DRIVING 2WD + 4WD
You don’t need a 4WD to have fun exploring the secrets of the region.
But if you do, lock those hubs and lock onto some serious adventure!
You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the quality
of roads both sealed and unsealed in the region.
Although many are unsealed, it’s still possible
to explore a number of areas in a conventional
two-wheel drive (2WD) vehicle.
2WD
You don’t have to have a 4WD to have an
adventure in the Flinders Ranges and Outback
– even on the legendary tracks. In the Flinders
Ranges, Moralana Scenic Drive, and the
Parachilna, Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges can
be explored in a 2WD vehicle most of the year.
In the Outback, the Oodnadatta track is normally
fine for sedans, but call ahead to check. You
will need to alter your driving on unsealed roads
to take the journey safely. Weather conditions
can change the condition of unsealed roads,
so talk to visitor information centres, locals and
other travellers on your journey and contact the
Transport SA hotline on on 1300 361 033 for the
latest information.
4WD
The Flinders Ranges is a must for any 4WD
enthusiast. It’s a peaceful and awe-inspiring
landscape of rugged, jagged mountains and
ever-changing colours both humble and inspire.
Wildlife is abundant here, with kangaroos, emus,
lizards and wedge-tailed eagles a common sight.
The Outback has some of the greatest desert
4WD destinations in the world. Follow the trails
blazed by the explorers, stockmen and Afghan
camel drivers, the Overland Telegraph and the
original Ghan railway.
4WD vehicles differ from conventional
passenger cars. They have a higher centre of
gravity and are more likely to roll over. Take extra
care when driving these vehicles, particularly
on unsealed roads. Ensure you know how to
use the vehicle if you become bogged and
how to engage and disengage the four-wheel
drive system, including free-wheeling hubs.
Importantly, do not overload the roof-racks
with luggage. If you are planning your first 4WD
trip, consider taking a 4WD course in your
own vehicle prior to leaving. Or take out the
work - and do a tour! Listings on page 86-87.
