It boasts a Who’s Who of great Mozarteans from the late-1950s/early 1960s, including Irmgard Seefried, Maria Stader and Hertha Töpper, with, of course, the magnificent Fischer-Dieskau in incomparable form as the Count Almaviva. Boasting a cast of great singers at the Austrian and German opera houses, this recording includes the much-loved Sena Jurinac. “Sena Jurinac gives a deeply affecting performance in the Prison Scene … Jan Peerce was an unexpected but good choice for the hero. Solti’s second recording of Verdi’s Falstaff returns here to the catalogue. Recorded ‘live’ at the Philharmonie in Berlin, it boasts a thoroughly imaginative cast and magnificent recorded sound. Despite the fact that he was born and educated in The Hague, his music has little in common with the ‘Haagse School’ and its minimalist roots, even though repetition does play a role in his opera Legende. The opera is based on the (in)famous 19th century comic book “Histoire de M. Vieux Bois” which are known in English as “The adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck” written and drawn by the Swiss author Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846). He intertwined comic stories about a lepidopterist (a man that catches and studies butterflies) with stories that are very serious, tragical and at times mystical. This recording features De Nederlandse Opera, the Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and is conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw. It is a mid priced 2 CD set.
