This study of Richardson's The Prodigal is com-<br />

posed of six chapters. The Introduction offers the<br />

essential biographical elements and commentaries about<br />

the author's life and works. It also includes the gen-<br />

eral lines which will guide the analysis of the play<br />

including comments about the author's theory of his-<br />

torical evolution, the reasons for a comparative study<br />

with Aeschylus' Oresteia, the hypothesis, objetives<br />

and the comparative metho<strong>do</strong>logy which will be applied<br />

in this research.<br />

In the second chapter, The Prodigal will be<br />

located within the Greek cosmovision according to the<br />

elements which are preserved and/or modified by the<br />

author in the modern play. The plot, the theme and the<br />

temporal and spatial structures of The Prodigal will<br />

be developed and analysed with some important refer-<br />

ences to Aeschylus' Oresteia.<br />

The third chapter will consist of general com-<br />

mentaries about the characters of the play but with a<br />

special analysis of Agamemnon, Aegisthus and Orestes,<br />

the representatives of the political orders in his-<br />

torical evolution. Electra, who represents the voice<br />

of the majority and Cassandra who has the power to<br />

foresee future events, also represent important points<br />

of reference.<br />

In the fourth chapter, the most important events<br />
