CCA08 Far North Coast <str<strong>on</strong>g>Targeted</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Vegetati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Survey</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

The vegetati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> estuarine <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> alluvial plains<br />

is a complex c<strong>on</strong>tinuum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> floristic distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

abundance with gradual replacement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species as<br />

salinity <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> inundati<strong>on</strong> decreases, mixed with local<br />

differences in overstorey <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> understorey based <strong>on</strong><br />

microhabitat variati<strong>on</strong> in tidal influence <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> input<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sediment from adjoining lithologies. The vegetati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> coastal barrier s<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s was linked to topographic<br />

positi<strong>on</strong>, depth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> water-table, fire frequency<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> degree <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> exposure to coastal <strong>on</strong>shore winds.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Vegetati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> lowl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s was influenced by geological<br />

parent material, soil fertility, aspect <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> influence<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> subsaline soils. The survey found that coarse-scale<br />

intuitive approaches used for mapping missed some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>the</strong> variati<strong>on</strong> delineated by floristic sampling.<br />

An assessment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> communities<br />

in <strong>the</strong> study area found that most poorly reserved<br />

communities were located <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> alluvial plain<br />

(16 communities), <strong>the</strong> estuarine plain (12), lower<br />

slopes <strong>on</strong> basalt <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sedimentary geology (11), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

coastal barrier s<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s (2). The reservati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> alluvial,<br />

estuarine plain <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> lowl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> vegetati<strong>on</strong> communities is<br />

particularly poor in <strong>the</strong> coastal lowl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Tweed,<br />

Brunswick <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Richm<strong>on</strong>d Rivers.<br />

Thirty seven (37) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> 62 vegetati<strong>on</strong> communities<br />

delineated have structural <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> floristic characteristics<br />

which relate to nine endangered ecological<br />

communities: Coastal saltmarsh; Freshwater wetl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s<br />

<strong>on</strong> coastal floodplains; Swamp sclerophyll forest <strong>on</strong><br />

coastal floodplains; Swamp Oak floodplain forest;<br />

Subtropical coastal floodplain forest; Lowl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

rainforest <strong>on</strong> floodplain; Themeda grassl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

seacliffs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> coastal headl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s; <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Littoral rainforest.<br />

The survey improved <strong>the</strong> knowledge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> floristic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

structural compositi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>mental influences<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>se endangered ecological communities.<br />

Nearly 300 records <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 50 significant taxa were made<br />

during <strong>the</strong> survey, including 39 threatened plants<br />

species, eleven ROTAP <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<strong>the</strong>r rare<br />

species <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> those at <strong>the</strong> limit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>ir distributi<strong>on</strong>:<br />

littoralis, Cassia brewsteri var. marksiana, Davids<strong>on</strong>ia<br />

jerseyana, Dendrobium melaleucaphilum, Dendrocnide<br />

morioides, Diospyros mabacea, Diospyros major var.<br />

ebenus, Diploglottis campbellii, Elaeocarpus sedentarius,<br />

Elaeocarpus williamsianus, Eleocharis tetraquetra,<br />

Endi<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ra muelleri subsp. bracteata, Geodorum<br />

densiflorum, Gossia fragrantissima, Grevillea hilliana,<br />

Marsdenia l<strong>on</strong>giloba,Ober<strong>on</strong>ia complanata, Ochrosia<br />

moorei, R<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ia moorei, Xylosma terrae-reginae.<br />

Vulnerable: Acacia bakeri, Archidendr<strong>on</strong> henders<strong>on</strong>ii,<br />

Bosistoa transversa, Corokia whiteana, Cryptocarya<br />

foetida, Desmodium acanthocladum, Endi<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ra floydii,<br />

Endi<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ra hayesii, F<strong>on</strong>tainea australis, Hicksbeachia<br />

pinnatifolia, Lepiderema pulchella, Lindsaea brachypoda,<br />

Macadamia tetraphylla, Ober<strong>on</strong>ia titani, Peristeranthus<br />

hillii, Persicaria elatior, Syzygium moorei, Tinospora<br />

tinosporoides. ROTAP: Acianthus amplexicaulis<br />

(2RC-), Acr<strong>on</strong>ychia baeuerlenii (3RC-), Archidendr<strong>on</strong><br />

muellerianum (3RCa), Argophyllum nullumense (3RCa),<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r significant species: Brun<strong>on</strong>iella spiciflora (rare in<br />

NSW), Dianella brevipedunculata (rare in NSW), Scleria<br />

levis rare in NSW, Sida cordifolia (rare in NSW).
