There is in this defcription all the bloom of Milton's youthful
fancy. We may compare an evening fcene of the fame kind, Para-
dise Lost, ii. 488.
As, when from mountain tops the duflcy clouds
Afcending, while the north-wind fleeps, o'erfpread
Heaven's chearful face, the lowering element
Scowls o'er the darken'd landfcape fnow or fhower ;
If chance the radiant fun with farewell fweet
Extend his evening beam, the fields revive,
The birds their notes renew, and bleating herds

Flaw is a fea term for a fudden ftorm, or guft of wind.
In the Paradise Lost, among the changes produced in the na-
tural world are violent ftorms, which are defcribed
arm'd with ice,
And fnow and hail, and stormy gust and flaw;
x. 697.
where Bp. Newton cites two verfes from Shakfpeare's Venus and
Adonis ;
Like a red morn that ever yet betoken'd
Gust, and foul flaws to herdfmen and to herds.
