Photography: AS and A2 Level
This is an art and design-based A level that specialises
in a range of lens-based media including: printing and
processing, black and white film, location work, studio
work, Photoshop, and digital media, installation and
creative experimental work.
Course details This course is practical and the first year
involves the production of two units including a range of
mini projects exploring portraiture, environmental issues,
urban landscape and a timed, controlled practical
examination. In the second year, you will specialise in
your chosen area of photography and write a supporting
essay, as well as a practical examination.
How is it assessed? Both AS and A2 courses are 100%
coursework (this includes the practical examination).
Course duration One year at AS level. One year at
A2 level.
What do I need to study this subject? GCSE grade
A*-C in Art and Design, and GCSE grade A*-C in English
Language are desirable. Candidates are asked to bring
a folder of photographs to interview.
Where can this lead me? You can progress onto a
Foundation Diploma course or a degree in a range of
art-based subjects, and careers in photography, including
photojournalism, studio photography and advertising
photography.
What are the enrichment opportunities? There are visits to
galleries, museums, degree shows, workshops, location
work in Central London and Brighton and opportunities
to meet and work with professional photographers.
Art and Design: BTEC First Diploma
This is a one-year course that prepares you for further
education in Art and Design or employment in a related
industry. BTEC First courses can be combined with GCSE
subjects such as Mathematics or English, if appropriate.
The course is equivalent to four GCSE grades A*-C.
Course details You will study units that include drawing
and painting, printmaking, graphics, fashion and textiles,
photography, visits to galleries and museums, work-related
activities, working with technology and 3D design.
How is it assessed? This course is assessed by a range of
methods including projects, assignments, case studies and
coursework.
Course duration One year full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have
GCSE grade A*-C in Art and Design, A*-E in English
Language and A*-E in Mathematics.
Where can this lead me? You can progress onto either the
BTEC National (you require a Merit or Distinction at BTEC
First) or A levels. There are a range of careers available,
including: advertising, fashion/textile design, interior design,
illustration, product design, photography and digital
imaging, marketing/PR and multimedia/web design.

BTEC National Diploma
This is a two-year course that prepares you for higher
education in Art and Design or employment in a related
industry. A BTEC National Diploma course can be
combined with an AS/A2 level. It is equivalent to three
A levels.
Course details You will study units that include drawing
and painting, printmaking, graphics, fashion and textiles,
work-related activities, working with technology and
3D design.
How is it assessed? This course is assessed by a range of
methods including projects, assignments, case studies,
coursework and a final major project.
Course duration Two years full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have
five GCSE grades A*-C including Art and Design or a
Merit/Distinction in BTEC First Art and Design.
Where can this lead me? You can progress onto
Foundation Studies or directly onto a specialist degree
course. There are a range of careers available, including
advertising, fashion/textile design, film and TV (postproduction),
interior design, fine art (such as painting,
sculpture, print making), illustration, product design,
photography and digital imaging, marketing/PR and
multimedia/web design.
