1.0 INTRODUCTION<br />

In African setting particularly, the homogeneity <strong>of</strong> family issues are<br />

regarded as non-negotiable. Quite regularly, we <strong>of</strong>ten hear philosophical<br />

sayings like.<br />

It is God’s wish; no leaf will drop from a tree without God’s knowledge;<br />

and many similar things, just to ensure a win – win situation.<br />

You are expected to be familiar with these philosophical approaches in<br />

conflict resolution. By extension, you will have a good grasp <strong>of</strong> their<br />

possibilities when weighed against their strengths and weaknesses.<br />

2.0 OBJECTIVES<br />

After reading this unit, you should be able to:<br />

• explain the rationale behind involving philosophies in resolving<br />

conflict and<br />

• point out some vital conflicts that have been resolved through<br />

philosophies.<br />

3.0 MAIN CONTENT<br />

3.1 Concept <strong>of</strong> Philosophies in Conflict Resolution<br />

This has to do with intractable conflict, either at <strong>National</strong> or<br />

International levels, which conventional method <strong>of</strong> conflict resolution have left<br />

in limbo but which invocation <strong>of</strong> philosophies, such as putting the issue before<br />

the Supreme Being; only Him knows why; He knows best; let’s leave everything<br />

to God, and so forth, have assisted in either dousing by building peace within<br />

the combatants or have led to win-win situation.<br />

3.2 Conciliatory Approach <strong>of</strong> Philosophies in Conflict Resolution<br />

This is a situation in which a third party initiates processes that could<br />

culminate in bringing the parties in conflict together through various peacebuilding<br />

methods. The third party examines what is on ground, improves<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> communication and ensures through appropriate philosophies, that<br />
