The many trails in the <strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong> showcase stunning landscapes at<br />

every turn. Be inspired by views of sweeping valleys, ancient ranges and<br />

wide open skies. Explore fascinating European heritage sites via two of<br />

Australia’s most famous trails.<br />

Trails SA is a state government initiative<br />

with partners in local government and peak<br />

recreational organisations, that promotes a<br />

network of quality walking, cycling, horse-riding,<br />

canoeing and diving trails.<br />

HEYSEN TRAIL<br />

Take the opportunity to see South<br />

Australia at its best – walk the<br />

Heysen Trail. Enjoy the diversity of<br />

scenic landscapes and connect with nature.<br />

From Cape Jervis on the tip of the Fleurieu<br />

Peninsula to Parachilna Gorge in the <strong>Flinders</strong><br />

<strong>Ranges</strong>, the Heysen Trail visits some of the<br />

state’s most spectacular landscapes.<br />

In the <strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong> the trail’s route passes<br />

through mountain ranges, hillsides covered with<br />

native pine, gum-lined creeks and gorges, and<br />

rocky outcrops, with sections to suit both casual<br />

walkers and serious hikers.<br />

The trail enters the southern ranges north<br />

of Crystal Brook and heads through the<br />

plantations of Wirrabara Forest and then onto<br />

the rangelands of Mount Remarkable National<br />

Park and Mount Brown and The Dutchmans<br />

Stern Conservation Parks. In the central <strong>Flinders</strong><br />

you walk into the heart of the Wilpena Pound<br />

then onto <strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong> National Park and<br />

the spectacular Aroona Valley, edged with the<br />

majestic Heysen <strong>Ranges</strong> before ending your<br />

journey in the scenic Parachilna Gorge. There’s<br />

a range of accommodation and camping sites<br />

on or near the trail through the <strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong>.<br />

The Heysen Trail Northern Guide covers the trail<br />

from Spalding to Parachilna Gorge. It provides<br />

maps, landscape profiles, locations of supplies<br />

and facilities, important contacts, fast facts<br />

about local towns, visitor contacts, as well as<br />

accommodation and shorter walks.<br />

MAWSON TRAIL<br />

The Mawson Trail is Australia’s premier<br />

off-road cycling trail. On back roads,<br />

forest tracks and single tracks, this trail<br />

runs through some of the most beautiful and<br />

spectacular country in South Australia including<br />

the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa, and the Clare<br />

and Gilbert valleys before ending in the <strong>Flinders</strong><br />

<strong>Ranges</strong>. The <strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong> section of the<br />

Mawson Trail provides cyclists with breathtaking<br />

scenery and a score of adventures.<br />

North of Laura the route meanders along dirt<br />

roads to the Wirrabara Forest, where riders<br />

can see fantastic views of Mount Remarkable.<br />

Wide roads lead to the towns of Melrose,<br />

Wilmington and Quorn, home of the historic<br />

Pichi Richi Railway.<br />

Through the ruins of Simmonston and Wilson<br />

townships, the trail travels to Hawker, and on to<br />

<strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong> National Park, with the iconic<br />

Wilpena Pound in view for most of the end of<br />

this section. A mixture of bitumen and short,<br />

steep dirt sections through the park end with<br />

a graded road leading into Blinman, the end<br />

of the trail.<br />

While it has some of the best riding and<br />

landscapes, this section of the trail is sparsely<br />

populated and has limited shade, facilities and<br />

accommodation, so riders must be<br />

well prepared.<br />
