and Creech are the recipients of Air Combat
Command’s Commander in Chief Installation
Excellence Award and have earned $100,000
for base quality of life improvements.
“Our Airmen do an outstanding job at
two of the busiest bases in the U.S. and they
deserve this recognition,” said Colonel David
Belote, 99th Air Base Wing commander
Nellis and Creech competed against every
ACC base on seven criteria ranging from enhanced
productivity of work force to energy
conservation and encouragement of bottomto-top
communication.
The multitude of awards Nellis and Creech
teams received during the past year seemed to
help secure Nellis’ victory. On the final panel,
in which four ACC semifinalists competed,
all but one judge gave Nellis and Creech first
place, reported an ACC representative.
Ease stress of holiday travel with space-A
By Airman 1st Class Jonathan Cantrell
99th Logistics Readiness Squadron
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.
— The underlying theme of this year has
been the economy as rising and lowering
of gas prices, food and the unpredictable
stock markets have left many families
struggling to break even. Unfortunately,
are one Chief of Staff of the Air Force Award,
12 Air Force and more than 57 ACC awards,
to include ACC Lemay, Innkeeper, and Daedalian
Awards. The package also highlighted
such projects as a $5 million taxiway repair, $4
million dorm renovations, and the base fitness
center being rated a five-star facility.
“The bases seem to have momentum for
continuous improvement,” said Senior Master
Sgt. Kelly Keebler, 99th Logistics Readiness
Squadron vehicle management superintendant,
who was in charge of putting the award
package together. “It keeps getting better.
Winning is definitely a great reflection on
the efforts of everyone at Creech and Nellis.”
The base will now compete for the title of
Best In the Air Force. By Dec. 10, two semifinalists
will be announced. Between Jan. 25
and Feb. 7 base visits will be conducted, and
the award ceremony is slated to take place
May 5. The winner and the runner-up will
receive $1 million and $500,000 accordingly
for quality of life improvements.
the prices of airline tickets are on the rise
as well. For a flight during thanksgiving
week, the price of airline tickets through
a commercial grade company from
McCarran Intelligence to Baltimore,
for a family with two children can cost
anywhere from $900 on up. That doesn’t
even include the $98 fee for long term
parking of your vehicle. The cost can be
overwhelming. Don’t worry, the Nellis
Air Terminal can help.
The U.S. military has combated this
very issue with the Space Available Passenger
Program. It allows eligible passengers
to fly anywhere in the continental
United States and overseas for little to no
cost on a space available basis. Sign-up is
as simple as an e-mail or just a walk-in
benefit is available to eligible retirees,
guard and reserve personnel, and active
The process of flying on a Space Available
Flight or Space-A is very simple. You
just need to plan your trip, be flexible,
A Wingman program:
Families with special needs children
A1C Joseph Dixon
99th Medical Group
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.—As
proud members of the United States Air
Force, we are tasked with protecting our
country, providing aid for nations around
the world, and ridding the world of terrorism.
We set aside the pressures of our own
lives to do our duty as Airmen. But even
the most dedicated need a helping hand
from time to time. This is why the Wingman
concept was instituted: to assure us
that our military family will be there when
we need them the most.
It’s this mentality that led Staff Sgt.
Allison Jarrett and Tech. Sgt. Lisa Griffin
to found the Families with Special Needs
Children Support Group (FSNC) in mid
July of this year. All Air Force families
make sacrifices to ensure Airmen receive
support, but families with special needs
children face additional challenges. Staff
Sgt. Jarrett remembers finding out that she
was the parent of a special needs child and
the new demands this brought to her family.
“Two years ago, when my oldest child
was diagnosed with autism, I was left with
a lot of questions, but very few answers.
It was the help of those around me, going
through similar situations that helped
me cope with the struggles of having an
autistic child,” Jarrett explained. “As the
years passed, I realized how invaluable
that support was for me, and I wanted to
be able to pass on my experiences to others.
Hoping to ease some of their fears and
help them to put the mission first.” This
desire to help others led to the FSNC.
The FSNC helps ease stress as much as
possible by making support available from
day one. Tech. Sgt Lisa Griffin explains,
“We are currently in discussions with the
facilitators of Right Start. We want those
arriving at Nellis that might see the FSNC
as a useful tool to start using it right away.
We hope they can attend the meetings,
meet some new friends and of course,
find the help that might not have existed
at their previous base.”
The main goal of the FSNC is to
provide a wealth of information at each
meeting. Whether it’s online, through
periodicals, books, or personal advice,
families can find the information they
need without doing all the leg work.
The Bullseye is published by Aerotech News and Review, a private
firm in no way connected with the U.S. Air Force, under exclusive written
contract with Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Contents of the Bullseye are not
or any other non-merit factor of the purchaser, user or patron.
The deadline for submissions to the Bullseye is no later than
Wednesday, 4:30 p.m., one week prior to desired publication date.
Jarrett explained that with many new
parents raising a disabled child have no
idea where to look for information, and
that is where the FSNC comes in. “We
try to cover a wide range of topics,” said
Jarrett, “School, healthcare coverage, SSI
benefits, and any other issue that comes
up. Most importantly, we provide a place
for parents to vent. We let them know
that they don’t have to take on these
challenges all by themselves.”
One of the more important future goals
of the FSNC is creating a better line of
communication for parents dealing with
the Clark County School District. “This
seems to be one of the largest concerns for
parents attending our meetings,” explains
Griffin. “Whether it’s teachers not being
properly trained to deal with their children
or parents feeling ignored by school
administrators, it’s easy to feel like you’re
getting the run around.” To help with
these issues, the FSNC has helped place a
liaison for the CCSD at the Airmen and
Family Readiness Center. A trained individual
is there to listen and help parents
trying to find answers that might have
been out of reach elsewhere.
Briefs are due no later than Wednesday, 3 p.m. one week prior to
desired publication date. Articles must also be submitted no later
than Wednesday, 4:30 p.m., one week prior to desired publication
date unless the editor provides an exception to a late-breaking
story or article, and articles must include a byline (author of the
story).
For all submissions, a name and phone number of a person to
contact must be included in the event questions arise.
All material is edited for accuracy, brevity, clarity and conformity to
the Associated Style Guide, to include military ranks and proper writing
etiquette.
The community of support built in the
FSNC has caused it to grow since its inception
to include not only the parents of
Autistic children, but other special needs
children as well.
“Even though my experiences are
mostly related to autism, I really wanted
to open our meetings to help any family
raising a disabled child, no matter the circumstances,”
Staff Sgt. Jarrett said. In its
first few months, the group’s regular attendance
has seen a steady increase from just
a few in July to more than 10 at the most
recent meeting in October. “I am thrilled
to see that people are taking advantage of
this group, and as long as there are people
out there looking for help. We’ll be here
to give it,” said the sergeant.
The Families with Special Needs
Children Support Group meets the third
Wednesday of each month from 1130-
1230 at the Airmen and Family Readiness
Center. Staff Sgt. Jarrett and Tech. Sgt.
Griffith invite anyone interested to stop by
for the meeting. For more information on
The Great American Smokeout… did you participate?
FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AFNS) -- Officials
in both the Department of Defense
and Tricare encouraged military service
members and their families to take part in
the annual Great American Smokeout on
Nov. 20. The Smokeout was established to
use as a launching point to become tobacco
free and begin a healthier lifestyle.
Participation in the Smokeout is an
important component of the DOD-sponsored
educational campaign, Quit Tobacco—Make
Everyone Proud. Its mission
is to assist active-duty service members in
their efforts to quit tobacco, for themselves
and for the people who look up to them and
care about them.
“The uniform is a symbol of strength and
pride, and that’s what it takes to give up tobacco,”
said Capt. David Arday, MD, MPH,
a U.S. Public Health Service officer, who is
chairman of DOD’s Alcohol and Tobacco
Advisory Committee. “We urge military
men and women to take up the challenge of
the Smokeout. There are resources available
to help you.”
Despite decades of work focused on
reducing the use of tobacco by military
populations, it remains firmly entrenched,
especially in the youngest segment of the
military population, with new smokers
and smokeless tobacco users starting every
day.
In 2005, the prevalence of smoking
among 18 to 25 year olds on active duty
was significantly higher than among their
civilian counterparts — 42.4 percent vs. 37.6
percent of men, 29.2 percent vs. 25.8 percent
of women. Nearly 23 percent of those men
started smoking after joining the military.
The use of smokeless or “spit tobacco” is also
relatively high among military men in this
age group, at roughly 25 percent.
“Join millions of members of the uniformed
services, their families and the
American public who quit smoking for one
day,” said Rear Admiral Steven Galson, MD,
MPH, acting U.S. Surgeon General.
During November, military personnel,
their families and others who support them
are invited to visit the campaign Web site.
This interactive information and support
tool is specifically aimed at enlisted active
duty personnel who want to become tobacco
free. Here they can access live instant-message
help from a trained cessation coach,
privately and anonymously.
Users also can customize and download
a quit plan; find research-based information;
learn strategies for coping with triggers; play
games with embedded tips and motivational
messages; discuss issues on the message
board; listen to podcasts; and locate local
cessation programs.
Those who want to help their military
friends and colleagues give up tobacco can
send an e-card, become more informed
about the challenges tobacco users face as
they try to stop smoking and chewing, and
download information to share.
patient and have a little bit of money reserved for emergency
situations. A key thing to remember about the program is in
most cases, the military sponsor must accompany their dependents
to utilize this program. One of the most important steps
in this program is signing-up or registration. If signing up via
e-mail request, please send to: SPACE-A.SIGNUP@NELLIS.
AF.MIL with the sponsor’s name, social security number, branch
of service, flight category, number of seats requested and social
security numbers of any dependents flying with you. If signing
up in person, any passenger can visit the Air Terminal located in
Building 809 right next to Base Operations normal duty hours
are from 7a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Customers can also utilize the
passenger self service center to sign up and check available flights
at any time throughout the day. When asked what he thought of
the Space-A Passenger Program, Master Sgt Rodolfo Palacios of
the 99th Aerospace Medicine Squadron said, “The experience
was great. The process is very efficient and if the opportunity
arises I would definitely fly with Space-A again!”
All travelers who sign up for Space-A remain on the register
60 days after registration, or for the duration of their travel
orders authorization, leave duration or until they are selected
for travel, whichever occurs first. Passengers may stay informed
with outbound flights simply by calling the flight schedule recording
at (702) 652-6099, or by stopping by the air terminal
for an update. All military flights are subject to change without
notice, so be sure to check the flight forecast periodically.
John Quandt, an Air Force Retired Lt. Col. said, “I check
the Space-A outbound flight board often for flights to see
family through the Midwest. When planning trips I always
use the program as an inexpensive back-up plan to help plan
my travel”.
Were you aware that your family can fly in the Space-A program
while you are deployed? Everyone knows that the Air Force
mission must carry on throughout the year, but that doesn’t mean
your family has to stay home in your absence. All that’s necessary
is a letter from your Unit Commander listing your family
members and their dependent identification card, and they can
still benefit from the Space Available Program.
George Schultz, an Air Force retiree had this to say, “I’ve
been traveling on Space-A since the Vietnam Era, and I’ve
always found the system very convenient. I sometimes travel
using Space-A three or four times a year visiting family and
my favorite part of the program is the camaraderie between
service members who are utilizing this program. You never
know who you may meet and what experiences they’ve had”.
The Space-A program is a quick and easy, no cost alternative
to your normal travel woes. Passengers are handled with the care
and excellence they deserve without the hassle of lines and fees
commonly found at your local airport. By reducing the amount
of stress on holiday travel, the Space-A program is truly a great
example of the U.S. military supporting our community. Any
questions can be directed to the Nellis Air Terminal Building
809, or call (702) 652-2562 for more information.
MFLC Program now offered at Creech
By Staff Sgt. Alice Moore
432d Wing Public Affairs
CREECH AFB, Nev. – The Military and
Family Life Consultant Program is now being
offered at Creech AFB on Thursdays.
The non-medical counseling program
can help Airmen address a variety of issues
that may be associated with the military life,
said Susan Robinson, Nellis Airman and
Family Readiness Center director.
“As human beings, we all need help
sometimes, and we need the impartial view
of someone who has no personal stake in our
lives,” Ms. Robinson said. “Outsiders often
have a perspective that we need to hear.”
Services are free and confidential with
the exception of “duty to warn” issues such
as being a danger to oneself or others, domestic
violence and sexual assault. Airmen,
DoD civilians and contractors assigned to
Creech can see a consultant on Thursdays
here by calling to make an appointment. Clients
leave the program with a specific action
plan in relation to their problem and can be
seen by a consultant one to six times.
“Since they keep no records, people
who might be hesitant about going to an
agency might feel more comfortable seeing
a Military and Family Life Consultant,” Ms.
Robinson said.
Bringing MFLC to Creech is just anoth-
You got served . . .
By Senior Airman Oleksandra G. Manko
Nellis AFB Public Affairs
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. – The
Nellis food service team under the 99th Services
Squadron won the Air Combat Command
Hennessy award Nov. 4, claiming the
title of best food service in ACC. The team now
takes part in the Air Force level competition,
which will end early 2009.
The John L. Hennessy trophy is an annual
award that is presented to the best food service
operation in the United States Air Force.
The award is based on the entire scope of an
installation’s food service program, exhibiting
excellence in kitchen operations, serving and
dining operations, training, personnel and
readiness, sanitation, repair maintenance, and
management effectiveness.
“It’s about the Airmen,” said 1st Lt. Michael
Seebeck, 99th SVS food service officer. “They
are the bread and butter behind this award. It
can be a grind, as you work all hours and on
holidays. It’s what they do in the dining facili-
er example of how leadership is committed
to helping individuals assigned here.
“The services were brought up here to
make things easier for Creech personnel
to access it,” Ms. Robinson said. “Families
would probably be more likely to meet
with a consultant at Nellis or surrounding
areas, but military members, contractors
or DoD civilian employees who work at
Creech will benefit by having the service
right there.”
Military Family Life Consultants must
possess at least a master’s degree in a helping
area and a professional license to practice
in an area such as marriage and family
therapist, licensed clinical social worker,
or professional counselor. They must also
have experience working in the counseling
profession in the civilian community, Ms.
Robinson said.
Ms. Robinson said one thing to keep in
mind is that although most consultants are
qualified to provide therapy , the counselors
E-9 board president emphasizes record verification
By 2nd Lt. Gina Vaccaro
Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs
RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas
(AFNS)—The president of the 2008 chief
master sergeant evaluation board convened
Oct. 20 at the Air Force Personnel Center
here emphasized the importance of record
verification by each eligible individual prior
to the evaluation board convening.
Brig. Gen. Frederick H. “Rick” Martin,
the U.S. Africa Command Directorate of
Operations and Logistics deputy director,
served as the evaluation board president
and offered insight as to what it takes to
make E-9.
As board president, General Martin
oversaw the 24-member board, which was
made up of eight colonels and 16 chief mas-
ties, the mindset of the people.”
It is the first time since 1999 that Nellis food
service team got this far in the competition.
Lieutenant Seebeck said that avid support
from the leadership manifested in purchases
of new equipment, and a developed recognition
system had a strong motivating effect on
the Airmen.
Getting the ACC award is a great morale
booster as well, he said. “Airmen are motivated
to do a great job for the Air Force evaluation
– to be the best food service in the Air
Force.”
Counting the Mountain View dining facility,
open for holiday meals and big training
exercises on base, Nellis food services operate
four facilities.
Lieutenant Seebeck expressed gratitude
towards the Airmen for taking leadership’s
vision and working hard toward achieving
that goal.
“Now we have another step to work toward,
another goal,” he said. “We’ll do the best we
can to represent Nellis.”
ter sergeants who evaluated the records of
2,695 senior master sergeants.
“The chief master sergeant promotion selection
program has always been extremely
competitive. This cycle was no exception,”
General Martin said. “The E-9 end strength
is limited to 1 percent of the total enlisted
force. So, the competition for the limited
quotas is tough. This is why it is vital that all
members verify the accuracy of their records
ahead of time.”
Individual involvement from eligible
senior NCOs is crucial to the promotion
process. Senior NCOs should ensure their
senior NCO selection folders, maintained
at AFPC’s selection board secretariat, are
accurate and complete. The secretariat staff
recommends senior NCOs request copies
of their selection record prior to their
Air Force photo by Senior Airman Oleksandra Manko
Airman Tony Riddles, 99th Services Squadron food service specialist is delivering a
freshly made sandwich during lunch rush at the Crosswinds Dining Facility here Nov. 18.
The 99th SVS won the Air Combat Command Hennessy award and is now competing
on the Air Force level.
evaluation board to ensure all necessary
documents are filed and all information is
correct.
Senior NCOs should also consistently
review their data verification records for
accuracy and make sure any necessary
corrections are made prior to the evaluation
board. The data verification records for all
eligible individuals are located on the virtual
Military Personnel Flight through the Air
Force portal.
Instructions for how to review and access
records are posted on the enlisted promotions
Web site, http://ask.afpc.randolph.
af.mil. This review is an important tool
provided to senior NCOs to ensure the information
in the selection folder is correct.
With the E-9 board complete, the selection
board secretariat is reminding Airmen
to stay vigilant in maintaining their records.
Often times a senior NCO’s personal involvement
and due diligence are the key to
getting corrections made to a record prior
to an evaluation board.
While the board secretariat will give your
records a solid review; each eligible Airman
is responsible for ensuring his or her record
contains complete and accurate information.
The next board, the senior master
sergeant evaluation board, is scheduled to
convene Feb. 2, 2009.
If you have any questions regarding the
senior NCO promotion selection process,
contact the Air Force Personnel Center’s
24-hour Contact Center at 800-616-3775
or visit the “Ask AFPC” Web site at http://
ask.afpc.randolph.af.mil/ and search for
“promotion”.

Spouses of deployed Airmen
receive a ‘baby shower’
By Lila Edwards
Editor
NELLIS AIR FORCE
BASE, Nev.—For 12 spouses
of deployed Nellis Airmen,
Nov. 15 was like Christmas in
the Fall, as they were treated to
the first-ever ‘baby shower’ hosted
by the National Charity League
and the Nevada Soldier’s Angels, on Nellis.
Jody Shervanick, organizer for the event, and a
member of the Soldier’s Angels, said the organizers
had worked a long time gathering the 12 baskets
overflowing with baby items.
“We wanted to do something special this year for
some of our military’s spouses, and helping those
whose spouse is deployed seemed the best way to
do it,” she said.
Ms. Shervanick said the Soldier’s Angels are
about 2,000-strong in Clark County, and they’ve
been supporting the Nellis spouses for several years.
There are about 70,000 Soldier’s Angels U.S.-wide
who contribute donations to military families every
year.
The volunteers of the organization spent months
on their “Operation TopKnot” knitting newborn
items, gathering much-needed baby clothing and
other baby necessities in preparation for the event.
The spouses were treated to a lunch, bouquets of
flowers picked by their deployed husband through emails
and telephone calls, ensuring each spouse also
had a special card and comments on the flowers.
In attendance were two recently returning deployed
Airmen who assisted their spouses during
the course of the day, along with the Soldier’s Angels
mentors who were each assigned to a spouse during
the day. The mentors held newborns, assisted
with lunch, and cheered the group on as they played
games for special prizes and created memory-moments
for everyone involved.
Airmen respond to buried threat in Afghanis
By Staff Sgt. Samuel Morse
455th Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs
BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (AFNS)—When the Soviet
Union pulled out of Afghanistan, they left thousands of mines and
other explosive remnants of the war behind. At Bagram Airfield,
with constant civil engineering projects to expand the flightline
and other facilities, it’s a daily occurrence to find small explosives
in the soft sand.
During a normal mine clearing mission recently, Airmen discovered
an OFAB 100 Soviet bomb containing 92.5 pounds of high
explosives.
“It was kind of surprising there was that large of a bomb where it
was located,” said Master Sgt. Cayle Harris, the 755th Air Expeditionary
Group Explosive Ordnance Disposal team leader.
“(The bomb) had probably been there 25 to 30 years doing just fine
and there was a pretty good chance that it wasn’t going to explode just
because we found it,” said Capt. Michael Mayo, a 455th Expeditionary
Operations Support Squadron current operations officer.
Located next to the main taxiway for passenger and cargo aircraft,
the bomb posed a risk if left unchecked. Lt. Col. Kevin Virts and
Captain Mayo were brought in from the 455th EOSS to come up
with a plan to either remove the bomb, or render it safe.
“This is Afghanistan’s hub. Bagram is a very, very busy airfield.
Any time you shut down operations here, there’s a ripple effect all
around the country. You want to minimize the time we have to
shut down the airfield,” said Captain Mayo, a native of Tallahassee,
Fla.
Fortunately for Colonel Virts and Captain Mayo, there was a
scheduled runway closure.
“We had about five days to think about it before that opportunity
presented itself,” Captain Mayo said. “If we knew the airfield was
going to be down anyway, you’d get this done, and there would be
minimal effects to actual flying.”
Next, logistics had to be sorted out. The area at risk of
overpressure -- blast force strong enough to break glass
not just parts of the flightline and runway, but several
workplaces as well. Delicate weather sensors and radar s
to be taken under consideration as well.
“They actually had to move the (tactical air navigatio
something you don’t do,” Captain Mayo said.
The tactical air navigation is a system that tells a plan
in relation to the runway, assisting aircraft to fly, land a
even under poor visibility.
“A (tactical air navigation) gets (aircraft) close enoug
their final approach to an airfield,” said Matthew Axber
MetNav technician from Klamath Falls, Ore. “They ar
not moved due to the fact that a small shift of the ante
ground will create a much larger change the further yo
the beacon. One degree doesn’t sound like much but 4
it’s a large enough distance to potentially cause problem
Once moved, the tactical air navigation would have t
checked by a specialized aircraft to ensure proper place
“It just so happens that the plane that does that cam
day after), so they moved (the tactical air navigation) a
it right back,” Captain Mayo said.
After nearly a week of planning, the big day came.
were evacuated and the flightline was closed down. The
used a thermite grenade to destroy the bomb in place. In
super-hot thermite would burn the bomb gradually, al
gases to dissipate in a controlled manner rather than exp
with a bomb that old, anything could have happened.
In the end, everything went exactly as planned.
“In our line of business, it seems like something a
wrong,” Sergeant Harris said. “This is about as perfect a
tion can possibly go.”
Wounded Airman: ‘Absolute privilege to defend Amer
By Sean Bowlin
12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs
11/13/2008 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE
BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- A wounded NCO spoke
to 300 Airmen, retirees, Greater San Antonio
Chamber of Commerce officials and members
of the Alamo Chapter of the Air Force Association
Nov. 3 at the Randolph Air Force Base
Enlisted Club.
The AFA-sponsored “Combat Breakfast”
hosted Staff Sgt. Christopher Slaydon and
21 other wounded warriors recovering from
injuries at the Brooke Army Medical Center’s
Center for the Intrepid at Fort Sam Houston in
San Antonio.
The gathering was part of the national “Celebrate
America’s Military Week’’ that led into
Veterans Day.
Sergeant Slaydon, an explosive ordnance
disposal team member, lost his sight and his
left arm when wounded in October 2007 while
attempting to disarm an improvised explosive
device on a joint mission with the Army’s 10th
Mountain Division in Iraq.
“I’m not unique among the war’s wounded,”
Sergeant Slaydon said. “All the guys and gals
wounded think it’s an absolute privilege to
defend our country.”
The sergeant, who moved with his wife,
Annette, to temporary quarters at Randolph
AFB while rehabilitating at BAMC, had been
stationed with the 56th Civil Engineer Squadron
at Luke AFB, Ariz. Mrs. Slaydon was working
as a paralegal in nearby Phoenix at the time of
her husband’s injury.
Sergeant Slaydon, told the audience he spends
most of his time now helping other wounded
and injured patients at BAMC, while undergoing
his own therapy with his prosthetic arm.
Therapy is almost complete and he’ll be medically
retired soon at Luke AFB.
His next step is to march toward his ultimate
goal -- to attend college and earn a doctorate
in psychology. He plans on putting that degree
to use as a psychologist in the Department of
Veterans Affairs while counseling veterans with
post traumatic stress disorder.
Mrs. Slaydon said from the time she was
notified of her husband’s injuries barely more
than a year ago, the Air Force family has taken
care of her needs -- putting her up in temporary
housing in San Antonio and raising money to
pay bills because she had to stop working her
well-salaried job to aid her husband’s recovery.
Mrs. Slaydon also suggested some of the ways
the private sector could really support wounded
warriors rehabilitating in hospitals. They include
lowering mortgage interest rates, forgiving
some interest, tacking car payments due during
rehabilitation onto the end of existing auto loan
notes and thus deferring them, offering families
of the wounded credit and financial counseling.
She also suggested that the private sector could
offer discounted or free rental cars, housing adaptation
construction
(for the disabled), maid,
landscaping and home
repair services to the
rehabilitating wounded
and their families.
Mrs. Slaydon praised
local charitable organizations
who lent support
to her husband and
other wounded warriors
and their families
as they recovered.
“People should donate cash to th
organizations,” Mrs. Slaydon said
amazing things for people. I kno
for us.”
“It’s a way of showing our ap
for what the contributions of ou
are to our freedom,” said Gary
former Air Force combat helicop
pilot and president of the Alamo
the AFA. “It also celebrates the co
and willingness of Americans t
for their nation. Having guys lik
integration of the munition
with the A-10, allowing for
an outstanding precision
targeting capability that
will help Air Force aircrews
continue to provide
effective air support to
coalition ground troops.
40th Flight Test Squadron
at Eglin Air Force Base,
The “Hog” drops in on history
By Master Sgt. Joy Josephson
46th Test Wing
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla.
(AFNS)—The A-10 Thunderbolt II,
nicknamed the Warthog and known
for its close-air support superiority and
the ability to carry large and varied ordnance,
is now on its way to delivering a
new capability to the warfighter.
A pilot from the 40th Flight Test
Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.,
with support from people with the 46th
Test Wing, Boeing and a host of other
units, flew a quick yet historic mission
early in November. For the first time, a
guided bomb unit-54, the Laser Joint
Direct Attack Munition, or LJDAM,
was dropped from an A-10C.
“There is a strong need to destroy
moving targets in the AOR,” said Capt.
Kirt Cassell, the lead A-10C flight test
engineer. “The Laser JDAM has shown
to be very effective at destroying moving
targets on other (aircraft) and Air
Combat Command (officials) wanted
to bring that capability to the A-10C for
an upcoming deployment.”
Captain Cassell and team members
from the 40th FTS began planning this
test mission in early October. That’s a
short timeline for a test mission, according
to Captain Cassell. Plus, the
team was challenged with ensuring
the LJDAM worked correctly. To do
this, the plan was to drop the bomb on
a GPS target and then lase the weapon
to another target downrange.
“The test was very successful!”
Captain Cassell said. “The weapon
functioned properly and released successfully,
impacting the target almost
exactly where the laser spot was located.
We were able to demonstrate that the
GBU-54 can successfully be integrated
and dropped from the A-10C.”
Maj. Matthew Domsalla piloted
the historic mission. He’s been flying
the A-10 for more than eight years and
knows that this added capability will
make the A-10C even more lethal and
more valuable to warfighters needing
some firepower assistance.
“The LJDAM provides the pilot the
ability to update the targeting if the
target moves while the weapon is in
flight,” he said.
The A-10C has already demonstrated
tremendous capability in supporting
the war on terrorism. According to Lt.
Col. Evan Dertien, the 40th Flight Test
Squadron commander, putting this
bomb on the aircraft “will give the A-
10 an outstanding precision targeting
capability that will help the Air Force
continue to provide precision engagement.”
And while making Air Force history
is a great feeling for the 40th team,
Colonel Dertien says the rewards of a
successful test are more far reaching.
“When the weapons are proven in
combat and you get feedback from the
deployed flying units that a capability
worked as expected and made a difference
in the fight, that’s the big payoff,”
he said.
The next step for the A-10C and
LJDAM is to undergo operational tests
to develop tactics and techniques for
employing the weapon. If those tests
prove to go as well as the first, Eglin’s test
team may have their feedback as early
as January. The goal is to have this new
precision capability deployed to the area
of operations by early 2009.
Civilians graduate with
lessons in military culture
MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE,
Ala. (AFNS)—The first class of the
Civilian Acculturation and Leadership
Training program graduated recently
here giving the 25 attendees a better
understanding of what the active-duty
Air Force does.
The course, designed to acquaint
civilian employees with military culture,
included lessons on Air Force core
values, communications, leadership,
and team building.
Exercises at the Project-X training
facility, a war game and presentations
by senior Air Force leadership rounded
out the course curriculum.
Air University was originally tasked
to develop a civilian training program
with an OTS-type curriculum, said Dr.
Charles Nath, the Holm Center director
of curriculum.
“All indications are the training is
going very well,” Dr. Nath said. “We
started out with high expectations,
and it appears it is going better than we
expected. The students seem to recognize
the importance of what they are
learning at CALT and the importance
of continuing civilian education for
their careers.”
During a presentation to CALT students,
Lt. Gen. Allen G. Peck, the Air
they were a “beta-test” for a program
designed to educate them in a format
other than on-the-job training.
“You are part of about 40,000 resident
students who come to Air University
every year to learn to be better
leaders,” he said. “Leadership requires
balance, and to be a good leader you
have to go where you are not comfortable.
The point is, if you stay where you
are comfortable, you are missing out.”
He told attendees the Air Force is
unique in that it grooms leaders to
promote from within rather than hiring
from the outside. The general also
presented a list of ineffective leadership
traits to include not adhering to Air
Force core values, bad attitudes, failure
to provide vision, and not accepting
responsibility.
Joseph M. McDade Jr., the director of
Force Development for the deputy chief
of staff for Manpower and Personnel at
the Pentagon, visited the CALT course
on its final day of class and observed the
war game exercise.
“Civilian force development is a
top priority among senior leaders, and
CALT is an example of that,” he said.
“The program ensures a balanced portfolio
of leadership development for all
Airmen. Here we have potential civilian
leaders who are saying they want to be a
part of the Air Force team, and the Air
Force is at an historic crossroads with
regard to our civilians.”
Jim Wiggins, the chief of Curriculum
Development for the Reserve
Officer Training Corps and OTS said
the students have praised the program’s
content, and all of the feedback he has
received is positive.
“Also, across the board, the amount
of work that has gone into this training
has been phenomenal. Staff members
received the task as an additional
duty but have treated it as if it were
their primary jobs,” he said. “We have
three more classes scheduled for the
first parts of December, February and
March, and it is a developmental process.
We will tweak the course as we go
along and adapt as needed.”
The program is great because it
brings civilians into the military’s
world, said Valeria Murray, a CALT student
from the 754th Electronic Systems
Group at Gunter Annex, Ala.
“CALT is perfectly designed to make
you a better leader, and that’s what the
Air Force is all about,” she said. “I’ve
enjoyed the instructors because they
are very knowledgeable and bring a lot
of experience to the table.”
“We are all Air Force, but in reality,
military members and the civilians
don’t really know each other very well,”
said Capt. Paul Yuzapavik, a senior
instructor and chief of the war game.
“Hopefully, CALT remedies that to a
certain extent. I know for me this has
been great because it gave me an opportunity
to sit down and talk with these
civilians and get their perspective.”
The students came to CALT knowing
it was an Air Force familiarization
program, but Captain Yuzapavik said
he doesn’t think they realized the leadership
and managerial expectations
of the curriculum. When they were
confronted with the war game aspect of
the course, it became a real eye-opener
for many of the future leaders.
The students completed the war
game successfully, and received diplomas
from Mr. McDade. He told the
group he was honored and humbled to
stand before the first graduating class
of CALT.
“Our enemies can steal our technology,
but they can’t steal the experience
and training these civilians are
getting in this course,” Mr. McDade
said. “I would like to see the students
go through the course many times
so when they come up against an adversary,
they will be able to out-think
them.”

minutes of play vaulted the 422nd Test
and Evaluation Squadron to a 12-0 record
and the 2008 Fitness and Sports Center
Intramural Football Championship over
the 57th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron
Viper Aircraft Maintenance Unit Nov. 17.
The National Football Conference division
champion Green Bats defeated Viper
13 -12 after stopping the Viper comeback
with 2:14 left on the game clock when
Quarterback Justin Vandervander closed
the score to within one point with a touchdown
toss .
The outcome of the championship was
almost a mirror image of the game the two
teams played earlier in the season when the
422nd TES team beat Viper AMU team 7 -
6. “They gave us our toughest challenge this
season on two different occasions,” said 422
TES Quarterback Harold Young.
Young helped lead the 422nd TES team,
which consists of members from the 98th
Range Wing and the 59th TES, to its eventual
win with two touchdown passes, the
game winner of which came with four minutes
left to play. “Teamwork is the reason we
won. All season it has been what helped us
win,” he said following the game.
“I’m exceptionally proud of them,” Maj.
William Tracy, 59th TES commander, said
of the 422nd TES. “They played a great
game against a great team.”
RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS)—
The Tops In Blue, the Air Force’s premiere entertainment
showcase, is accepting applications until Dec.
2 for its 2009 talent search.
The 2009 talent call encourages vocalists, instrumentalists,
dancers, and nonmusical talent such as
comedians, dramatists, and magicians to submit an
application and audition video.
Airmen with skills in audio, lighting, staging,
video, and even driving, are also being recruited. All
Air Force active-duty, Reserve and Guard members
are eligible to compete.
Top applicants will vie for first and second place
trophies during the Air Force Worldwide Talent Search
Competition Jan. 11 through 19 at Lackland Air Force
Base, Texas. In addition to the trophies, contestants
compete in various performing arts programs that
include dance and musical auditions. These special
Fifty-five years ago, the Air Force Talent Program
began with local auditions. Today, the process is
streamlined to expedite and expand auditioning
opportunities.
As part of this streamlining effort, Air Force
Entertainment recently created a new Tops In Blue
Web site that is designed to attract the Internetsavvy
generation.
“It’s all about keeping up with the times and
connecting with our audience and potential talent
pool,” said Tom Edwards, chief of Air Force Entertainment
at the Air Force Services Agency in San
Antonio.
The new site gives Airmen an easy way to submit
their talent application, upload their audition video
and receive confirmation that their application is
in the system, Mr. Edwards said.
“The new site is important to the successful
infusion of new talent into our program,” he said.
“Since launching it, there has been a huge increase
in interest and applications.”
Spouses to teachers program transitions to Military OneSource
Effective October 1, 2008, the
Spouses to Teachers program transitioned
to the Military OneSource
Center under the Military Spouse Career
Advancement Account Program
(MSCAAP).
in technology now make hearing aids
into high-tech medical devices. The
best hearing aids ever made are now in
production. Retirees can obtain hearing
aids at significant savings by using the
programs. Two hearing aids can usually
be purchased for less than $2,000. Exact
costs are variable and subject to change
at any time without notice. Contact
your nearest audiology clinic for fur-
Through the MSCAAP, consultants
are available to provide career and
education guidance for active duty
military spouses. The new program
under Military OneSource will be
operational in January 2009.
ther details. Not every medical facility
of active duty members takes precedent
at all MTFs. It is recommended that you
contact the appropriate facility before
incurring significant travel expenses.
A list of stateside and overseas facilities
currently participating with telephone
numbers can be found at http://militaryaudiology.org/site/rachaprhapp-lo
Under the MSCAAP military spouses
nationwide will be able to receive
up to $6,000 for tuition assistance
for a teacher licensure program. For
more information please visit www.
The Kearns were a typical 1960’s Detroit
family, trying to live their version of the
American Dream. Local university professor
Bob married teacher Phyllis and, by their
mid-thirties, had six kids who brought them
a hectic but satisfying Midwestern existence.
When Bob invents a device that would eventually
be used by every car in the world, the
Kearns think they have struck gold. But their
aspirations are dashed after the auto giants
who embraced Bob’s creation unceremoniously
shunned the man who invented it.
Roger Ferris is the best man US intelligence
has on the ground. In operations that take
him around the globe, Ferris’s next breath
Hoffman is on the trail of an emerging
terrorist leader who has orchestrated a campaign
of bombings while eluding the most
sophisticated intelligence network in the
world. To lure the terrorist, Ferris will have to
penetrate his murky world, but the closer he
gets to the target, the more he discovers that
trust is both a dangerous commodity and the
only one that will get him out alive.
VA Loans are by far the ABSOLUTE BEST
purchase loans around!
With over 24,000 homes on the market in the Las Vegas area
NOW is the time to buy!
VA Loans are available to veterans of military service and active
duty and reservists. Your eligibility for a VA loan depends on
your length of service and your discharge status. You can apply
for a VA loan if you’re active duty, retired, or even a reservist.
This loan allows for 100% financing of the purchase price of
the home and does not require any monthly mortgage insurance,
a common requirement of most loans. 100% financing simply
means you do NOT HAVE TO PUT ANY MONEY DOWN.
• Dept. of Veterans Affairs has NO CREDIT or FICO score
requirements
