The Holy Child~Santo Niño Assn. is conducting Home to

get-together of like minded young people and everyone
between 18 and 30 are invited to come. Yes, we do pray and are
guided by the Magisterium but this is not a prayer group. Check

The True Historical Columbus
Ask the average American,
who was Christopher
Columbus? Answers vary
from "explorer" to
"adventurer' to
"discoverer." While he was
all of the above, the most
important part of his life is
seldom mentioned: His faith
in Jesus Christ and devotion
to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
On the reasons for his voyage, Columbus wrote,
"Our Redeemer Jesus Christ said that before the end
of the world, all things must come to pass ... some of
the prophecies remain yet to be fulfilled ... The fact
that the gospel must still be preached to so many
lands such a short time, this is what convinces me."
He named his flagship "La Santa Maria” - the
Holy Mary. On August 3, 1942, every crew member
gave his last confession and received Holy Communion.
According to Bartolome de las Casas:
[Columbus] received the very Holy Sacrament of the
Eucharist on the very day he entered upon the sea; and
in the name of Jesus ordered the sails to be set.
A young sailor would announce each day "Blessed
be the light of day, and the holy cross, we say: and the
Lord of Veritie. And the Holy Trinity." Then the sailors
would recite the Pater Noster and the Ave Maria.
Columbus named the first island they landed on
San Salvador, meaning Holy Savior. He knelt and
prayed: "O Lord, Almighty and everlasting God, by
Thy holy Word Thou hast created the heavens, and the
earth, and the sea: blessed and glorified be Thy
Name, and praised be Thy majesty, which deigned to
use us, Thy humble servants, that Thy holy name may
be proclaimed in this second part of earth."
On May 20, 1506, Christopher Columbus uttered as
his last words the last words of Christ: "into your
hands, Father, I commend my soul"

Sisters Going-away Party
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny are a
international religious order and the ten
sisters who arrived in Wilmington, California,
in 1951 were Irish except for Sr.
Monica Grant, who was born in Fiji of
Brahmin Indian parents. They settled
into their new mission quickly continuing and expanding
the elementary education program begun in Sts. Peter
and Paul Parish in 1944 by the Franciscan Sisters of
Charity and Penance. The school building on Bayview
Avenue and convent on the corner of Lagoon and Opp
were both brand new. The people made the sisters very
welcome and so began fifty-eight years of loving mutual
service.
It was with great sadness that the last Cluny Sister,
Sr. Genevieve, left the school in 2003. Sts. Peter and
Paul, Wilmington, will always have a special place in
the hearts of the fifty or more Cluny Sisters who have
served the school and parish.
Everyone is invited to attend a “going away/
farewell reception” for our very own Sisters of
St. Joseph of Cluny on Saturday, Oct. 17, in
the parish hall after the 5:00 pm Holy Mass.
The Mass will be celebrated in Thanksgiving for
the grace and blessings received by the Sisters
and parishioners during the 58 years the Cluny
Sisters lived with us. This event is co-hosted by
the various parish organizations and we expect
a large turn-out to wish our Sisters well.

La Verdadera Historia de
Cristobal Colón
¿Si se le preguntara a
cualquier persona: Quién
fue Cristobal Colón? Las
respuestas varian de
“explorador”,”aventurero”
a “descubridor.” Pero aunque
el fue todas esas cosas
la más importante parte de
su vida casi nunca es mencionada:
Su fe en Jesucristo
y su devoción a la
Virgen María.
Acerca de la razón de su viaje, Colón escribió,
“Nuestro Redentor Jesucristo dijo que antes del fin
del mundo, todas las cosas tienen que pasar…
algunas de las profecías no han sido completadas…
La que me convenció a mi es la que dice que el evangelio
debe ser proclamado en todas las naciones.”
Colón nombró a su barco “La Santa María.” El
3 de agosto de 1942, cada uno de sus marinos recibió
confesión y comunión. Según Bartolomeo de las
Casas: “Colón recibió el sacramento de la santa
comunión en el día que partió y en el nombre de Jesus
ordenó la partida de las naves.
Al amanecer un joven marino anunciaba “Bendita
sea la luz y bendita sea la santa cruz y el Señor de
la Verdad, y la Santa Trinidad.” Despues los marinos
recitaban el Padre Nuestro y el Ave María.
Colón nombro la primera isla a la que llegaron
San Salvador. Se hincó y rezó: “O Señor Todopoderoso
y Eterno, con vuestra Santa Palabra has
creado el cielo, la tierra y el mar: bendito y glorificado
sea vuestro Santo nombre, y venerada sea
vuestra grandeza, que nos escogió a nosotros,
vuestros humildes siervos, para que vuestro Santo
nombre sea proclamado en esta segunda parte de la
tierra.”
El 20 de mayo de 1506, Cristobal Colón pronunció
sus últimas palabras usando las últimas palabras de
Cristo:“En tus manos, Padre, encomiendo mi alma.”

Despedida de Las Hermanas
Las Hermanas de San Jose de Cluny son una
orden religiosa internacional y las diez hermanas
que llegaron a Wilmington, California,
en 1951 son de descendencia irlandés
excepto la Hermana Monica Grant, quien
nació en Fiji de padres indígenas en Brahmin.
Ellas se establecieron en su misión rápidamente
continuando y ampliando el programa de educación de
primaria empezada en la Parroquia San Pedro y San
Pablo en 1944 por las Hermanas Franciscanas de la
Caridad y Penitencia. El edificio de la escuela sobre la
Bay View y el convento en la esquina de Lagoon y Opp,
ambos eran nuevos. La gente hizo sentir a las hermanas
bienvenidas y así empezaron cincuenta y ocho años de
servicio amoroso.
Con gran tristeza la última Hermana Cluny, la Hermana
Genevieve, dejó la escuela en el 2003. La Iglesia
San Padro y San Pablo, siempre tendrá un lugar especial
en nuestros corazones para las cincuenta o más
hermanas Cluny que han servido la escuela y parroquia.
Todos están invitados a venir a la fiesta de
despedida de nuestras Hermanas de San
José de Cluny este sábado 17 de Octubre en
el salón parroquial después de la Santa
Misa de 5:00 pm. La Misa será ofrecida en
Acción de Gracias por las gracias y bendiciones
adquiridas por las Hermanas y feligreses
durante los 58 años que estuvieron con nosotros.
Este evento es organizado por varios grupos
parroquiales y esperamos un gran acontecimiento
para desearles a las Hermanas lo

Our Lady of
Guadalupe
Mark your calendars! Our Dear Mother
will be visiting us. The Guadalupe Torch
(Antorcha Guadalupana) with the Holy
Flame from the Basilica of Our Lady of
Guadalupe in Mexico City, along with
the pilgrim images of Our Lady of Guadalupe
and St. Juan Diego, will be arriving
in our parish, SS. Peter and Paul on
Sunday, November 15 th and will leave
on Friday, November 20 th .
The 2009 Guadalupe Committee of the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles sent a delegation
of Catholic faithful to Mexico
City to receive the Holy Flame from the
Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The Torch along with the pilgrim images of Our Lady of
Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, will be taken to select parishes
throughout the Archdiocese as part of a three-month
celebration commemorating the 10th anniversary of the
proclamation of the Virgin of Guadalupe as the Patron Saint
of the Americas by Pope John Paul II.
“Ten year’s ago, the Holy Father Pope John Paul II,
blessed our Church in the Americas by naming Our Lady of
Guadalupe as our Patroness,” said Monsignor John Moretta,
Pastor of Resurrection Church and Chair of the 2009
Guadalupe Committee. “The theme of this year’s celebration,
‘Do Not Be Afraid,’ is the very words Our Lady of
Guadalupe said to St. Juan Diego 478 years ago. Those
words continue to lift the hearts of our people in light of the
difficult times.”

The Missionaries of Fatima
The Missionaries of Fatima will hold their annual Mass/potluck
October 24, 2009. An 11:30 AM rosary will be followed by
the noon Mass at Nativity Catholic Church in Torrance, CA.
The potluck will be held in the hall immediately after Mass.

Nuestra Sra. de Guadalupe dichas a San Juan Diego hace
478 años. Esas palabras continúan alentando los corazones
de nuestra gente en medio de tiempos difíciles.”
