Definition<br />

Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. This<br />

leads to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis the bone mineral density (BMD)<br />

is reduced, bone micro architecture starts deteriorating, and the amount and variety of<br />

proteins in bone gets altered.<br />

Causes<br />

Risk factors<br />

• Nutritional deficiency (calcium, vitamin D, protein)<br />

• Postmenopausal women (most common)<br />

• Hypothalamic amenorrhoea (athletes, anorexia nervosa)<br />

• Cigarette smoking<br />

• Excessive alcohol intake<br />

• Certain drugs like – Corticosteroids, Anticonvulsants, Heparin, etc.<br />

• Renal disease<br />

• Immobilisation<br />

• Lack of exercise<br />

• Malabsorption syndrome<br />

• Hepatic disease<br />

• Gastric or intestinal resection<br />

• Senile<br />

Preventive Measures<br />

• Avoid risk factors for osteoporosis<br />

• Adequate calcium intake during adolescence has shown to reduce the risk of<br />

osteoporosis in old age<br />

Health Promoting Tips<br />

• Calcium supplementation is recommended<br />

• Sun rays exposure to make up for Vitamin D deficiency<br />

• Risk factors for osteoporosis such as smoking and steroids should be eliminated<br />

• Walking and light exercises<br />

• Avoid having coffee
