General Facts About AEDs<br />

• Good oral absorption and bioavailability<br />

• Most metabolized in liver but some excreted<br />

unchanged in kidneys<br />

• Classic AEDs generally have more severe CNS<br />

sedation than newer drugs (except<br />

ethosuximide)<br />

• Because <strong>of</strong> overlapping mechanisms <strong>of</strong> action,<br />

best drug can be chosen based on minimizing<br />

side effects in addition to efficacy
