I shall go in<strong>to</strong> each of <strong>the</strong>ir houses, <strong>and</strong><br />
see that <strong>the</strong>y have been swept out <strong>and</strong><br />
cleaned. I shall examine <strong>the</strong> blankets,<br />
&c., <strong>and</strong> see that <strong>the</strong>y have been well<br />
aired; that everything has been attended<br />
<strong>to</strong> which conduces <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir comfort <strong>and</strong><br />
happiness.<br />
6 Horses.— I shall consider it my busi<br />
ness <strong>to</strong> see that <strong>the</strong> horses are properly<br />
fed <strong>and</strong> rubbed ; <strong>the</strong>ir stable is well liter-<br />
ed. When harnessed <strong>and</strong> at work. I shall<br />
see that <strong>the</strong>ir harness fits, <strong>and</strong> does not<br />
gall <strong>the</strong>m, recollecting that <strong>the</strong>se animals,<br />
though dumb, can feel as well as myself.<br />
7. Cattle.—I shall daily see that <strong>the</strong><br />
cattle have been penned, that <strong>the</strong>y have<br />
good water <strong>to</strong> drink ; <strong>and</strong> I shall at once<br />
see how 1 can best procure a ])asture for<br />
<strong>the</strong>m. I shall let <strong>the</strong> cattle minder know<br />
that he is watched <strong>and</strong> held responsible<br />
for <strong>the</strong>se things.<br />
8. Milch Cows.— I shall contrive <strong>to</strong><br />
procure <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong> best pastures, if possible.<br />
I shall feed <strong>the</strong>m night <strong>and</strong> morning,<br />
<strong>and</strong> shall so manage it as always <strong>to</strong> have<br />
something for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> eat when penned.<br />
d. Houses, Fences, Sfc.— i shall endeavor<br />
never <strong>to</strong> let <strong>the</strong>se get out of order.<br />
The moment I discover any of <strong>the</strong>m out<br />
of repair, I shall have <strong>the</strong>m attended <strong>to</strong>,<br />
never forgetting that " a stitch in time<br />
saves nine."<br />
10. Carts, Wagons. S^c.—I shall observe<br />
<strong>the</strong> same rules about <strong>the</strong>se as about <strong>the</strong><br />
horses, &c., <strong>and</strong> shall never put off attending<br />
<strong>the</strong>m until I may want <strong>to</strong> use <strong>the</strong>m,<br />
when I shall not have time <strong>to</strong> do so.<br />
11. Time.—I \vill always recollect that<br />
my time is not my own, but my employer's,<br />
<strong>and</strong> I shall consider my neglect of<br />
his business, as so much unjustly taken<br />
out of his pocket.<br />
12. Visits.—If any one calls <strong>to</strong> see me<br />
I shall entertain him politely ; but I shall<br />
never forget <strong>to</strong> attend <strong>to</strong> business on that<br />
account. '• Business first, <strong>and</strong> amusements<br />
afterwards" shall be my mot<strong>to</strong>. If<br />
any of my friends are displeased at this<br />
rule, <strong>the</strong> sooner <strong>the</strong>y cease <strong>to</strong> be friends<br />

this peculiarity may be traced from <strong>the</strong> extreme<br />
of capital punishment, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> minor<br />
penalties of social insubordination. The<br />
government has thought proper <strong>to</strong> do away<br />
with flogging in <strong>the</strong> Navy, States have<br />
ab<strong>and</strong>oned <strong>the</strong> same in <strong>the</strong> penitentiaries<br />
<strong>and</strong> common prisons, <strong>and</strong> down has <strong>the</strong><br />
reibrm come, until even <strong>the</strong> sage counsels<br />
of Solomon have been dis])uted, <strong>and</strong> "<strong>the</strong><br />
spare rod <strong>and</strong> spoil <strong>the</strong> child" system of<br />
social management, has given way <strong>to</strong> ap-<br />
peal, <strong>to</strong> moral sense <strong>and</strong> considerate reason.<br />
