9.1 Optical Activity<br />
Molecules that are tetrahedrally bonded can exhibit a property<br />
called optical activity.<br />
Optical activity means a molecule can rotate the plane of<br />
polarized light.<br />
Molecules that are optically active will rotate the polarized<br />
light clockwise or counter-clockwise depending if it is left<br />
handed or right handed.<br />
An optically active organic molecule has a carbon atom with<br />
four different molecules attached to it - a chiral carbon.<br />
