Every community takes pride in its
artistic heritage and Purbeck is no
exception. Hence you will find that
many of our lectures this year are
about artists of the past who have
holidayed or lived in this part of Dorset
and whose work inspires artists today.
Some sixty of these are opening their
studios or exhibiting their work at our
main flagship exhibition at Rollington
Barn. The present generation in their
turn offers a helping hand to our artists of the future, and the
Festival includes an extensive programme of workshops and
competitions for Young Purbeck Artists. I am very happy to be
involved with this backdrop of continuing creative endeavour
and I very much hope you enjoy your visits to the Festival’s many
exhibitions and events.

Introduction
For ten years our Arts Festival has stood on its own feet without
Government grants, drawing its strength from the commitment
of its members and the many local firms who have been
unfailingly generous with their support. However the traffic is
not all one way, for the Purbeck Festival brings a sharp focus to
this part of the Dorset coastline, encouraging visitors to make
that extra visit and bring custom to local shops while they are
here. The Festival is the result of months of individual energy
and enthusiasm from people who know that Purbeck is not only
a place of outstanding beauty, but also one of initiative and
enterprise. I hope their vision is infectious and this brochure will
encourage you to stray down the country lanes to see and hear
things that you might otherwise miss and that you will like what
you see.
