CCA08 Far North Coast <strong>Targeted</strong> <strong>Vegetation</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> Executive Summary A targeted vegetation survey <strong>of</strong> floodplain <strong>and</strong> lowl<strong>and</strong> vegetation on the Far North Coast <strong>of</strong> New South Wales was undertaken to fill gaps in knowledge <strong>of</strong> vascular plant biodiversity on the Far North Coast associated with specific environments or l<strong>and</strong> tenures. A combination <strong>of</strong> vegetation formation, geology <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>form was used to r<strong>and</strong>omly stratify sites. The quaternary geology layer <strong>of</strong> the Comprehensive Coastal Assessment (CCA) was used to assist stratification in areas <strong>of</strong> Quaternary s<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> alluvium. Sites were targeted towards the estuarine <strong>and</strong> alluvial plain <strong>and</strong> lower slopes on basalt <strong>and</strong> high <strong>and</strong> low sedimentary quartz geology. A total <strong>of</strong> 346 sites were sampled <strong>and</strong> analysed using a hierarchical agglomerative clustering analysis, followed by analysis to compare the grouping <strong>of</strong> sites. In total, 1027 plant taxa were recorded in the survey, <strong>and</strong> 62 vegetation communities were delineated following numerical analysis <strong>and</strong> expert review. The vegetation varied from structurally <strong>and</strong> floristically simple sedgel<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong> communities to complex mosaics <strong>of</strong> wet sclerophyll, rainforest <strong>and</strong> brush box. <strong>Vegetation</strong> communities were organised into four primary groups based on tidal influence, substrate <strong>and</strong> broad soil type. Group 1 – Saline wetl<strong>and</strong>s; Group 2 – Freshwater, seasonally–permanently inundated soils; Group 3 – Coastal barrier s<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> headl<strong>and</strong>s; Group 4 – Forests on alluvium or finely textured soils <strong>of</strong> coastal floodplains <strong>and</strong> foothills.
