Picture by Rowan Griffiths Gabrieli Consort & Players are world-renowned interpreters of great choral and instrumental repertoire from the renaissance to the present day. They are regular visitors to the world’s most prestigious concert halls and appear frequently at London’s major venues. They are committed to working with young musicians and in 2010 launched the Gabrieli Young Singers’ Scheme. Gabrieli record for Paul McCreesh’s new record label Winged Lion. Their highly acclaimed recording of Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts will be followed by three further releases during 2012: A Song of Farewell; A Venetian Coronation; and Mendelssohn’s Elijah. Mhairi Lawson Soprano has performed with such companies as English National Opera, Les Arts Florissants, the Gabrieli Consort & Players, the Academy of Ancient Music and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Commercial recordings include Haydn’s Creation and many of Vivaldi’s works with La Serenissima. Forthcoming CD releases include Schubert Lieder. Recent and future highlights include Galatea in Acis and Galatea, Iphis in Jephtha, and The Creation (Gabrieli Consort & Players/McCreesh); Dorinda in Orlando and Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade; recitals in the Belfast Festival and Brighton Early Music Festival; Bach Magnificat; Haydn’s The Seasons; Handel’s Ottone and Couperin’s Trois Leçons de ténèbres in a European tour (The King’s Consort). Paula Chateauneuf Lutenist is a soloist, accompanist, teacher and linchpin of numerous early music groups and has earned her reputation as one of the most respected and admired musicians in early music. She has been involved in pioneering work with the groups Circa 1500, Sinfonye, the New London Consort, and the Gabrieli Consort & Players, whose principal lutenist she remains to this day. Her playing has been described as one of the most exciting things on the pre-classical concert circuit; her interest in improvisation, dance music, and basso continuo has led to a diverse career. She is a sought after accompanist for leading singers and international opera houses and has
ecorded for all the major labels. Biographies Martin Best Singer, musician and actor has recreated the art of the minstrel and troubadour, performing, devising and directing magical programmes in live performance and on television and radio all over the world. He is renowned for his work on the medieval poet-singers of Provence. He has created many words-and-music programmes for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Apollo Society and has received many awards including the Gramophone Magazine Critic’s Choice and the International Edison Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Lucie Skeaping Musician and broadcaster presents BBC Radio 3’s long-running series The Early Music Show. She is Director of The Burning Bush (traditional Jewish music) and The City Waites (early English popular music). Her publications include Broadside Ballads (Faber Music, Winner Best Classical Music Book Award 2006) and Let’s Make Tudor Music, (Stainer and Bell, TES award). Elvis McGonagall Compere & Poet was the 2006 World Poetry Slam Champion and compere of the Blue Suede Sporran Club. He is one of the poets who appears on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live to delight the listeners. His poems make you laugh but there’s no mistaking their righteous anger, directed with unerring accuracy at a motley crowd of politicians and other important people. A McGonagall slam resonates with vigour and drags poetry off its pedestal to the pleasure and entertainment of all. Dr George Rawson Author is an art historian based in Glasgow who has written and curated exhibitions on the work of Fra Newbery. His book Fra H Newbery: a Dorset artist was published by Bridport Heritage Forum in 2008. Stephen Warbeck Composer began studying piano and composing at the age of four, and by his mid-teens he had developed an affinity for rock ‘n’ roll as well as for theatre. Since the early 1980s, Stephen has scored numerous stage productions, television projects and feature films. He is perhaps best-known for his Academy Award-winning work on Shakespeare In Love. 57
