Direct Drive Fan Selection Procedure
10
Most direct drive applications will have multiple fan size and RPM selections which will satisfy the design requirements.
Selections can be narrowed further by RPM or horsepower restrictions, sound criteria or space restrictions.
The direct drive performance graphs contain fan wheel sizes ranging from 30 to 73 inch diameters and RPMs ranging
from 870 to 1770. All fan sizes and RPMs have fan performance curves in 5 percent increments from a full width wheel
down to a 50% wheel width. Both static pressure vs. CFM (shown as solid lines) and brake horsepower vs. CFM (dashed
lines) are depicted.
Inlet and outlet sound power is shown for all fan sizes and RPMs. Tables of sound power for direct drive fans are found starting
on page 32. Sound power for each selection can be determined by matching fan RPM with the system static pressure.
See page 36 for complete model number code.
Direct Drive Fan Selection Example
Enter the performance graph with the desired CFM and Ps. Obtain the percentage wheel width and brake horsepower
requirements.
For this example, select 40,000 CFM at 6 inches static pressure which is shown as 'A'. The static vs CFM curve (solid
line) that satisfies this point of operation has a wheel width of 85%. To determine the brake horsepower, find the
intersection of the brake horsepower vs. CFM curve (dashed line) for a 85% wheel at 40000 CFM (point 'B'). Read the
brake horsepower value from the right side of the table. For this selection, the brake horsepower is approximately 66. A
75 horsepower motor or larger is required. See pages 3 and 4 to find motor frame sizes and check minimum
and maximum motor frame size for Arr. 4 and 8.
Determining Inlet and
Outlet Sound
Enter the fan sound table with
the Fan RPM and static
pressure. For this example,
the eight octave ratings are
circled in the table below.
Tables for direct drive sound
power levels are found
starting on page 32.
Note: If the static pressure is
not indicated in the chart, the
eight octave ratings can be
interpolated.
