Gary Abundis romped <strong>for</strong> four touchdowns<br />
Saturday as Thurston pounded<br />
Ked<strong>for</strong>d Union, 35-6, in the season finale<br />
<strong>for</strong> both teams.<br />
Don Riehl's Eagles ended the season<br />
with a 3-6 record, winning three<br />
of its last five games while Bob<br />
Atkin s Panthers weren't able to pick<br />
up a win during the year, finishing 0-<br />
9.<br />
"It's the greatest game I've ever<br />
seen a high school player have,"<br />

squad got back on its winning ways<br />
Tuesday night with a 7M4 romp over<br />
Livonia Franklin, after being beaten<br />
by Salem last week.<br />
Linda Kosovac, a 5-11 scoring ace,<br />
set a school record as she pumped in<br />
32 points on <strong>13</strong> field goals and 6-of-8<br />
free throws. She also hauled down 21<br />
rebounds be<strong>for</strong>e leaving the game<br />
early.<br />
Ken Dersey's team.which ran its record<br />
to 12-3. %\so got 11 points from<br />
I>ori Slack, 10 from Cindy Rossi, who<br />
also played a good floor game, and<br />
six each from Sue Pastula and Jill Kilpela.<br />
Livonia Franklin was led by <strong>for</strong>t<br />
ward Kathy Canfield and Karen Dzikowski<br />
who each pumped in 14 points.<br />
Teammate Carol Mulkinen added 11<br />
<strong>for</strong> the Patriots in the non-league contest.<br />
The Pantherettes have averaged 32<br />
percent from the field in their first 14<br />
games while hitting 50 percent of<br />
their free throws.<br />
Redtord Union hosts Livonia Bentlev<br />
in its last home game tonight with<br />
the JV game starting at 6:30 and the<br />
varsity immediately after.<br />
Next Tuesday, strong Livonia Stevenson<br />
will test the Pantherettes on<br />
the Spartan court with JV action starting<br />
at 6 15 p.m<br />
an RU fumble on the Panther 33. Garber's<br />
block sprung Abundis free <strong>for</strong> a<br />
16-yard gain in the drive then Garber<br />
ran seven yards <strong>for</strong> the touchdown<br />
and Abundis added the extra point.<br />
The Eagles upped it to 14-0 minutes<br />
later when Abundis scooped up another<br />
RU fumble and raced 35 yards<br />
down on the sidelines. The ball had<br />
been jarred loose by a bone-crunching<br />
tackle by end Dennis Graff.<br />
Thurston added two more TDs in<br />
the second frame, one on a <strong>13</strong>-yard<br />
off-tackle sprint by Abundis. The run<br />
followed a pass interception by linebacker<br />
Dave Kapaun who picked off<br />
two in the game. Garber also stole<br />
two RU aerials and defensive-end<br />
Rich Droste and Gregg Polidori each<br />
grabbed one interception.<br />
Moving the Eagles 51 yards in four<br />
plays were the TD run besides another<br />
17-yard scamper by Abundis. an 11yard<br />
sweep by Garber and a 10-yard<br />
option keeper by Piligian.<br />
Abundis rambled 27 yards <strong>for</strong> the<br />
fourth Thurston score and John Miller<br />
added the extra point.<br />
Red<strong>for</strong>d Union came out fired up in<br />
the second half and moved 59 yards in<br />
16 plays to get on the scoreboard, but<br />
the kick was blocked as the Eagles<br />
led. 2ft-6. Key man in the drive was<br />
sophomore Brian Macek, a 5^. 150pound<br />
tailback who carried 10 times<br />
<strong>for</strong> 40 of the 51 yards in the drive.<br />
Jim Grimwade passed six yards to<br />
end Mark Ryder <strong>for</strong> the TD.<br />

Abundis did his thing again with a<br />
one-yard TD plunge and John Miller<br />
again converted the kick <strong>for</strong> the final<br />
35-6 count. "It was a good finish <strong>for</strong><br />
our team and the first win we've had<br />
over RU since 1961," said Riehl<br />
"Coach Atkins did a fine job over<br />
there and his kids never quit <strong>for</strong> a mo<br />
ment."<br />
Riehl also high had praise <strong>for</strong> Garber,<br />
who rushed 50 yards in 10 carries.<br />
