TRAILS
The many trails in the Flinders Ranges showcase stunning landscapes at
every turn. Be inspired by views of sweeping valleys, ancient ranges and
wide open skies. Explore fascinating European heritage sites via two of
Australia’s most famous trails.
Trails SA is a state government initiative
with partners in local government and peak
recreational organisations, that promotes a
network of quality walking, cycling, horse-riding,
canoeing and diving trails.
HEYSEN TRAIL
Take the opportunity to see South
Australia at its best – walk the
Heysen Trail. Enjoy the diversity of
scenic landscapes and connect with nature.
From Cape Jervis on the tip of the Fleurieu
Peninsula to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders
Ranges, the Heysen Trail visits some of the
state’s most spectacular landscapes.
In the Flinders Ranges the trail’s route passes
through mountain ranges, hillsides covered with
native pine, gum-lined creeks and gorges, and
rocky outcrops, with sections to suit both casual
walkers and serious hikers.
The trail enters the southern ranges north
of Crystal Brook and heads through the
plantations of Wirrabara Forest and then onto
the rangelands of Mount Remarkable National
Park and Mount Brown and The Dutchmans
Stern Conservation Parks. In the central Flinders
you walk into the heart of the Wilpena Pound
then onto Flinders Ranges National Park and
the spectacular Aroona Valley, edged with the
majestic Heysen Ranges before ending your
journey in the scenic Parachilna Gorge. There’s
a range of accommodation and camping sites
on or near the trail through the Flinders Ranges.
The Heysen Trail Northern Guide covers the trail
from Spalding to Parachilna Gorge. It provides
maps, landscape profiles, locations of supplies
and facilities, important contacts, fast facts
about local towns, visitor contacts, as well as
accommodation and shorter walks.
MAWSON TRAIL
The Mawson Trail is Australia’s premier
off-road cycling trail. On back roads,
forest tracks and single tracks, this trail
runs through some of the most beautiful and
spectacular country in South Australia including
the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa, and the Clare
and Gilbert valleys before ending in the Flinders
Ranges. The Flinders Ranges section of the
Mawson Trail provides cyclists with breathtaking
scenery and a score of adventures.
North of Laura the route meanders along dirt
roads to the Wirrabara Forest, where riders
can see fantastic views of Mount Remarkable.
Wide roads lead to the towns of Melrose,
Wilmington and Quorn, home of the historic
Pichi Richi Railway.
Through the ruins of Simmonston and Wilson
townships, the trail travels to Hawker, and on to
Flinders Ranges National Park, with the iconic
Wilpena Pound in view for most of the end of
this section. A mixture of bitumen and short,
steep dirt sections through the park end with
a graded road leading into Blinman, the end
of the trail.
While it has some of the best riding and
landscapes, this section of the trail is sparsely
populated and has limited shade, facilities and
accommodation, so riders must be
well prepared.
