esearch papers only record <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> druml<strong>in</strong>s by a symbol or by a grid reference with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> text and<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are also large areas <strong>of</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn England for which <strong>the</strong>re are no available maps, such as <strong>the</strong> Tyne valley<br />

<strong>in</strong> Northumberland.<br />

valley illustrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>of</strong> druml<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. Note <strong>the</strong> prom<strong>in</strong>ent streaml<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and drift tails <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wensleydale valley, and<br />

that whilst most druml<strong>in</strong>s occupy <strong>the</strong> lowlands, <strong>the</strong>y can also be seen on high ground. Image is ca. 75 km across <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> foreground<br />

In <strong>the</strong> north <strong>of</strong> England, major druml<strong>in</strong> fields are found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north west counties <strong>of</strong> Lancashire and<br />

Cumbria, particularly <strong>the</strong> lowland areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eden valley and Solway Firth (Holl<strong>in</strong>gworth, 1931) and <strong>the</strong><br />

Lancashire Lowlands around <strong>the</strong> Forest <strong>of</strong> Bowland (Raistrick, 1933). Druml<strong>in</strong>s are also found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yorkshire Dales, particularly <strong>in</strong> Ribblesdale and <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> upper Wensleydale (Fig. 2).<br />

Although <strong>the</strong>y are generally found <strong>in</strong> lowland areas, where <strong>the</strong>y record <strong>the</strong> former flow patterns as ice moved<br />

around topographic obstacles, druml<strong>in</strong>s can be found also at higher altitudes. For example, <strong>the</strong>y occur at up to<br />

600 m OD across <strong>in</strong>terfluve areas <strong>in</strong> upper Wensleydale, demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> ice sheet was capable <strong>of</strong> flow<br />

directions that were <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>of</strong> relief (Mitchell, 1991a,b, 1994). In <strong>the</strong> Yorkshire Dales, druml<strong>in</strong>oid drift<br />

tails have been reported at <strong>the</strong> confluence <strong>of</strong> tributary valleys with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> dales (K<strong>in</strong>g, 1976; Mitchell,<br />

1991a,b).<br />

Detailed field mapp<strong>in</strong>g has been carried out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper Eden and upper Lune valleys, cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

ground from Shap Fells eastwards to <strong>the</strong> Penn<strong>in</strong>e Escarpment, and southwards, from around Appley to <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> druml<strong>in</strong> field at <strong>the</strong> edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> western Penn<strong>in</strong>es (Letzer, 1978, 1987). Here <strong>the</strong> druml<strong>in</strong>s occur on<br />
