Stewart<br />
Karma - 7 year old spayed<br />
female Pit. Karma is house<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> wonderful with<br />
children <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r dogs!<br />
Dear Stewart,<br />
I decided to buy a live Christmas<br />
tree this year. How am I<br />
supposed to care for it?<br />
Dear Mr. Reese,<br />
T. Reese<br />
Congratulations on decid<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
go live this year. This tree will be<br />
<strong>the</strong>re to enjoy year after year <strong>and</strong><br />
you might see me or one of my<br />
friends liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> it some day.<br />
Yes, <strong>the</strong>re is special care <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
<strong>in</strong> live trees, but it is not<br />
all that difficult. The most important<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g is to gradually <strong>in</strong>troduce<br />
it to <strong>the</strong> warmer conditions<br />
of <strong>the</strong> house. Start three or four<br />

real sweetie-pie <strong>and</strong> good<br />
with o<strong>the</strong>r dogs.<br />

days before <strong>and</strong> put it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cool<br />
garage or an enclosed porch.<br />
Remember this tree is dormant<br />
<strong>and</strong> immediate heat will start it<br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>. Before it gets <strong>in</strong>side<br />
<strong>the</strong> house you’ll also want to<br />
check it for bugs <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r critters.<br />
Some people like to spray<br />
on an antidessicant like Wiltpruf<br />
to help <strong>the</strong> needles conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
moisture before <strong>the</strong>y br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
tree <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> house.<br />
When it’s ready to come <strong>in</strong>side,<br />
place it <strong>in</strong>side a large galvanized<br />
tub to help stabilize it <strong>and</strong> help<br />
collect any fallen needles or debris.<br />
Try to locate <strong>the</strong> tree <strong>in</strong> a<br />
cool part of <strong>the</strong> room <strong>and</strong> def<strong>in</strong>itely<br />
away from heat sources.<br />
Keep <strong>the</strong> root ball watered as<br />
often as necessary but try not to<br />
Humane Society of <strong>Warren</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
get it too soggy by over water<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Try not to leave <strong>the</strong> tree <strong>in</strong>side<br />
any <strong>more</strong> than 4 to 7 days <strong>and</strong><br />
never add nutrients or fertilizers<br />
while <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> house. For re<strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> tree to <strong>the</strong> outdoors,<br />
just reverse <strong>the</strong> procedure<br />
of br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong>side so that it can<br />
slowly adapt to <strong>the</strong> colder temperatures<br />
outside. Once ready,<br />
<strong>the</strong> tree can be planted just like<br />
any o<strong>the</strong>r tree. Of course, you<br />
had planned ahead <strong>and</strong> already<br />
dug <strong>and</strong> prepared <strong>the</strong> hole so this<br />
part should be easy.<br />
I hope you enjoy your live Christmas<br />
tree for many years!<br />
