A Bronze Age Settlement <strong>at</strong> Aidonia<br />

In the course <strong>of</strong> an interdisciplinary survey project in the Basin <strong>of</strong> Phlious conducted by the Institute for<br />

Pre- and Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology <strong>of</strong> Heidelberg University and the Research Centre for<br />

Archaeometry <strong>of</strong> the Heidelberg Academy <strong>of</strong> Science on a terraced slope near the famous Aidonia<br />

chamber tombs a high density <strong>of</strong> sherds from Early, Middle and especially L<strong>at</strong>e Helladic times were found.<br />

Traces <strong>of</strong> Cyclopean walls indic<strong>at</strong>e an extensive Bronze Age settlement – most likely the community<br />

responsible for the construction <strong>of</strong> the chamber tomb necropolis.<br />

<strong>The</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ion will outline the topography <strong>of</strong> the site, and an overview <strong>of</strong> the traces <strong>of</strong> architecture and<br />

surface finds will be given. A special emphasis will be put on the long-term changes in occup<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />

Mycenaean times. <strong>The</strong> following questions will be addressed: How intensively inhabited was the site <strong>at</strong><br />

wh<strong>at</strong> time? Could there have been monumental architecture? Wh<strong>at</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ions did the inhabitants have to<br />

contemporary places and the major centre <strong>of</strong> Mycenae about 20 km away?<br />

A Mycenaean Cemetery <strong>at</strong> Aidonia near Nemea<br />

At the Aidonia site in Nemea, part <strong>of</strong> a Mycenaean cemetery was excav<strong>at</strong>ed in 1978,1979,1980 and 1986<br />

by the 4 th E.P.C.A., which was then competent for the area, following the extended looting <strong>of</strong> fifteen <strong>of</strong> its<br />

chamber tombs in the 1970’s.<br />

<strong>The</strong> explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> these graves and <strong>of</strong> five more intact graves traced and excav<strong>at</strong>ed brought to light very<br />

important evidence which allude to one <strong>of</strong> the richest cemeteries <strong>of</strong> the Mycenaean world.<br />

<strong>The</strong> monumental architectural form <strong>of</strong> the chamber tombs and <strong>of</strong> the sole pit grave <strong>of</strong> this cemetery, along<br />

with its rich finds, subsequently allude to an important Mycenaean settlement <strong>of</strong> the region, whose prime
