tells his friend Pylades that Aegisthus has decided to<br />

send him on a long voyage to deepen his mind and<br />

broaden his point of view. Aegisthus ordered this trip<br />

as a punishment for Orestes' poor and impertinent be-<br />

havior during the official sacrifice. Pylades is sup-<br />

posed to go with the prince. Cassandra argues with 0-<br />

restes asking him if he is really anxious about leaving<br />

Argos when he is conscious of Aegisthus 1 real reasons<br />

for sending him away. The true reason for this exile<br />

is to maintain Orestes far from Argos because the<br />

prince represents a great danger to everything Aegis-<br />

thus has built. Aegisthus suspects Orestes' indiffer-<br />

ence and is afraid that Orestes will continue Agamem-<br />

non's policy. But, Orestes still maintains his posi-<br />

tion of non-involvement and answers: ...I'm aware of<br />

the grand -issues I leave behind me but that's exactly<br />

where I want them to be. (P 66)<br />

Aeschylus' Orestes is also sent into exile, but<br />

while still a child, because the usurpers fear his<br />

presence. However, there is a great difference between<br />

Aeschylus' and Richardson's versions: in Oresteia 0-<br />

restes is condemned to be an exile, while Richardson's<br />

Orestes ...wants to be one, emotionally, socially and<br />

geographically... 3 .<br />
