28 Purbeck Young Artists 2012 Purbeck Young Artists (PYA) is the childrens’ section of the Festival. Our aim is to promote and celebrate the creativity of children of all ages. Each year the PYA team encourage schools to explore a shared theme and explore new creative activities. Outside of school, the performers who are playing at the Festival lead more workshops to introduce young people to their techniques and share their experience. This year Stephen Warbeck, the Gabrieli Consort and several local artists are sharing their skills. The PYA theme this year is ‘Carnival of the Animals’ and children are creating artwork, music, drama and creative writing inspired by the music of Camille Saint-Saens. We are delighted that 5 professional artists have agreed to lead workshops in 12 of our local schools. Children aged 7 to 17 are able to develop their skills in painting, mask making, sculpture, music and story telling with the help of experienced professional artists. Outcomes from the workshops will be showcased at the PYA Celebration Event at Swanage Middle School, at the ‘Crown the Castle’ Parade and on exhibition at Rollington Barn. YouTuba’s ‘Carnival of The Animals’ tea party and concert offers an exciting opportunity to hear the music and see the children’s artwork together. For young film makers: Thursday 7th June, 7.30pm | Swanage Middle School Composer Stephen Warbeck won an Oscar for his score for Shakespeare in Love. Stephen will introduce his work and play compositions to film with his ensemble. £12 adults, £2 children. Daytime workshop 10am - 2pm for young film makers wishing to work with Stephen to create original music to their film or animation. WRITE STUFF! FREE TICKETS for young journalists aged 10-19. This year PYA are looking for young journalists to showcase their writing by reviewing the Festival events. The Festival is offering FREE tickets to any event (one adult/one child) in return for a children’s review of the event to encourage young people to practice their writing skills and meet deadlines. For a chance to win, children should simply email us 50 words explaining why they would like to attend their chosen event and we will send the best entries a set of free tickets. Children email their review (50 – 300 words) to the Festival within 24hours. A maximum of 3 free ticket sets will be available per event. Please email your request at least 5 days before your chosen event to: iamaPYA@yahoo.co.uk CALLING ALL RECORDER PLAYERS. Gabrieli Consort & Players are in town! Two recorder workshops and the chance for players to perform at the start of the Gabrieli Concert! Ian Pillow will lead a recorder workshop on Saturday 19th May at 9.30am, All Saints Church, Swanage. Rebecca Miles from the Gabrieli consort & players will rehearse 2nd June at 10.30am at St Mary’s Church, Swanage. Players from both will introduce the Gabrieli Concert at 7.30pm.
