Yack outlines
metric progress
Wayne-Westland s Project Metric,
now in its second year of three-year
funding, is striving for recognition as
a national model.
Tom Yack, Project Metric director,
outlined metric progress in a presentation
to the Wayne-Westland Board of
Education Monday.
Yack explained 4he district's goal of
involving elementary schools the first
year, junior highs in the second year
and the senior highs schools in the
third year. During each phase of the
program, there is an emphasis on
community involvement.
"In evaluating our program, we tested
everyone in sight," Yack said.
"We discovered that 72 percent of the
adults tested who did not have children
in metric schools, knew of Project
Metric and its goal of introducing
the metric system to the community."
ACCORDING TO DR. JAMES
DOYLE, district research director, of
the 354 school districts which applied
for metric funding, only 17 succeeded
"If we can show we're a significant
model and that we haven't been duplicated.
we might become the national
model," Doyle said.
STUDENTS AT the Plymouth Christian
Academy, according to Guess's
expectations, should achieve higher
levels of accomplishments than those
at public schools.
The school's board of regents, headed
by chairman Jan Mangan, will outline
the school's grade structure for
next fall after surveying the community's
response to the school concept.
Routledge explained.
About 300 parents attended a meeting
at the church last week to learn
about the school proposal
"The response indicates a really
widespread interest in thus area and
beyond." Routledge says. "The encouraging
thing goes beyond the meeting
itself. We've had a tremendous
amount of phone calls."
The tuition structure at the
Plymouth Christian Academy is tentatively
set at $400 to $500 for kindergarten
and $600 to $800 for elementary
grades.
The school will hold affiliations with
the National Christian Schools Education
Association, the Michigan Association
of Christian Schools and the
American Association of Christian
Schools.
said Canton Treasurer Carl
Parsell. "I think the least we can do
is have the public hearing."
"1 agree," said Trustee Gerald
Cheske. "I feel we have a vast majority
of the people asking for this "
Parsell moved to ask (She DNR to
hunting ban. At Greenstein's
suggestion. Parsell raised Another motion.
He said presently the district's program
is uidergoing a four point evaluation
by the state which has provided
about $175,000 for each of the first
two Project Metric years.
"The four areas for evaluation are
innovativeness, exportability, hard
data evidence and cost effectiveness,"
Doyle said.
"We have to show that projects like
ours exist in less than five percent of
the state's school districts. We have
to prove that we can take our program
and have it be successful in Detroit
or Inkster.
"The hard data is to find out if the
students are learning. Cost effectiveness
measures whether a district can
provide metric learning without it
being a drain on the district's budget."
By the end of this school year 14,500
students will have had some experience
with metric measurement.
Yack i$ hoping to secure an additional
$35,000 grant from the federal government
to advance the project.
BOARD MEMBER AGNES
GREENE questioned the future of
metric in the district after the third
year of the state grant is over.
"At the end of the three years,
every teacher will have been trained
in metrics," Yack answered. "The
only money that might be needed is to
replace equipment the district already
has."
Yack also summed up the national
picture on legislation.
"The House of Representatives has
already passed a metric bill and the
Senate is expected to pass it as well.
The country should be formally on its
way to metric in two months. This
time there was no guideline set,
which indicate to some that it will
take less than 10 years to convert the
county to metric."
Supt. Timothy Dyer added a metric
sidebar.
"One of the speakers I heard on
metric system was explaining how the
wine industry, especially in California,
is suffering.
"Common Market countries will not
accept California wine unless it is in
metric containers. This represents $5
billion in trade so the California wine
producers are bottling two ways—one
for the export market and one for domestic
consumption.
"Without metric bottling, they
would be frozen out of the market."
