THE fish friers REVIEW Why change? The contract with Peninsula was due to end on 1st August 2012 and although their service was adequate for the majority of our members, as with everything we wanted to consider all the options available to make sure that we were getting the most appropriate and beneficial service we could finance for our members. The tax advice element of the original service through Peninsula had been discontinued on the latest contract renewal in 2009, mainly due to the low levels of usage by the membership at that time. Any requests for this type of service have been fulfilled since using alternative providers and the decision was made to reintroduce this element if at all possible in any new contract, as we anticipate an increase in demand for this service. Initially, around ten firms including Peninsula submitted proposals to tender for the provision of the service to NFFF members, eight of which were invited to head office to meet with the General Secretary. These were shortlisted to five which were then invited back to give a second presentation to the three Officials Gregg Howard, Mark Drummond and Andrew Crook so that a final decision could be made. Many factors had to be considered during this lengthy process which took a few months to complete, and the final decision on which provider was to deliver and administer the new Lighthouse Business Protection service was unanimous. Who provides the service? Lighthouse Business Protection has been arranged through SME Insurance Services and is administered by ARAG Legal Services. ARAG is the largest family owned provider of legal insurance in the UK and a leading provider of legal expenses insurance. They offer a suite of products to provide protection from a range of business related legal issues and to respond to a range of legal disputes that can arise from day-to-day business activities. These products are only available through selected insurance brokers and business partners. SME Insurance Services are Associate members of the NFFF and already offer insurance products to fish and chip shops through their Take Out insurance arm. It is through our relationship with SME Insurance Services and ARAG Legal Services that we are able to make this suite of services available to our members. 18 Lighthouse Business Protection – lighting the way to protect your business We are delighted to be able to announce the introduction of an exciting new membership benefit, Lighthouse Business Protection, which is available to NFFF members from 1st August 2012. This new service replaces the previous scheme which has been delivered by Peninsula Business Services for several years. What does Lighthouse Business Protection do for fish and chip shops? The NFFF prides itself on being able to help and advise its members on any aspect of running a successful fish and chip business. But our staff and Executive Councillors are not experts in employment, health and safety and legal issues, so to ensure that our members are given the correct advice and path to follow, plus some insurance protection should it all go wrong, we have to secure some outside help from the professionals to cover these aspects for us. If you have any questions regarding employment law, health and safety, other legal issues or you need tax advice, Lighthouse Business Protection should be your first port of call at the first sign of trouble. Don’t leave it until after you’ve sacked the member of staff you’ve had issues with, ring before you take action, otherwise you may find that you are not protected by the indemnity insurance. There’s even a counselling helpline included in this package, so if you have a member of staff who has some personal issues which are affecting their attendance or concentration, or they have issues they want to talk through with somebody neutral, give them access to the counselling helpline to give them the professional help they need. Lighthouse Business Protection also includes an online document service where risk assessments and employment contracts can be created and downloaded specific to each member’s business requirements. Over 80 documents are available covering employment, health and safety and many other commercial legal issues affecting everyday business. You’ll need a code to be able to access this service which is only available to NFFF members through head office. All of these services are only available to NFFF members, so be prepared to answer a few security questions including your membership number when you ring. We are confident that you will find this new service to be of great benefit to your business, but we can only measure its success by hearing from you. It is a completely confidential service and we don’t need to know details, just letting us know how easy you found it to get through and how satisfied you were with any advice you’ve been given would be a great help to us.
