Blocking<br />

• Blocking is a technique for dealing with nuisance factors<br />

• A nuisance factor is a factor that probably has some effect <strong>on</strong> the<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>se, but it’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> no interest to the experimenter…however, the<br />

variability it transmits to the resp<strong>on</strong>se needs to be c<strong>on</strong>trolled or<br />

minimized<br />

• Typical nuisance factors include batches <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> raw material, operators,<br />

pieces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> test equipment, time (shifts, days, etc.), different<br />

experimental units<br />

• Many industrial experiments involve blocking (or should)<br />

• Failure to block is a comm<strong>on</strong> flaw in designing an experiment<br />

(c<strong>on</strong>sequences?)
