Social Studies Indicators
• 9.4 spi (USH) Recognize the impact of technological and cultural changes
in American society.
Language Arts Indicators
• 2.1.A tpi (EOC) participate in paired, shared, and choral readings using
one or more sources
• 2.1.A tpi (G) participate in paired, shared, and choral readings using one
or more sources
Materials needed:
Choral reading materials such as Judy Odom’s poem “Keeping the Music
Free”
Assessment activity: Choral Reading
1. Choose four students to participate in a shared choral reading.
2. Direct students to practice the chosen reading.
3. Direct students to perform the choral reading for an audience to
practice oral language.
4. Instruct students on possible participation strategies, such as having
members of the group facing backwards and turning to audience
when it is time to perform or standing back to back and addressing
audience when it is time to read.
Assessment tool: See attached sample assessment.
EXTENSIONS: Instruct students to find a passage of text and to write a poem in
two to four voices and perform it for the class.
