WEAVING OUR PAST INTO A POWERFUL FUTURE SPRING 2007
E M B R A C E T H E
S P I R I T O F S P E L L M A N

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,
For many, springtime brings glimpses of hope, joy, and new beginnings. While
our temperamental New England winter was not particularly icy or cold, we
nevertheless emerge from a monochrome world—where nature’s grayscales
slowly burst into color. Forsythia’s gold, crocus’ purple, tulips’ pink, and fields
of green make their presence known. So it is with us. In what ways will we
make ourselves known this season? What impressions will we stir in the world
around us, and how will we make a difference?
In this issue, we have a feature on our gifted Mock Trial team. These intelligent, debate-savvy students must
think quickly on their feet and assertively make their voices heard. In our recent production of Godspell, our
talented cast modeled the life and lessons of Jesus’ teaching, as He gently made His voice known. What will
be your message this season to those around you? How will you make your voice heard?
We are pleased to announce the addition of five talented new members of our Board of Trustees in this
issue. They join a group of dedicated professionals who are tasked with the challenge of overseeing the
acquisition of the school’s property. We, of course, continue our commitment to offer every student the
best Catholic college-preparatory education possible, and continually seek your prayers and support for
our success and vision.
In addition, after completing a vigorous regional search among Catholic and Independent School advancement
professionals throughout New England, Derek Collamati, formerly of St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket,
Rhode Island, began serving as our Director of Advancement on March 1, 2007. Derek brings a wealth of
experience and energy to this position and we are very pleased to welcome him to the Spellman Family.
Building upon the legacy of accomplishment achieved by Maryellen during her tenure, he will be a catalyst
for engaging our loyal alumni, parents, and friends more actively in the life of Cardinal Spellman High
School as we quickly approach our 50 th Anniversary during the 2008-2009 academic year. While he will have
plenty to keep him busy, Derek has the good fortune of joining a highly dedicated Advancement Team who
care passionately about the mission and future of Cardinal Spellman High School!
May you and your families be inspired by the blessings of springtime around you, and be encouraged to
embrace life’s changes and dreams as you make your own God-given talents known.
Please remember that you are always welcome to visit us at Spellman. We look forward to greeting our
alums as well as our Spellman parents and friends.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Cardinal Spellman High School, I am
pleased to announce the appointment of five new board members. These
new members, individually and collectively, significantly complement the
depth and breath of our current Board by providing extensive experience
and knowledge in the areas of academics, administration, athletics, business,
finance, law and public policy.
These additions come at an interesting and compelling point in Spellman’s
history. Soon our fine school will see a convergence of a number of significant
events: re-accreditation, our 50 th Anniversary, and the initiation of a master planning process, among other
things. Your Board will be communicating with you more about this convergence of opportunities very soon.
However, rest assured that the Board of Trustees is determined to assure the continued accomplishment of
Spellman’s Mission, by serving our community with 21 st century programs, resources and facilities.
Spellman Casts
A “Godspell”
Over Standing
Room Only
Audiences
After wowing audiences with Broadway-worthy performances in
Les Miserables last year, Cardinal Spellman’s Drama Department
had a tough road to follow—and the team sought to pave new
pathways with its production of “ Godspell”.
The play rose from book writer/lyricist John-Michael Tebelak,
who sought to author his master’s thesis project back in 1971, and
he fixed his sites on a musical presentation of the Gospel of St.
Matthew. Ideal for Easter season, the show depicts the teachings
of Jesus, backdropped by ‘60s-style flower children, spirited music, and a focus on community.
The performance opened with such philosophers as Socrates (Catherine Hawes), whose clear, powerful
voice reflected sentiments of a simpler time, while Aquinas’ (Charlotte Murray) staccato-delivery and
Luther’s (Joshua Potcner) mellow tenor complemented the delivery.
Nietschze’s (Stephen Fortin) deep voice complemented
Sartre’s (Katelyn Kazlauskas) clear commentary of
“I seem to be a verb…” as the black-clad philosophers
shortly closed the first scene. The scene changed to
“Tower of Babble”—where a cacophony of discontent
was evident as the actors crooned their own parts amid
a funky backdrop. Thomas Aleo, in the role of John the
Baptist, vocalized a peaceful tenor as he sang “Prepare
Ye the Way of the Lord” amid the tie-dyed frenzy of the
full-cast party atmosphere.
what’s happening on the hill
Paul Whelan, in the role of Jesus, offered a refreshing
image of peace and serenity in his white robe, as he
crooned “Save the People” and delivered messages of
inspiration, comfort, and hope to his avid listeners. His
pristine attire and calm voice resembled Henry Fonda’s
good-guy character in “Twelve Angry Men”, and the image was a stunning contrast among a costume
rainbow of tees, headbands, jeans, flower patches, peace signs and beads. He conveyed Jesus’ teaching about
those who keep God’s law having the highest place in the Kingdom of Heaven and cautioned those about fair
treatment of others. “He who abuses his brother must answer for it in the courts but he who sneers at this
brother will end up in the fires of hell,” noted Whelan of Jesus’ lessons. “If someone slaps you on the right
cheek, turn and offer him your left cheek,” he continued. “When you do an act of kindness, don’t let your
right hand know what your left hand is doing…your good deed must be done in secret.”
Maureen Azor, in the role of Robin, delivered a clear and convincing rendition of “Day By Day” in a face-to-
face stage prayer with Jesus. The lyrics continue to be a timeless plea of God’s guidance and companionship:
“Day by day, oh, dear Lord, these things I pray… to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee
more nearly… day by day.” The Samaritan scene offered some humor with the “beast” played for comedy by

a tired student, and Leeann Venuti’s rendition of “Learn Your
Lessons Well” (in the role of Gilmer) was a spunky reminder
for everyone in attendance to sit up and pay attention to the
timeless lessons of Biblical origin.
Barbara Pierre (in the role of Joanne), was fabulous, clad in lime
with a princess crown, as she crooned “O, Bless the Lord, My
Soul”. She moved like liquid silver, one motion melting into
the next, all the while sustaining a winning smile. “Light of the
World” featured glorious ensemble sound and great energy,
with larger-than-life dance steps. Like fitness-meets-theatre,
the energy of gym class and dance filled the auditorium in a sea
of turquoise, orange, neon swirls, and stripes. The strong male
voices and well-blended sopranos filled the auditorium with
lively praise alongside fabulous electric guitar accompaniment.
“All Good Gifts” (sung by Christopher Grant in the role of Lama) was performed with strength and intensity,
as he was encircled by avid listeners cast as the special ensemble. Sonia (Eilse Pierre-Louis) performed a
jazzy rendition of “Turn Back, O Man” in her sequins and boa, and drew the audience into her spell.
Throughout the performance, Whelan’s portrayal of Jesus was poised and graceful, even amid the top hat
fun and humor of the song “All For the Best”. Local-humor jokes about the rich man storing up Christo’s
pizza and Mrs.Gangell’s cookies in bins added to the Spellman flavor of the show, and drew many chuckles
from the audience. From the philosophical opening and the aisle-filled choral numbers to the scenes of
Jesus’ teaching and His heartbreaking crucifixion, Spellman’s “Godspell” stayed true to the heart of the show
with special touches of humor and charm. Truly a treat for the Easter season, the performance held themes
of community-building, Christ’s universal love, and the hope that renews each of us on life’s journey.
Clockwise from left:
Jesus, played by Paul Whelan ‘08,
proclaims: “Rejoice and be exceedingly
glad!”
and supporting cast show Lazarus no
As Joanne, Barbara Pierre ‘07, unlike
the “Good Samaritan,” pokes at the
meak and downtrodden.
Spellman’s Mock Trial Teaches Students
to Think on Their Feet and Take a Stand
Lightning-fast thinking and stellar debate tactics are the makings of a solid mock trial team and Spellman is a rising
star among statewide contenders for the championship title. Still in its relative infancy, the team was born just
five years ago, under the direction of History Department Chair, Alex Kuznezov. “The greatest challenge for our
students is to be able to hold their own and excel,” said Kuznezov. “It shows that our students are not only as smart
as the others they’re competing against, statewide, but are better able to perform and achieve academically.”
“The greatest
challenge for our
students is to be able
to hold their own
and excel... It shows
that our students are
not only as smart,...
but are better able
to perform and
achieve academically.”
“We meet the challenge of competing with
excellent students in the state and our record
speaks for itself,” said Kuznezov of Spellman’s
five-year win/loss record of 18/5. Its league
competition featured a 14/1 record, prior to
play-off trials.
Essentially, the Massachusetts Bar Association
sets up competitions and state-wide tournaments,
featuring cases assigned to the team for court
argument in front of actual judges. In the proposed
case, students receive a 150-page manual to study
and choose parts for witnesses and other key
players in the trial. According to Kuznezov, a key
case dealt with underage drinking by a high school
student at a college party. Each side was tasked
with convincing the other about the fault issues
associated with a DUI charge, but manslaughter
complicated the issues when a pedestrian was
killed by the drunk driver. In addition, the students
had to evaluate the legality of the administered
sobriety test. He explained that in the state playoffs, a flip of a coin decides whether your team is arguing
for the defense or the prosecution. According to Alex, “This type of spur-of-the-moment debating does
not work for the intense planner type of personality… you have a mere half hour to prepare your case after
receiving the news! You’re really thinking on your feet; it’s a great skill that can be applied in any class.”
Open to all students, about 50 students each school year compete for a much-coveted slot on the team.
Prospective team members are given a topic they have to debate. After one minute of uninterrupted prep
time, the coach “butts in and argues” the respective issue on the opposing side. “Then we (Kuznezov and
two other students) go three on one and try to back that candidate into a corner.”
“I feel that our youngsters are very prepared, legally and in their presentation. But, sometimes you do
everything right and it just doesn’t go your way,” commented Kuznezov of the legal and life lesson.

Above: Spellman’s Mock Trial team recently finished its fifth season with a record of 3-0, before bowing out
in the playoffs. Its 2007 team included Hannah Hazlett, Nicole Latini, Lauren Kreitman, Erin Flanagan,
Douglas Boyd, Bonie Rosario, Kevin Kourafas, Scott McNeil, Leigh Wilmot, Ashley McElveny, Gina
DiFederico, Paige Hanlon, and Mark Crespi.
Below: Hannah Hazlett ‘08 and Lauren Kreitman ‘08 preparing their statement.
The faculty advisor reported that it’s exciting
“being on the sidelines and watching your future
grow.” The challenge as faculty advisor is “to
watch them mature and grow,” said Kuznezov.
“Many serve on the team three or four years;
some are shy and meek in the beginning and
then become leaders in the community,” he
added. “Their confidence in speaking grows.”
For example, there is Guy Edouard ’05 who
is currently at Harvard. “It was great to
watch him grow from a shy teenager to
a confident young man.” “Our witnesses
are excellent,” said Kuznezov; “they know
everything about their affidavit, even where a
comma is,” he added. One judge commended
a former member for being such a credible
witness and praised his Hollywood-worthy
acting performance in the respective trial role.
Karen Butler ’82 Helps Build Confidence
by Launching Outdoor Adventures
Karen and Tom accepting the “Heroes Among
Us” Award during a Boston Celtics vs. Detroit
Pistons game for their dedicated service and
work with the disabled community.
Beauty and vision were the gems of adversity for Spellman
alumna Karen Butler ’82, who co-founded Butlee’s
Handicap Outdoor Adventures in 2001 with her husband,
Tom Lee. “It was our dream to be able to make adventures
available to the disabled who would otherwise have no
access to enjoy them,” stated Butler on the couple’s web
site. “Too often the people with disabilities can only get to
enjoy the great outdoors from the indoors…our mission
is to change that!”
The idea for the venture bloomed from Karen’s multiple
sclerosis, which she was diagnosed only a few months after
high school graduation. According to Butler, she became
wheel-chair bound in 1997. While Tom enjoys outdoor
activities such as hunting, camping, fishing, and Nascar
races, his experience in the EMS field, and wheelchair car
driver brought him in contact with many home-bound
people who could only dream of experiencing such
activities. In addition to wanting to share these adventures with his wife, he was touched by the needs of
those patients whose disabilities prevented them from participating in many outdoor excursions.
“He said, ‘we gotta get them out Karen’—that’s how the idea came about for Butlee,” explained Karen. “He
adapted my wheelchair for fishing because I only have use of one arm,” explained Karen, who commented
that her husband’s efforts grew to accommodate many disabled men and women on their racing and
fishing jaunts, which even included rock-climbing. The team is cognizant of the uphill battle faced by
those living with disabilities, among which is mobility—to walk, drive, or maneuver a wheelchair. “My
favorite part is when people say ‘what do you mean you go rock climbing?’ and then they say ‘if she can do
that, I can do that’,” noted Karen. She tells any doubters that if they feel they cannot do the climbing they
can still rappel and be part of the adventure.
The Butler team positions Butlee to focus on “abilities, not disabilities” and assists people in realizing
their dreams. Karen explained that the couple just recently decided to downsize their efforts a bit, due to
troubles with managing the project. “We’ll still be doing it, but in a smaller way,” explained Butler, “just
not 10 people camping… it’s too much for me.”
“I worked for Options for ten years as a skills trainer for the disabled, helping people manage their personal
care attendant program,” explained Karen. She and her husband will continue to take two or three guests
at a time on their fishing derby trips and racing excursion because, according to Karen, there’s nothing
better than hearing “Wow, I did it”.
Becky Thomas
alumni news
To Be Honored at Spellman’s Legacy Gala Auction
Wife of Dr. E. Michael Thomas, Jr. and proud mother of Bridget ‘00,
Brendan ’01, and Brady ’07, Becky is a perpetual Spellman volunteer. She
credits her experience as a veteran volunteer from St. Bridget’s Elementary School in
Abington for drawing her into the same role at Spellman. In the spring of 1996 (the
year prior to Bridget entering her freshman year), Becky was persuaded to take over a
Spellman intramural basketball program. Anyone that wanted to play was welcome and
there were six teams involved. Every Wednesday evening they would come to the gym
to have fun playing against their friends. Becky admired the devotion and effort these
friends showed for each other and she was most impressed by the respect they gave her.
It was three hours of fun and stats every Wednesday! What a great way to begin her
Spellman career.
In September of 1996 the real fun started when Bridget entered ninth grade, and Becky
swiftly became a permanent fixture as a volunteer in the Advancement Office. She
worked the calendar drive, the ad drive for the musical and assisted in countless other Advancement-related
projects. Always eager to give assistance wherever and whenever needed, Becky also helped Roseanne in the
school kitchen for many school-related events.
One of Becky’s favorite volunteer spots was the Nurse’s office where she volunteered one day a week. She
particularly loved interacting directly with the students and got to know many of them quite well . These young
Robert (Bob) and Emily Dillis
people amazed her with their diverse personalities. The one commonality she noted
was their respect for their peers and the adults around them.
Over the years, Becky has co-chaired the Parent Connection, organized and helped
staff the concession stands at the athletic contests, chaired an auction and a fashion
show, organized fundraisers and assisted with the Admissions Office projects. Every
September found Becky “manning” the grills for the freshman welcome cook-out.
Only once during the past years did they really have to coax her to volunteer – as
a speaker before a full house in the auditorium! But through it all, she wouldn’t
change a thing. “I could never have accomplished most of what I have done without
the support of my wonderful family and many good people,” noted Becky, “but
more important are the many wonderful friendships I have forged throughout the
years volunteering with others in the Spellman community.”
“All because two people fell in love” is the signature phrase of the Dillis
legacy. Both Robert and Emily were born in Boston in 1930 as children of
Lithuanian immigrants. Hardships of growing up during the Depression prepared them well for the future and
for raising their own large family of 16 children. Bob’s father died when he was four and because his mother had
to work, he was allowed to start school a year earlier than usual. Emily’s mother died when she was fourteen. She
became a surrogate mother to her younger sister and housekeeper for her father and two older brothers. This
responsibility later kept her from her life’s ambition of going to nursing school and becoming a nurse. However,
in retrospect, raising their large family would certainly qualify her as an experienced Pediatric Nurse.
Their predestined paths crossed at South Boston High School, where they met in French class and became
“high school sweethearts”. They recently celebrated a very special occasion, the sixtieth anniversary of their first
date. They were married in 1952 while Bob was serving in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After his
honorable discharge from active duty, Bob found work in the infant computer industry as a wireman. Additional
education and training would be necessary so Bob enrolled at Northeastern University. Ten years of night school
earned him an Associate Degree in Engineering, a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and a Master’s in
Business Administration. He was inducted into Northeastern University’s honor fraternity, Sigma Epsilon Rho.
Along with his college work and job experience, Bob held a number of significant positions in manufacturing
and engineering, and was ultimately promoted to Senior Principal Engineer. To supplement the family income,
Bob held a second job at Jordan Marsh (later Macy’s) and Emily worked for a time as the “dessert lady” in
Spellman’s cafeteria.
Both have done volunteer work at St. Casimir, their home parish, at Spellman, and for the Sisters of Jesus Crucified.
Emily is a past Prefect of the Ladies Sodality; Bob is a past President of the Holy Name
Society and is the secretary of the parish Saint Vincent DePaul Society. Bob continues as
a lector at the Lithuanian Masses. all 16 of their children graduated from Spellman,
and their legacy continues now that one grandson is enrolled at Spellman.
Peter Ambrose
alumni news
To Be Honored at Spellman’s Legacy Gala Auction
In 1959, Peter J. Ambrose arrived at a one year-old school high on a hill among
the trees of the East side of Brockton—that school was Cardinal Spellman
High School. A recent college graduate of St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Peter
began his career when then Principal, Sister Vera, CSJ hired him as a teacher and a coach. He
was the first lay person on the faculty of Spellman. As a young teacher-coach he dreamed of
having athletic fields for the Spellman campus and shared these dreams with Father Jim Coyle,
Spellman’s chaplain. Together they garnered the support of administration and the community
to construct Potvin Field, the site of Spellman’s first home football game in 1968. This would
not have been possible without the blessing of the Principal, Sister Claire Browne, CSJ, along
with the determined efforts of the late Ed Amaral ’62 and a host of others, Pete proved not only
to be a man of vision but also one of commitment and dedication. He knew the importance of
a home field to school spirit. This field is now the site for soccer and softball games as well as football.
Other improvements came at a steady rate. An access road appeared one Saturday afternoon; a flag pole was
raised; a score board lit up an October night; a well was drilled for irrigation. Perhaps the most significant
transformation took place in the 1990s. After three years of felling trees and hauling “fill” plus many hours of
landscaping, a new baseball/soccer field became a reality. This field, the Peter J. Ambrose Field, was dedicated
on May 28, 1994.
The late robert F. kennedy said during his 1968 presidential campaign...
“ There are those who look at things the way
they are, and ask, why. I dream of things
that never were, and ask why not?”
~Peter J. ambrose is the embodiment of this quote. he is a Spellman legacy.
Peter Ambrose has accomplished much during his 48-year tenure at CSHS. He has been a teacher, coach,
department head, athletic director and dean of students at the school. He received his Master’s Degree in 1967
and has accumulated many more post graduate credits. He is a member of four Halls of Fame, including the
Cardinal Spellman Athletic Hall of Fame (’85), Massachusetts Baseball Coaches (’86), Massachusetts High School
Football Coaches (’96), and St. Francis Xavier University Hall of Fame (’04). He was the Brockton Enterprise
Man of the Year (‘82), and was featured on NBC in June of ’04. His teams have won numerous championships.
All of this complements his role as a loving son, brother, husband, and father of five wonderful children.
The milestones keep on coming. He recorded his 800 th coaching victory in baseball and football, and is on target
to become the third high school baseball coach in Massachusetts history to win 600 baseball games. For Pete
Ambrose, coaching was more than winning and losing. He states: “It’s the kids, I remember, not the scores. Kids
like Peter Doody, Earl Strong, John Kearney, Brian Feeney, Bucky Butkevich and Dennis Doble”. He has maintained
close relationships with many former players such as Clint Allen (‘62) and Mike Molinario (’69). In addition, Peter
has coached many father/son athletes. The names roll off his tongue: “the Nickleys, the Kellys, the Creedons, the
Hinkleys…”. This spring he will be coaching two of his grandsons, Matthew Briggs and Eric Beltran.
Dear Classmates: I am really sorry that I wasn’t able
to write a short hello for the last “Tradition”. I am
in the middle of getting ready to retire and selling
my house and moving. The week I was to write the
“Tradition Notes” I thought I had sold my house and
I was moving that Saturday so I was packing fast.
Then it wasn’t sold. Now as far as news is concerned:
debbie is commuting back and forth to Nantucket
every day for the bank. elaine is in Florida this week
3/15 with her husband on vacation. Lorraine and
I are going to mary mcCarron’s to help her win an
election to Duxbury’s Town Clerk position. So that
is the YaYa’s. rosie hebshie rappold has a new
grandchild. We had dinner at “Brennan’s” which is
the old Pickle Barrel from the 1980s. Food is very
good by the way and on Sunday night they have
Irish Music played by a large group just having fun
with it. I saw Jeannie moynihan at the store and
she says she sees the St. Pat’s girls often. They work
together at the Brockton School Department Office.
Jeannie still works for McMenamy’s too. When we
see each other it is like old times, I guess I just miss
you all. I got an email from kevan Sullivan who is
in Florida at the moment. He and John Ladouceur
and their wives are not too far from each other in
Florida. John and Reggie say Hello to All. rita and
david maynard are also in Florida for the winter.
I saw them at Christmas at church. We go to the
old St. Colman’s (merged with Sacred Heart) which
is now Christ the King Parish. For those of you
who are away for the winter, Sacred Heart School
is closing and there will be two Catholic schools
– one at St. Edward’s which will house K-3 and
the other at St. Colman’s school which will reopen
and be refurbished for a middle Catholic school. I
got a letter from Sheila kiley Leary. She sent me
a lovely letter and it was most appreciated. She
says she lives in Bourne and sees kathy mcGrory
Pratt often. Kathy has a store in South Weymouth
called “That Little Basket”. If anyone is in the South
Weymouth neighborhood, do go see Kathy. The
Randolph people should try to get together this
time. I understand not too many of you see each
other. If there is interest we will work around you.
The Stoughton people can be found and would
like to see each other as well. Claire deloughrey,
Where are you? Email me. John and Lyn (Barron)
holmgren are living in Falmouth. If anyone needs
cabinets, this is what John does (and I might add,
very well). Charlotte Beary has been seen about
town in West Bridgewater and is eager to see us
all at a reunion. Okay, now on the subject of our
Reunion – 2007: is our 45th Reunion. I had a few
thoughts, but not too many people have replied to
the idea of a cruise on Boston Harbor (dress down
in sneakers, jeans, and sweatshirt). However, I
have heard from kathy mara Cipriano and Jake
Creedon as well as Bucky and I told them I would
call a meeting to get things started at George’s Cafe
in Brockton on a Thursday night, the first week in
April, I think it is the 5th of April. Thursday night
alumni news
Class Notes
seems to be a good night for all and 7 o’clock is the
suggested time. I don’t work on Thursday nights
and there are not too many meetings on Thursday
nights so perhaps we can get together then. Many
like the idea of a Saturday night dinner. Not too
expensive… When is the question? If you have
We want to start with a big thank you to ralph
tedeschi for “doing the class of ‘64 proud” by
chairing the annual alumni drive – lots of hard
work there. And, we want to send our thoughts
and condolences to the family and friends of Jane
Buckley madden on her recent passing.
For this issue we caught up with Choyce Cassidy
and Sharyn Gallaway as they re-connected in
Fort Lauderdale recently. Sharyn and Choyce
discovered they had a Lauderdale connection at
our 40th Reunion. Sharyn has visited family there
for most of her life and Choyce has lived there for
the past 6 years. They both consider themselves
“health nuts” and enjoy getting together and
mindstorming. Choyce has a degree in Physical
Education from Stonehill and Sharyn has degrees
in Dental Hygiene and Health Science from
Northeastern. Choyce has been involved with
the holistic approach and alternative medicine for
years, practicing therapeutic massage and teaching
yoga to keep herself and others healthy in both
body and mind. Sharyn has a home-based business
selling natural skin care products and, after turning
the big 60 as we all are, is now reaching a major
goal – participating in the Rock ‘N Roll Marathon
(walking) in San Diego, CA on June 3, 2007. She
has been in training and fundraising for the
Leukemia Lymphoma Society in anticipation of this
inspiring accomplishment. Kudos to Sharyn. They
also discovered that Choyce was a tennis coach at
UC Santa Barbara and Sharyn’s daughter, Jamie,
graduated from the same school in 2004. More
coincidence: Jamie will be graduating from Suffolk
Law School in May and lives in the North End of
Boston – just down the street from donna denly
Piscatelli. Looks like more re-connecting will
happen in Boston in May. Sharyn has been married
to her husband Jim for 28 years and his career
has taken them to PA, CA and now Phoenix, AZ
– but her heart and now her soon-to-be-a-successfulattorney
daughter keep her mind on the East Coast.
You can e-mail Sharyn at slg6419@aol.com for some
re-connecting of your own.
We’d really love to hear from more of you out there
– any other connections and/or re-connections?
Let’s all “Spring Ahead” and enjoy our 60s in 2007.
tom o’donnell recently contacted the Alumni
office with this update. “I was recently contacted
re: my whereabouts and goings on since graduating
from Spellman in 1969. In brief, I moved to San
Diego, CA. shortly after the “great blizzard” of ’78.
I have three children: Nicholas who graduates from
UCSD this spring, Caitlin who is a sophomore at
19

20
UC Berkeley and Adam who is a junior at Cathedral
Catholic High School. I am currently the operations
manager of Florexpo, LLC. - the largest distributor
of cut flowers on the west coast. We have bouquet
manufacturing and distribution facilities in
Carlsbad, CA., Monterey Bay, CA. and Portland,
OR. The product we distribute in the US is grown
on over 50 farms located throughout Colombia.
We own and operate these farms and employ more
than 11,000 local residents. Although I don’t visit
the Boston area very often, I was able to compete in
the Boston Marathon in 1990. Other than church,
family and work obligations, sports have consumed
most of my waking hours. I was fortunate enough
to throw the ceremonial first pitch at Jack Murphy
Stadium prior to a game between the Padres and
Expos in 1995. I met Bill Russell at the NCAA
Basketball Championship game between Florida
and UCLA last year.
Last August, I chaperoned my youngest son Adam
and his teammates on an international soccer
tournament in England. Adam’s high school soccer
team played in the league championship game on
3/3/07 but unfortunately lost 1-0. In any event, I
have been blessed in every way since my shy and
awkward teenage years at Cardinal Spellman High
School. However, upon reflection, these were some
of the happiest times of my life. I can only hope and
pray that my fellow classmates and their families have
been as fortunate and as blessed since we graduated
just a few years ago! God bless.” From your classmate,
Tom –We were very impressed when we heard that
Tom O’Donnell’s son plays “international “ soccer.
We’ll follow his successes. We wish him luck in
his career. debra Beary ain has retired from
her nursing duties in the United States Air Force.
She is now teaching and sharing her expertise at a
community college in Nevada. We think Vegas is a
great place to hold our next reunion. Jane Condon
is just about booked solid as she continues to
showcase her comedy routine at clubs and events in
the Greenwich/ New York City areas. We have seen
her “hilarious act “ up close and personal and believe
you me, her show is one that shouldn’t be missed! If
you want to see her perform or better yet, book her
to perform at your next gathering, you can check out
her schedule at myspace.com/JaneCondon. Perhaps
if we hold our next reunion at Debra Beary’s and
we hire Jane as a Las Vegas headliner, we can have
the “all time best party ever”. Food for thought…
Speaking of locations to hold our next party, Paula
macdonald Baker has retired after 21 years of
teaching and will be purchasing a home on Marco
Island. Beach, tennis, and a few cocktails....I think
that sounds like a plan. Or, maryJo mcmahon
Curtis ,who has moved to Holyoke, is continuing to
renovate a huge old Victorian with lots of room. She
states that if you help her decorate, she’ll provide the
party space!
We had lots of responses from our last “Tradition
“ update. None was more funny than the feedback
we got from John Goff. Apparently, we had some
“mis”information regarding a Championship title won
by the Nauset Regional High School Hockey team in
alumni news
Class Notes
2004. Seems we gave credit to marybeth o’heir’s
husband Travis Chandler for the job well done. Travis
is a talented musician (whom we also could book for
our next big gala) and founder of the Travis Chandler
Philharmonic Orchestra and club WOW and our own
dear John was the winning coach! John, if you checked
our past writings, we emphatically stated that if we
did not hear from our classmates, we would make up
stuff about them. We just began with you!! And it just
took a few penned words to hear from John after 38
years. We are proud to hear that John and his wife
Brenda are living the good life on old Cape Cod in
the town of Orleans. John and his son are partners in
Goff Brothers Construction Co. and John’s daughter,
Jacquelin, was married in March. John shared much
more info with us, but we are going to save some
for our next Tradition article. Happy to report that
marybeth oheir Chandler and Jane Condon were
able to reconnect with each other after many years.
All made possible through this outlet. We spoke with
martha mathison, who is well. Check out her website
www.leftbankgallery.com. Caroline Chicarelli was
really excited when talking about her role in expanding
technology in the classroom. She sounds great! And
now working for the pharmaceutical firm Galxo.
Donna is hoping for a reunion or gathering
As the animal edged closer to the shore, the tide began
its backward descent. In an instant the lightening
struck, the sky opened up and a cacophony of bangs
filled the air. The man on the seawall began to tremble
with fear, it had been over 30 years since he had
experienced anything like this. In his heart he knew
what was happening, even if his mind tried to push the
thoughts away. On the other side of town, a woman sat
crouched within a dark hole with her young daughter
by her side. They had been hiding for 2 days. The fear
in the air was palpable on the outside of the hole and
the woman wanted nothing to do with it. She held the
bottle of water to her daughters lips. At that moment,
a roar from above began to ................ Soooooooooo,
since I must fill up our Class Notes with something,
I have decided to begin a novel and will consider it my
first published piece! This is published, right? ~Just
think of the possibilities! I can use our Class Notes to
write this fiction, chapter by chapter, even if it takes
5 years to complete . . . Unless of course some of
you would like to send updates on what is going on in
your lives. Honestly, it makes much more sense to fill
this space with information about all of you. However,
I can’t get blood from a stone and I can’t write about
things I don’t know. Please, do us all a favor and drop
me a quick email to share the non-fiction of your life.
You can share the good stuff and none of the bad, if you
don’t want to..... what do you have to lose? I assure you,
I will put my story on hold and look for an independent
publisher if I begin to hear from some of you. Take
care...and please, write. Warmest regards, Lisa
Other people are just accepting the birthday with grace
Cpl. Jonathan Wood recently received the Purple
Heart. Last October, he was wounded by an
improvised explosive device while riding in a light
armored vehicle along the banks of the Euphrates
River in Iraq. Although injured, he helped carry the
injured to a helicopter. Our thoughts and prayers
are with all our military protecting our country.
Contributed by Matthew Albanese, Esq. ‘90
Following his political science studies at Providence College, Matthew
Albanese went on to Suffolk University School of Law, where he graduated
in 1999. While working as a legislative aide, he obtained a Master’s Degree
in Business Administration from Suffolk University’s Sawyer School of
Management. He has also worked as legal counsel for the Massachusetts
House of Representatives’ Committee on Medicaid and currently specializes
in estate planning and elder law with Colucci, Colucci, Marcus & Flavin,
P.C. out of Milton, MA.
Mr. Albanese has volunteered his services in support of the Spellman
Community and will subsequently be a regular in this magazine,
addressing various avenues regarding charitable giving. In his series,
he will touch upon everything from charitable remainder trusts to
establishing a gift annuity. The purpose of this piece is strictly informative, providing the Cardinal Spellman
Community with quick facts while opening our eyes to the opportunities that planned giving presents
to us. However, should you wish to learn more, Matthew is willing to “meet with anyone free of charge,
particularly if it helps Spellman.”
We offer our sincere thanks to Matthew for offering his services!
Dan Burke ’82, a RE/MAX realtor,
has generously offered to give five
percent of his commission from
every sale by a Spellman graduate
or family member to the school’s
