FLINDERS RANGES<br />
It’s big and bold, but it can also<br />
be intensely personal.<br />
Journeys in the central and northern <strong>Flinders</strong><br />
<strong>Ranges</strong> are captivating. Deep gorges and<br />
majestic hills hold the secrets of ancient<br />
times. Tracks to tempt even the fussiest<br />
4WD enthusiast. Feral food and luxury<br />
accommodation at Parachilna. Bush picnic<br />
races at Beltana and Blinman. Secret caves and<br />
gorgeous gorges. And at the heart of it all is the<br />
awesome amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound – its<br />
saw-toothed peaks steeped in “Yura Muda”<br />
legends of the Adnyamathanha people.<br />
The perfect appetiser to this ancient region<br />
is Wadlata <strong>Outback</strong> Centre in Port Augusta.<br />
Hands-on displays throw a fascinating light on<br />
everything from Aborginal creation stories to<br />
pioneering feats and the living landscape.<br />
Botanical buffs shouldn’t miss Port Augusta’s<br />
award-winning <strong>Australian</strong> Arid Lands Botanic<br />
Garden, with 12km of walking tracks and a<br />
plethora of amazing flora that grows nowhere<br />
else in the world.<br />
And then it’s time to get out there: to the<br />
delightful Pichi Richi Railway at Quorn; to<br />
Hawker and the Aboriginal art of Yourambulla<br />
Caves; to hearty meals in the woolshed at<br />
Rawnsley Park; to high peaks and higher spirits.<br />
Everything about the northern <strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong> is<br />
spectacular: the Aboriginal culture, the colours,<br />
the starry skies, the bounding ‘roos and the<br />
shiny Sturt’s Desert Pea, the rugged peaks<br />
at sunset, and the dappled gorges in the heat<br />
of the day.<br />
At the spectacular Arkaroola Wilderness<br />
Sanctuary, the Sprigg family runs tag-along tours<br />
over some of the most challenging 4WD tracks<br />
in Australia. Doug, an expert on everything<br />
from geology to astronomy, will also reveal the<br />
mysteries of the night sky in one of the best<br />
equipped observatories in the country.<br />
At Iga Warta the Coulthards share their<br />
Adnyamathanha culture (both traditional and<br />
contemporary) on a series of guided walks,<br />
overnight camps and cultural tours.<br />
The creation of the <strong>Flinders</strong> <strong>Ranges</strong> can also<br />
be explored on the Aboriginal Dreaming Trail,<br />
a two-day, self-drive round trip that includes<br />
the Aboriginal communities of Nepabunna and<br />
Iga Warta – brochures are available at major<br />
attractions and visitor information centres<br />
