A Levels and AS Levels
Most A level students aim for a place in higher education
but A levels are suitable for direct entry into many areas of
employment.
A levels develop and test knowledge and understanding of
a particular subject through examinations and, in many
cases, coursework, as well as developing analytical and
critical abilities. A level students also develop advanced
study skills and become adept in the use of information
and communication technology.
Most A levels consist of four modules, with the opportunity
to attain an AS level after one year. Students begin at least
three AS levels plus another course like General Studies, but
those with high GCSE grades should take a fourth AS. We
will give advice on appropriate combinations.
Applied GCE/BTEC National Courses
These courses focus on particular areas of work
(business, caring, science) and are designed to equip
students with the skills to follow a particular career.
Both BTEC National Certificates and Diplomas and
Applied GCE qualifications are well-established ways
of gaining entry to higher education.
Applied GCE qualifications are available in Health and
Social Care and Science and are equivalent to two
A levels.
BTEC Courses
These are characterised by an assignment-based
approach. As well as studying their subjects, students
develop skills in communication, problem solving, time
management, information technology, working with
others, design and creativity.
We offer BTEC National Certificates and Diplomas
(equivalent to two or three good A level grades),
BTEC First Diplomas (equivalent to four or five GCSE
Grades A*-C) and BTEC Introductory Diplomas. We also
offer CACHE courses in Child Care and Education at
advanced and intermediate levels.
English for Speakers of Other Languages
This is a full-time, one-year course. It helps students
improve their English and a range of other skills.
Students progress according to their ability.
GCSE Mathematics and English
These subjects are available, as appropriate, to students
who have just missed a grade C in Year 11. They can be
combined with other courses. Students who have not
obtained at least a D grade in Mathematics may take
the Access to GCSE course.
