Solo Instrumental
This album comprises all works for piano solo composed by Gordon Getty between the nineteen sixties and
today. This is what the composer wrote about them in the liner notes: “The five called Homework Suite date from
my year at San Francisco Conservatory of Music (1962). Andantino and Scherzo Pensiersoso were written this year.
It might as easily been the other way around. Fifty years ago, I could steal unconsciously from others and now more from
myself, but the language and perspective are the same”.
GENRE Solo Instrumental
A music lover who goes to a concert or listens to a recording always expects something human, from the composer
as from the artist that relates to him personally, moves him or is even similar to him. Not least, the listener wishes to
find himself/herself in the work and in the sounds. Evgeni Koroliov makes this easy for the listener. As a matter of
course, he takes one by the hand and shows something familiar - so much that one already knew but just could not
express in words or tones. He speaks in a way that makes one believe one is listening to a relative.
Orchestral
The long-time dictator of the Boston Symphony appeared at Carnegie hall in early 1942 in a series of historic concerts that breathed new
life into the moribund New York Philharmonic. TIME Magazine had nicknamed them “The Dead End Kids”, and Koussevitzky had just two
weeks to whip this recalcitrant band of notorious musical delinquents into shape. The orchestra had flourished under Toscanini, but
Barbirolli allowed performance standards to slip precipitously, and quite a few of the younger members had been called up for military
service and were replaced by new players. This new release documents this difficult period in the New York Phil’s history.
