These are:
1. Follow a precautionary approach when choosing
feedstocks
2. Work with stakeholders to build capacity
3. Comply with local, national and regional regulations
4. Develop and follow Environmental Management
Plans
5. Extend planning, monitoring and assessments beyond
the field.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels: The
Guidelines also describe the impacts of this yearlong
process on the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels
which now has a similar set of minimum requirements
and operating principles for avoiding the
risk of biological invasions during biofuel production
and processing. These are outlined in the published
document.
Acknowledgments
The interest and financial support of the David and
Lucile Packard Foundation was essential to this
process and is gratefully acknowledged. The IUCN
team of Sam Keam (our reliable and efficient consultant),
Nadine McCormick and Andrea Athanas
(of the IUCN Energy Group of the Business and
Biodiversity Programme) and the support from the
ESARO colleagues at the IUCN Wasaa Office in
Nairobi, including Esther Abonyo of the Invasive
Species Initiative, are thanked for their continuing
support and efforts to make this a year of useful outputs
and awakening in this corner of biodiversity
conservation. Similarly the participants at the two
workshops and the folks who responded to our call
for comment on the first draft of guidance are recognised
for their essential role in the process.
