The Classical Greek Universe is an inexhaust-<br />
ible poetic source. Various modern authors rework Greek<br />
culture, as it was mentioned, into a new poetic form<br />
which draws upon the primitive vigour to produce re-<br />
sults of an amazing poetic splen<strong>do</strong>ur. This is the case<br />
with Richardson's The Prodigal.<br />
2.2. THEMATIC STRUCTURE OF THE PRODIGAL<br />
This present chapter describes the thematic<br />
structure of The Prodigal, with some added commen-<br />
taries about the characters and their ideological po-<br />
sitions. But, in this initial evaluation, the rela-<br />
tions between all these elements will not be estab-<br />
lished. The retelling of the events which form the<br />
action of The Prodigal provides the reader with suffi-<br />
cient background to understand the general political,<br />
psychological and social circumstances of the play.<br />
Some references to the ancient Oresteia tragedy will<br />
be included when they are relevant.<br />
The Classical Tragedy Oresteia is a sequence of<br />
three plays which share an absolute and indispensable<br />
dependence on an internal continuity. The ancient tril-<br />
ogy is composed of Agamemnon, The Choephori and The<br />
