it is just possible. But it always struck me as being the work of some<br />

one a century or two ago, who had tried his 'prentice hand at relief<br />

carving. I do not think it stands out more than an inch from the surface<br />

of the rock. It is fairly distinct, except about the point of the nose and<br />

the eyes, which are indicated only by lines. It has doubtless suffered<br />

541. OLD DESCRIPTION OF SCOTLAND. An interesting work has lately<br />

appeared styled Medieval Lore, being gleanings from the Encyclopedia of<br />

Bartholomew Anglicus, who was a Franciscan, and, as his name or rather<br />

designation shows, an Englishman. He wrote in Latin in the thirteenth<br />

century, probably before 1260. Before the close of the following century<br />

his work was translated in<strong>to</strong> French, Spanish, Dutch, and English. After<br />

the invention of printing seventeen editions in various languages were<br />

published in the fifteenth century. The spread of commerce, and the<br />

consequent more accurate knowledge of the world and its contents, proved<br />

a death-blow <strong>to</strong> the popularity of the work, which is now interesting as<br />

showing the limited acquaintance even a learned, intelligent, and honest<br />

man could have of things not immediately under his own notice. His
