Solution spinning<br />

Sorbent<br />

A nonwoven fabric used to attract and/or contain fluids. The term is most commonly used to<br />

describe products that are used to clean-up environmental oil spills and around machinery in<br />

a workplace to capture oil and other fluids. Oleophilic fibers, such as from polypropylene, are<br />

widely used in these products.<br />

Specific gravity<br />

Ratio of the mass of a material to the mass of an equal volume of water at 4 o C.<br />

Spin finish<br />

A lubricant applied to fibers to reduce friction and static during processing into yarns and<br />

fabrics.<br />

Spinning<br />

A process by which filaments or fabrics, made from filaments, are generated directly by<br />

passing a molten polymer through a spinneret.<br />

Spinneret<br />

A disc or plate containing many small holes through which molten polymer is extruded to<br />

form filaments. Spinnerets are used in the spunlaid process or production of filaments.<br />

Occasionally the spelling is “spinnerette.”<br />

Spray bonding, Spray bonded<br />

A method of binding fibers to form a fabric. The adhesive binder is sprayed onto the web of<br />

fibers and subsequently dried and cured. See Resin Bonding.<br />
