Changing weather brings
slippery Intermountain roads
Temperatures just a week ago were as
high as the mid 60s, but quickly dropped
to early morning lows in the teens, causing
a few mishaps on the area roads.
Light snows fell Saturday requiring big
rig drivers and others without the proper
tires to chain up before traveling over
Packages for troops
Hatchet summit. Tow truck companies
responded to a few motorists finding their
vehicles off the roads and in precarious
positions with no serious injuries.
More snow is predicted in the coming
days with up to 3 inches possible on
Thursday, notes the weather service.
A local group, calling themselves the Calendar Girls, packaged
and prepared 33 boxes for troops in Afghanistan that included
homemade baked goods, new clothing and other items. They
have made four earlier shipments similar to this one in early
December, the first in February 2010, for a total of 132 boxes
sent to the troops. They have estimated thousands of dollars
of their own money was used to purchase many of the goods.
Future
forest loss
is termed
‘significant’
A U.S. Forest Service
report forecasts natural
resource management
trends and challenges for
next 50 years and projects
significant forest loss due
to suburbanization and
land fragmentation
The comprehensive
report released Tuesday
examines the ways
expanding populations,
increased urbanization,
and changing land-use
patterns could profoundly
impact natural resources,
including water supplies,
nationwide during the next
50 years.
The study shows the
potential for significant
loss of privately-owned
forests to development
and fragmentation, which
could substantially reduce
benefits from forests that
the public now enjoys
including clean water, wildlife
habitat, forest products
and others.
“We should all be concerned
by the projected
decline in our nation’s forests
and the corresponding
loss of the many critical
services they provide such
as clean drinking water,
wildlife habitat, carbon
sequestration, wood products
and outdoor recreation,”
said Agriculture
Under Secretary Harris
Sherman.
“Tuesday’s report offers
a sobering perspective on
what is at stake and the
need to maintain our commitment
to conserve these
critical assets.”
U.S Forest Service scientists
and partners at
universities, non-profits
and other agencies found
urban and developed
land areas in the U.S. will
increase 41 percent by
2060.
Forested areas will be
most impacted by this
growth, with losses ranging
from 16 to 34 million
acres in the lower 48
states.
The study also examines
the effect of climate
change on forests and the
Christmas
break soon;
Jamboree set
By PAIGE PFADT
Burney High School
Next week will be the
last week before Christmas
Break, and the school has
many ways to show holiday
spirit!
Starting on Thursday, the
Jamboree Basketball tournament
is sure to be a blast!
The first game on Thursday
will be the J.V. Girls’ game
starting at 1 o’clock. Several
games will follow after that,
as the tournament goes until
Saturday. This year’s guest
teams are: Fall River, Mercy,
Portola, and Waterford.
Good luck to our basketball
teams, and we encourage
the community to come and
participate in the wonderful
tradition that is Jamboree!
The annual lip sync competition
will happen at the
Friday rally, at noon! Community
members are welcome
to attend to see each
class dance and lip sync to
various Christmas carols.
The assembly will start at
noon, and is sure to be a
great time!
The door decorating contest
began on Monday and
will end at the end of the day
Thursday, as judging will take
place Thursday. Each class
will decorate their adviser’s
door in Christmas decorations.
In the past, the judges
have looked for creativity,
simplicity, beauty, or class
when judging the doors. The
classes have also used several
mediums in creating their
masterpieces: paper, tinsel,
ornaments, and lights have
all been used in the past!
The online student school
newspaper will launch on
19th. Several BHS students
have written columns for the
newspaper. Check out www.
theburneyb.org in order to
see the Burney B in its debut!
Would you like to give back
to the community this Christmas?
Mariah Van Cleave
will be collecting unwrapped,
new toys as well as monetary
donations for the Shriners
Hospital during Jamboree.
Help support Mariah’s senior
project by bringing your
donations to the gym lobby
during Jamboree.
This week’s motivational
quote of the week is “The
task of a leader is to get
his people from where they
are to where they have not
been.” by Henry A. Kissinger.
This quote is brought to you
by Luke Urlie of the leadership
class!
Out to Pastor
So, this is how the
world ends
By DR. JAMES L SNYDER, D.Litt
Since the election, there has been a lot of jibberjabber
by the kings and queens of jibber-jabber about
some financial cliff we are facing. I have no idea what
they are talking about, and I have a suspicion they do
not either, but if I am to guess I would say, it is not a
great leap of faith.
The great thing about
being a jibber-jabber is you
do not have to know what you
are jibber-jabbering about. In
fact, the less you know the
more you can jabber your jib.
As one great American
consumer and I only speak
for myself, I am tired of all of
this nonsense.
In the light of this, I bring
good news concerning this
ominous financial cliff. I am
always happy to bring a little
bit of good news in the midst of all of the twaddle and
idiotic jibber-jabbing that goes on in our country. I
know good news does not make the front page but
I think it helps those of us who are tired of the bad
news.
The good news concerning this financial cliff is
that we do not have to worry about it at all, thanks to
the Mayan’s calendar. Wherever they are, somebody
needs to congratulate them on saving not only our
world but also our country from a financial disaster.
If we had the time, I would recommend that they be
nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
According to the Mayan’s calendar, the end of
the world, whatever that means, is to take place on
December 21. How they had the foresight to come
to our rescue at such a portentous time we will never
know. Thanks to them, we do not have to worry about
any financial cliff that might be looming ahead of us.
I think this should be enough to silence all of this
political jibber-jabber the rest of us are tired of hearing.
As grateful as I am to the Mayan calendar, I do
have a little bone to pick with them.
I do not mind people predicting the end of the world.
Really, they have nothing on me. For years I have predicted
the end of the world at the end of every month.
Believe me, some months I really came close to the
end of the world. At least the end of my world.
Now the bone I have to pick is simply this. Why
did they pick December 21, which is four days before
Christmas? This is very frustrating to me. If they would
have consulted with me, I would have suggested
maybe the end of the month. After all, give everybody
a few days to enjoy his or her last Christmas.
Personally, I do not mind missing New Year’s Eve.
In my opinion, it is all hype and nothing else. After all,
Dick Clark is gone, so what is the use of celebrating
New Year’s Eve? In my lifetime, I have seen enough
people drop the ball; I do not need to stay up to midnight
to watch everybody drop the ball. But, Christmas
Day, that’s a whole different ballgame.
The problem I face is simply this, if I buy a Christmas
present and the world actually does end on
December 21, I have wasted my money. Being a tightwad
such as I am, that is a most blasphemous thing to
do. On the other hand, if I do not buy Christmas presents
assuming that the world will end on December
21, I am going to be redder in the face on Christmas
day than Santa’s suit. The Gracious Mistress of the
Parsonage will not accept some lame excuse that I
thought the world was going to end on December 21.
This whole thing has put me in quite a quandary.
I know there have been hundreds of people down
through the years predicting the end of the world. The
problem I have is, what day is going to be right, and
who is to say when?
Many people are putting a lot of credence on this
Mayan calendar. Some are pointing out how brilliant
these people were. However, I have one simple question
to ask is.
If the Mayans were so smart, where in the world are
they now?
I am rather suspicious of their disappearance,
especially, when we come to the end of the world
according to their prediction. If they can predict the
end of our world, why were they not able to predict the
end of their world?
So, let us say December 21 is the end of the world.
What I am doing to prepare myself for that is stockpiling
Apple Fritters. I do not know what the end of
the world means, I do not know the condition I am
going to be in, but I do know that an Apple Fritter is the
panacea for all ailments. If I just have enough Apple
Fritters, I know I can face anything, even the end of
the world.
It would be nice that the last thing I do before the
world ends is savor a delicious Apple Fritter.
Actually, I have something much better.
“But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this
is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you”
(1 Peter 1:25 KJV).
I do not know how the world is going to end, but I do
know who is really in charge.
Exciting
things
Editor:
There have been some
exciting things happening at
Burney Elementary over the
last few months.
As most of you already
know, this is the second year
for the elementary school
being led by Principal Marcy
Schmidt and under her
leadership she has greatly
encouraged parents and volunteers
to become an active
part of the schools programs
such as Red Ribbon Week,
Celebrity Jog-a-thon and
Track and Field Day as well
as numerous other events
the school participates in.
But there is a new program
that has been started by
school employee and active
PTA member Jeanine Ferguson
that not a lot of people
have heard about, and as a
parent myself with one child
already enrolled at BES, I am
greatly encouraged about.
After reading the book
“The Boy Who Changed
the World,” written by Andy
Andrews, Jeanine was
inspired and approached Ms.
Schmidt about her desire to
start what she called “The
Butterfly Effect.”
Jeanine’s goal was to
implement a program that
would encourage all of the
students at BES to take an
active role in their day-to-day
behaviors and attitudes and
along the way, be rewarded
for the good things they do
and say that impact those
around them.
This idea fit in hand with
Ms. Schmidt’s three school
rules: Safety, Respect and
Responsibility.
Every choice we make,
whether good or bad, has a
ripple effect, or what some
call “The Butterfly Effect.”
Since this program began
I have seen formyself the
positive changes in many
of the students. They are
excited by the fact that they
are recognized when they
do something good and are
rewarded for it.
Just to hear the words
“great job” or “well done” has
a huge impact.
For example, if a student
chooses to eat their healthy
foods at lunch before their
dessert, they are given a
raffle ticket with their name
on it and entered to win a
prize bucket of recess toys
for their classroom.
They can see immediately
that their good choices and
following the school rules
positively affected their entire
classroom!
The students can also
earn WOW! Buttons.
These buttons are given
to a student that does something
that really goes above
and beyond expected, and
makes you say “WOW!”
when you see or hear about
it.
These students are also
recognized at the monthly
student council led assemblies.
It is the ultimate goal
that no good deed goes
unnoticed.
On October 6th of this
year, I had the pleasure of
attending the 4th Annual
Harvest of Hope Fundraising
Banquet along with Jeanine,
parent/teacher Joy Ford,
teacher Ginny Casaurang,
and Principal Marcy Schmidt.
The guest speaker that
evening was Andy Andrews.
Now if you don’t know who
Andy Andrews is, he is
revered as one of the greatest
and most influential motivational
speakers, as well as
a New York Times Best Selling
Author, and all around
good guy who just happens
to be very funny.
Before dinner we were
given the opportunity to
go back and meet Andy in
person.
That in itself was very
exciting but even more so
was the fact that Andy and
his people had already heard
of Jeanine and the work that
she and Ms. Schmidt had
been doing at the school and
were eager to meet them and
tell them how excited they
were for them and that they
would be keeping in touch to
hear how things were going.
Since then, Jeanine was
invited to speak with Andy
on his Podcast, In The Loop
with Andy Andrews, about
the things they hace been
working on at the school.
Burney Elementary has
also received from Andy
boxes of beautiful books,
both “The Boy Who Changed
the World”, and “The Butterfly
Effect”, enough for every
classroom to have a copy as
well as the library and then
some.
This enormous effort could
not have happened without
the effort and contributions
made by the entire school’s
faculty.
Rangeland expected to
continue slow decline passing
-From Page 1
services forests provide.
Most importantly, over the
long-term, climate change
could have significant effects
on water availability, making
the U.S. potentially more vulnerable
to water shortages,
especially in the Southwest
and Great Plains, the reports
shows.
Population growth in more
arid regions will require more
drinking water. Recent trends
in agricultural irrigation and
land scaping techniques also
will boost water demands.
“Our nation’s forests and
grasslands are facing significant
challenges. This
assessment strengthens our
commitment to accelerate
restoration efforts that will
improve forest resiliency and
conservation of vitally important
natural resources,” said
U.S. Forest Service Chief
Tom Tidwell.
The assessment’s projections
are influenced by a
set of scenarios with varying
assumptions about U.S.
population and economic
growth, global population
and economic growth, global
wood energy consumption
and U.S. land use change
from 2010 to 2060.
Using those scenarios,
the report forecasts the following
key trends:
• Forest areas will decline
as a result of development,
REPAIR, REPAINT,
REFINISH, REJOICE!
With joy in our hearts, we thank
you for your generous support
this year. Happy Holidays!
Burney & BV
clash in Bieber
The Burney High basketball
teams took a short trip
to Bieber for a preseason
matchup with the Big Valley
Cardinals on Dec. 11.
The boys varsity squads
matched up for the third time
this season. The Raiders
held a two-point advantage at
the intermission then pulled
away in the second half for
a 55-39 victory to complete
the seasonal hat trick.
Big Valley (0-7) held a five
point lead, 14-9, at the end
of the first quarter. It was the
fist time the Cardinals have
led the Raiders in nine quarters
of action.
However, Burney (3-3)
countered with a dominant
defensive effort in the second
quarter limiting the Cardinals
to five points to turn the tide.
Michael Gallagher had
a “workhorse game” for the
Raiders finishing with 21
points, 10 rebounds and five
steals.
The girls varsity and JV
teams met up Saturday at
the Chester tournament and
Tuesday’s games ended in
similar fashion
The Big Valley girls varsity
squad earned a 42-36 victory
with a standout performance
by Courtney James,
16 points and nine boards.
“Our little squad of six
played tough,” said assistant
coach Sharmi Stevenson.
The junior varsity girls
started the evening with a
back-and forth battle, won
by the lady Raiders 53-48
improving their record to 3-0.
Foul trouble became an
issue for Big Valley with only
six girls on roster. Despite
having a player foul out in the
fourth quarter, the lady Cardinals
finished the game with
17 fourth quarter points.
Burney senior guard Selina Islas (33) drives past Hayfork senior guard Lauren Kaz (22) in game Friday
at the Raider gym.
Lady Raiders cut down by visiting
Hayfork after strong first quarter run
The Burney lady Raiders
hit floor running Friday night
matching visiting Hayfork’s
play through the first quarter
of action. But the team
found a lid on the basket for
much of the remanding game
losing 56-27.
Burney trailed by three at
the end of the first quarter,
16-13. Hailey Sibert hit the
first shot of the game to put
get the lady Raiders started
and finished with six points
in the quarter. But tide took a
drastic turn in second as the
lady Timberjacks added 10
points to the halftime deficit
and cruising to victory.
“The girls did a lot of things
well,” said Burney coach
Tara Jones. “They came out
ready to play. They handled
their (Hayfork’s) press with
no problem and played tough
defense for the entire game.
We just couldn’t make a shot
after the first quarter.”
Hayfork sophomore guard
Rachael Halderman had a big
night with 20 points, most of
them coming in the first half.
Burney junior Daisy Manzo
was assigned to defend the
Hayfork sharpshooter in the
The Fall River Bulldogs
ventured into the Lions’ den
for three games of hardwood
action with host Redding
Christian Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The Fall River boys varsity
and junior varsity teams
fell on the losing end of some
tough battles while the girls
won their contest in convincing
fashion. The JV girls did
not play.
at the point guard position,
Jones said.
JV Girls
The Burney junior varsity
girls team started the evening
with a dominating performance,
defeating their
counterpart 53-14 to remain
unbeaten at 4-0.
The Burney girls scored
33 points in the first quarter
and went to halftime leading
perienced Redding Christian
crew to take control of the
game early and cruised to a
46-26 victory. The Fall River
boys varsity team stayed
close through three quarter
of play, but Lions pulled away
in the fourth for a 56-42 win.
The JV Bulldogs put forth a
comeback effort outscoring
the Lions 14-9 in the final
quarter, but fell short losing
45-40.
The Fall River varsity girls
41-4.
In a show of sportsmanship,
Burney stopped the
with pressure defense and
running the floor early.
Coach Perry Thompson said
the lopsided victory allowed
the bench players to get an
extended amount of playing
time work on development.
“It was important that we
run offensive sets and take
the time to work different
things,” he said.
JV Boys
The Burney JV boys
scored 16 points in the third
quarter and trailed the JV
Timberjacks by a bucket to
start the fourth. But the team
struggled at closing time and
was outscored by 14 in the
final period losing the contest
63-49.
The Raider crew stayed
close through the first three
quarters. Hayfork held a onepoint
edge to start the second
quarter and led 30-25 the
intermission. Burney countered
in the third quarter by
outscoring Hayfork 16-13 to
cut the deficit to two, 43-41.
by Parker and Alex Whiteny
with four each, while holding
to 8-1 on the season.
In varsity boys action, Fall
River (3-4) took a four-point
lead midway through the first
quarter. Klay Worthan drove
the lane for a layup and
Jonny Westlund sank a pair
9-5 advantage. But the lead
wouldn’t hold for long.
Redding Christian’s Garret
Thomas evened the score
with 3-pointers, the first of
four on the night. David Robinson
sank a pair from the
line to put Loins up for good
as they finished the quarter
on an 11-2 run for a 16-11
advantage.
with a coast-to-coast layup
and trey to ignite 8-2 run for
the Lions. Fall River trailed
by nine with time in the half
ready to expire when Gallion
dropped in a 3-ball to cut the
halftime deficit to six, 30-24.
The Bulldogs started the
second half with a lot of
vigor and close the gap the
34-31 about half way through
the third quarter. Westlund
and older brother Michael
hit back-to-back shots Klay
Worthan capped the run
defense stiffed down the
stretch and finished the quarter
Gallion finished with 11
points and Michael Westlund
chipped in with nine.
Thomas drained a pair
3’s to put the Lions up by 10
stayed within the eight
to 10-point range though
most of the quarter, but could
not close the gap.
Jace Neugebauer led the
JV squad with 17 points,
Bulldogs sweep way to
tourney championship
The Fall River Bulldogs swept
though the Tulelake basketball
tournament with a mark of 3-0 to
win the Honker Classic championship.
The Fall River varsity club
defeated a pair of southern Oregon
teams, Bonanza and Henley, and
the host Honkers to win the tourney
crown. The Bulldogs struggled
a little during the first half of their
contests, but finished strong and
slammed doors shut for a pair of
20 point victories and a win over
Henley.
Fall River opened the tournament
against Bonanza on Friday.
Big Blue scored more points in the
third quarter than they did through
the entire first half and won the contest
63-43. The Bulldogs faced the
host Honkers for the second time
this season. Tulelake defeated Fall
River by 5 in a third place battle
at the Trinity tourney. However,
this Saturday would be different.
The Bulldogs flexed their muscle
early and left no doubt downing the
Honkers 68-47. The team finished
with a win over Henley.
Coach Scott Gallion said the
Bulldogs played their “best game of
the year” against the Honkers.
Tulelake jumped out to a 7-0
lead to put Fall River on its heels.
But the Bulldogs regrouped and
countered to finish the quarter with
a 20-16 lead.
“We hit a couple threes, got a
couple steals and then we started
rebounding better and we just kept
it going,” Gallion said. “If we play
like that, we are going to do well in
league,” he added.
Fall River limited the Honkers
to five points in the second quarter
Tournament.
Lady Grizzlies maul competition
at Fall River Girls Tournament
Fall River brought in some tough
competition for their girls home
tournament. The Lassen lady Grizzlies
dominated the varsity competition
behind the post play of their
6-3 senior Emily Terwilliger finishing
3-0. Lassen defeated Etna 30
points and Los Molinos 50. The
lady Bulldogs provided the tourney
champs with some competition, but
fell short losing 66-52.
Fall River coach Kathy Jones
said she was happy the her team
defended the post play of Terwilliger,
but there wasn’t much they
could do.
“She was just too big for us to
defend,” Jones said of Terwilliger. “I
was really happy we were able to
hang in there with them and make
a game of it.”
Fall River opened the two-day
affair against league a foe in the
Etna lady Lions on Friday.
The lady Bulldogs trailed by
seven at the half and battled back
to take a 1-point lead with just 21
ticks remaining to play. The lady
Lions trapped the ball on the baseline
and forced a turnover.
On the ensuring inbound play,
Etna’s Sara Hoyt hit a short base-
and went to intermission holding a
32-21 advantage.
The Bulldogs dominated the
second half, which was a common
theme throughout the tournament,
and closed the door on the competition.
“We did a better job coming out
in the second half, then we did to
start the games that’s for sure,”
Gallion said.
Every player on the Bulldogs
roster scored against Tulelake.
“We chipped away in the second
Fall River freshman Megan Gallion
Los Molinos had a tough time
at the tournament. The lady Bulldogs
Through it all Jones thought the
team had a good learning experience
with some hard-fought games.
“I’m was really happy with our
post play throughout the tournament,”
she said. “Emily (Vigil) and
job working in the paint, and it’s
Maryann Parker was named
to the all tourney team tallying 46
Lady Bulldogs compete at
home tourney, finish 1-2
The Fall River girls junior varsity
basketball team finished their home
tournament with mark of 1-2.
The lady Bulldogs were hoping
to finish the two-day tournament
with a pair of wins after losing to
Etna on Friday, 51-43.
Caitlyn Braden led Fall River with
14 points and 12 rebounds. KayCee
Jasperse added 13 and nine, Sarah
Westlund pitched in with 11 points,
eight boards and two steals.
Fall River started Saturday with
a 45-18 trouncing of Los Molinos
and finished up agasint Lassen.
Braden led the way with 13
points and 11 boards. Amy Brown
and Westlund had six steals each.
In the finale, the lady Bulldogs
inched ahead in the second quarter
and held a 26-25 edge at the half.
Lady Cardinals
fight to finish at
Block M tourney
The Big Valley lady Cardinals
fought to the finish at Modoc’s
Block M Tournament earning a win
and nearly stealing another, finishing
with a mark of 1-2.
The six player squad lost to
Modoc on Thursday, 37-28, but
returned to beat Lakeview (Or.) in
overtime on Friday, 38-36.
On Saturday, Big Valley led
Weed for three quarters. But the
lady Cougars roared back in the
fourth to win the contest 34-26.
Lassen turned to a more physical
style of play in the third quarter
and brawled their way to a 16-point
lead to stat the fourth, limiting the
lady Bulldogs to just four points in
the period, and went on to win the
contest 58-40.
Westlund led Fall River with
13 points and nine steals, Brown
helped out with 10 points and
Braden chipped in with six and 11
rebounds.
Scrappy Cards,
comeback bids
stopped short at
Block M Tourney
The value of each offensive possession
in a basketball game can
be easily overlooked through the
duration of a game. The Big Valley
boys team gained some perspective
at Modoc’s Block M Tournament.
The squad got the most of their
second half their possessions and
erased two double-digit fourth
deficits nearly stealing wins from
both Modoc and Lakeview (Or.).
However, the clock expired in both
games leaving the Cardinal crew
still searching for that elusive first
victory, dropping to 0-10 on the
season.
“As a team, I think they are
starting to understand the value of
each possession, said Big Valley
coach Bob Bertelsen. “They ran the
offense and made sure they got a
good shot every time down, and
they just kept closing in and closing
in and they almost pulled it out.”
The Cardinals opened the tournament
on Thursday against the
host Braves. Modoc jumped out a
21-13 first quarter lead and started
the fourth up 51-38.
BV tried to make every possession
count and slowly closed the
deficit to 1 during the final seconds.
The Cardinals rimmed the
go-ahead shot and the Braves
grabbed the rebound. Modoc hit a
pair of free-throws to up by three
and held on for a 66-63 win.
Hunter Hawkins had a breakout
tournament driving the lane shooting
the 3-ball. The junior guard
drained seven shots from behind
the arch finishing with a game high
26 points against Modoc..
The Cardinals finished the tournament
against Lakeview (Ore.)
on Saturday. BV stumbled in the
second quarter, getting out-scored
22-4 in the period for 16-point deficit
at intermission.
The team methodically worked
its way back into the game, but the
Honkers were able to hold on for
67-63 win
Patients was a virtue in the
second half as the Cardinals once
again clawed thier way back to
make it a one-possession game
late in the fourth.
Ben Torres led the Cardinals
with 21 points and dominated the
fourth quarter. The Honkers tightened
thier post defense, then
Torres found the open shooter as
BV dominated the quater.
Certified nursing aid, 95
Geneva Almeda Gilliam
Hollandsworth, beloved
mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother died
peacefully at the age of 95
on Dec. 11, 2012, at Mayers
Memorial Hospital in Fall
River Mills, California.
Geneva was born in
DePew,
Oklahoma
on Sept.
22, 1917.
She was the
eighth child
in a family of
10 children.
She is
the last child
of John and Lillie Gilliam to
leave her legacy of life for
her children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren.
Geneva saw many
changes in our world during
her 95 years and had some
fascinating stories to tell.
Leaving Oklahoma in the
1940s to bring her three
children to California, she
worked hard to provide her
family with a loving and safe
home.
She had many jobs
throughout her lifetime - she
worked in agriculture, a shell
factory during World War II,
the medical field, and the
food, clothing, and retail
industries.
Eventually she earned her
Certified Nursing Aid certificate
and worked compassionately
with the elderly in a
long-term facility in Whittier,
California until her retirement.
After retiring, Geneva
lived in Southern California
for many years before following
her daughter and her
family to the Intermountain
area.
Settling in Burney, Geneva
lived the last 19 years of her
life in the Mt. Senior Apartments.
She enjoyed time
with family, friends, and her
Intermountain Baptist Church
group.
Geneva led a full life with
several interests and hobbies.
She was a great historian.
Her love of genealogy and
family history provided her
family with enormous knowledge
of their personal history
through her research and
family tales.
Geneva was a member of
the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.
She was quite an accomplished
oil painting and
sketch artist.
She loved to crochet and
sew, and shared many of her
creations with her family.
Geneva was the very
proud mother of three wonderful
children. Son Dan Self
“Major General Jackson
brings more than thirty
years of problem-solving and
management experience to
Parks, serving most recently
as the Commanding General
of Marine bases across the
Southwestern U.S. and tens
of thousands of troops and
civilians,” said Brown.
“Under Major General
Jackson’s leadership, I am
confident that the stewardship
of California’s beaches,
forests, estuaries, dunes and
wetlands is in good hands
and that the confidence and
trust of Californians in our
Parks Department will be
restored.”
Major General Jackson,
