Kleskun Hills, near Grande Prairie<br />

Kleskun Hill Natural Area<br />

Who knew the badlands could be found as far north as<br />

the Peace Country? A short distance northeast of the<br />

city of Grande Prairie, Kleskun Hill rises 100 m (328 ft)<br />

above the surrounding prairie. The banded layers of<br />

rock in these “skeletonized” hills show a trip through<br />

time as far back as the age of the dinosaurs.<br />

Winagami/Kimiwan Lakes<br />

Close to the town of McLennan, self-proclaimed<br />

bird capital of Canada, these lakes are home to 200<br />

species of nesting and migratory shorebirds and<br />

waterfowl. Walk the boreal forest trail to the viewing<br />

platforms. In autumn, see bald eagles, American white<br />

pelicans, and trumpeter swans. Just 23 km (14 mi)<br />

northwest of Winagami, visit the Kimiwan Birdwalk<br />

and Interpretive Centre.<br />

Lakeland Provincial Park and Recreation Area<br />

East of Lac La Biche in the heart of our lake country,<br />

discover some of the finest lakes, beaches and<br />

shorelines. Home to <strong>Alberta</strong>’s only backcountry<br />

canoe circuit, put in at Mile 10 staging area and<br />

paddle Kinnaird, Jackson and Blackett lakes.<br />

Lots of campgrounds and<br />

access to hiking such as the<br />

Shaw Lake Trail, used by<br />

the early fur traders and<br />

First Nations people.
