CCXLT. MAITLAND OF SOLTRA. In answer <strong>to</strong> Mr. J. T. Maitland's<br />
queries I send the following notes on this family :<br />
I. Robert Maitland, Deputy-Governor<br />
Bass under the Duke of Lauderdale, 1<br />
and Lieutenant of the<br />
registered arms 24th<br />
September 1673, died before 1682, and married a sister and<br />
co-heir of John S<strong>to</strong>dhart of Camies<strong>to</strong>un, and had issue<br />
1. Charles, Lieutenant-Governor of the Bass in 1683, and in<br />
the last muster-roll of the garrison previous <strong>to</strong> Revolution<br />
(i6th Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1688) is still so; was one of those who<br />
held the Bass for King James vir. He married Margaret<br />
Swan, probably a daughter of George Swan, mastergunner<br />
of the Bass, and had issue a son Charles, born<br />
iQth September 1692.<br />
2. James, Captain in Scots Guards, afterwards Colonel of<br />
a regiment in the service of Holland (now the 25th<br />
King's Own Borderers), and Lieutenant-General and<br />
Governor of Fort-William, registered arms as son of<br />
Robert of the Bass, had a charter under the Great Seal<br />
of the lands of Pogbie in Hadding<strong>to</strong>nshire, 22nd June<br />
1713, died before 7th December 1716, when his will<br />
recorded married Theodosia ;<br />
Home, who had a charter<br />
of resignation under the Great Seal, conjunctly with<br />
Charles Maitland of Soltra, of the lands of Pogbie, on<br />
22nd June 1719, and died at Inveresk i3th December<br />
1732, apparently without issue, as Alexander Home,<br />
Town Clerk of Leith, was her universal legatee.<br />
3. David. (See No. II.)<br />
4. Robert, in Scots Guards, father of Elizabeth, who was<br />
served heir <strong>to</strong> her uncle James on i5th September 1732.<br />
II. David Maitland of Soltra, M.P. Lauder 1689-1702, Com-<br />
missioner of Supply for Hadding<strong>to</strong>nshire 1695 and 1704, married,<br />
5th February 1687, Agnes, daughter of David Pringle of Soltra,<br />
and had issue<br />
1. Charles. (See below, No. III.)<br />
2. Robert, born 24th April 1689.<br />
3. John, born i5th June 1690.<br />
4. James, born 2 2nd May 1691.<br />
5. David, bom nth Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1692.<br />
6. Alexander, silk mercer in High Street, Edinburgh, Captain<br />
of the City Guard, born i2th April 1694, died at Abbeyhill<br />
1 6th June 1749, married, i9th June 1728, Katherine,<br />
daughter of Craufurd Allan<strong>to</strong>n (she was alive in 1787),<br />
and had issue<br />
