It is recommended that the Board approve the revised Associate in Fine Arts degree – Art Education
Option approved and submitted by the District Curriculum Committee.
Program: Art Education Option
Associate in Fine Arts
Campus: Forest Park, Florissant Valley, Meramec, Wildwood
Effective: Fall 2009
Impact Statement:
Over the past several semesters it has been very difficult to advise students in this program as to the
appropriate set of courses to take in the 3D and 2D art electives area, especially if they planned to transfer
to the University of Missouri St. Louis to complete a BFA degree.
Previously UMSL’s program had numerous paths leading towards a BFA in Art Education, whereby
students had to select from a list of different studio disciplines (painting, printmaking, etc.) and complete
coursework in those areas in conjunction with education and other academic classes. UMSL, in
discussion with STLCC, has recently consolidated their various discipline options of the BFA in Art
Education into one more manageable program of requirements and has adjusted the requirement list to a
more narrow (and appropriate) set of parameters. A much easier transition now potentially exists for
transfer students, while still allowing them to focus their studies within certain fine art fields. A revision
to the AFA/BFA articulation agreement with UMSL (for Art Education) is, as of this writing, also being
reviewed for formal approval. That revision was developed in response to several issues, including
UMSL’s modified Art Education program. This program revision will address the need for alignment
with both UMSL’s own revision and the updated articulation agreement.
Specific changes, as reflected in the attached revision proposal, were necessitated by UMSL’s decision to
no longer accept ART: 207 as a 3D art elective since it is not a 3 credit class (as are the other studio
classes being accepted), and its willingness- as a result of its revised program’s structure-to allow for
transfer of credit ART: 112 Figure Drawing II or ART: 209 Drawing III. The listing of “Art Electives”
in our current program’s degree requirements actually refers to “2D Art Electives.” The omission of
“2D” is being corrected in this revision, and ART: 185- which has always been offered as EDU: 120- is
being deactivated and removed as an option in the education component of the degree.
There are no additional costs associated with this program revision, as it utilizes already existing courses.
