The coastal town of Port Germein is home to
arguably the prettiest wooden jetty in Australia
– and it’s certainly the longest. Once a whopping
1.7km (the longest in the southern hemisphere)
and supplying wheat ships from the other side
of the world, the jetty has been shortened by
storms and the passage of time. Other Port
Germein highlights include the stunning Germein
Gorge, the historic ruins on the drive east to
Murray Town and the look out at Port Flinders.
Nearby Telowie Gorge Conservation Park also
has a great array of flora and fauna.
PORT GERMEIN CARAVAN PARK
Ideally located 2 km off the highway. Beach pleasures

With its origins firmly etched into the railway
history of Australia, Peterborough is a
trainspotter’s paradise. Established in 1875 on
the promise of a new line between Adelaide
and the ore-rich town of Silverton in New South
Wales, Peterborough is one of a few places
in Australia where you can still see the three
railway gauges (Broad, Standard and Narrow)
together.
As you enter Peterborough on the RM Willliams
Way (see page 65) it becomes evident the
town is railway obsessed as each of the four
entrances has a scale model steam train
positioned on the side of the road. The town’s
railway roots are celebrated at a number of
attractions, including the visitor information
outlet in an old passenger carriage that was
used on the original 1917 East West Express.
The Steamtown Peterborough Railway Museum
features a great collection of rolling-stock, the
only triple gauge turntable and one of the few
remaining roundhouses in Australia. There are
guided tours of the complex most days.
Other things to see include Victoria Park with its
man-made lake and islands, the Town History
Walk, the Majestic Town Hall and Federation
Quilt (it took 1700 hours to complete), Dragons
Rest Habitat Garden, Meldonfield (makers of
miniature horse-drawn vehicles), the Railway
Memorial and the Restored Y Class Locomotive
in the Main Street.
