Migrating to z/OS R8 Part 1 of 3: Get Ready
Some IBM SW Target System Requirements for z/OS R8
product name minimum supported level
CICS TS V2 R2
(V1 R3 was end of Service: 4/30/06)
for zAAP exploitation, minimum level is V2 R3.
DB2 V7 R1 with PTFs
for determining zAAP execution potential and exploitation,
minimum level is V7 R1
for zIIP exploitation, minumum level is V8 plus PTFs
IMS V8 R1 with PTFs
(V7 R1 was end of Service: 11/8/05)
for determining zAAP execution potential and exploitation,
minimum level was V7 R1
WebSphere
Application
Server
V5 R1
(V5 R0 was end of service 9/30/06)
for determining zAAP execution potential, can use V5.02
for zAAP exploitation, minimum level is V5 R1.
zAAP exploitation requires at least z/OS R6 and the IBM Solution Developers Kit (SDK) for z/OS, Java 2 Technology
Edition, V1.4 with PTF (or later) for APAR PQ86689
zIIP requires the z/OS R6 or R7 zIIP Web deliverable, or z/OS R8. See zIIP functional PSP bucket.
Selected IBM Subsystem Products that will run on z/OS R8 (and levels for zAAP and zIIP)
For a complete list of the minimum release of IBM software products that run on z/OS R8, refer to Appendix C of z/OS
and z/OS.e Planning for Installation.
zAAP
If you are interested in exploiting (or doing capacity planning for) zAAPs, then there are minimum software levels
required. In order to exploit a zAAP, the operating system must be migrated to at least z/OS 1.6 (or z/OS.e 1.6), the IBM
Solution Developers Kit (SDK) for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 with PTF (or later) for APAR PQ86689 must be
used.
Here is a table outlining the subsystems and minimum Java levels dependencies for determining zAAP Java execution
and exploitation potential. The rows in blue identify some of the products levels that will exploit zAAPs. The rows in
yellow, while not able to exploit the benefits of zAAPs, show where the zAAP Projection Tool for Java 2 Technology
Edition, SDK1.3.1 can be used to assist in zAAP capacity planning. For instance, WebSphere V5.0.2 cannot exploit
zAAP, however the zAAP Projection Tool can be used to determine zAAP Java execution potential if the WebSphere
workloads were migrated to the required level for zAAP exploitation.
zIIP
For z/OS V1.6 or z/OS V1.7: If you will exploit the IBM System z9 Integrated Information Processor (zIIP), you will require
the "IBM System z9 Integrated Information Processor Support for z/OS and z/OS.e V1R6/R7" Web deliverable plus PTFs
(planned to be available June 30, 2006). This Web deliverable contains FMID JBB77S9 for z/OS V1.6, and FMID
JBB772S for z/OS V1.7. Install the service identified in the program directory that comes with this Web deliverable and
the service which is recommended in the appropriate zOSV1Rn BCPZIIP PSP bucket. IBM DB2 UDB for z/OS V8 with
PTFs, is also required for exploitation for portions of eligible workloads. For z/OS V1.8, this Web deliverable is not
needed, as zIIP support is incorporated.
