<br />
been : L. L. Barnard, 1872-76 ; James A .<br />
Hathaway, 1876-79 ; Theodore Dean, 1879 -<br />
1885 ; Charles J. Holmes, 1885-1903 ; Jame s<br />
M. Morton, Jr ., 1903 to present time. Th e<br />
treasurers have been : Francis B. Hood ,<br />
1872-76 ; George T . Hathaway, 1876-79. When<br />
the corporation, Sagamore Manufacturin g<br />
Company, was organized Hezekiah A . Brayton<br />
was elected treasurer, November 6, 1879 ,<br />
and has served in that capacity ever since .<br />
