Weapons School conducts air mobility exercise

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — The U.S. Air 

Force Weapons School conducted a large-scale exercise 

over the Nevada Test and Training Range May 18. 

The school’s Mobility Air Forces Exercise, or 

MAFEX, simulated a major airlift operation to seize 

a landing zone inside enemy territory. 

The complex operation involved Air Force and 

Army units from around the U.S., including C-17 

Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft, 

fighters, tankers, and reconnaissance aircraft and 

ground units. Its phases simulated entering a defended 

airspace, establishing air superiority, countering 

ground threats, and then deploying an airborne force 

to seize an access point for follow-on ground operations. 

Lt. Col. Chris Collette, commander of the weapons 

school’s C-17 squadron, said the exercise tested 

students’ ability to apply what they’ve learned from 

the school’s challenging curriculum. 

“The overall goal of the weapons school is to create 

weapon systems experts who can plan missions, execute 

them, and then instruct others on how to do it,” the 

colonel said. “Our mantra is ‘build, teach, and lead.’ 

“What we’re executing in MAFEX is called a ‘joint 

forcible entry.’ Our primary customer is the Army - we 

use our air mobility forces to get their units into combat. 

MAFEX challenges our students to do just that, with 

some fairly big tactical problems thrown their way that 

they have to overcome,” Colonel Collette explained.

The son of a retired U.S. 

Navy senior chief petty officer, 

Sergeant Hermogino gradu- 

ated from Basic High School 

in Las Vegas in 1998 and, prior to 

transitioning to the U.S. Army 

in 2009, he served eight years in 

the U.S. Air Force as a medical 

administrator.

Commentary: I have arrived!

(AFNS) — When I made staff sergeant, 

I thought, “This is it! I have arrived!” 

My ego was quickly squashed when 

my supervisor informed me that not 

only was I going to continue the duties 

I was already performing, but now I 

also was getting three Airmen to supervise, 

mentor and lead. 

After several years of studying and 

working hard, I moved on to the next 

level. When I made master sergeant and 

joined the senior NCO ranks, I thought, 

“Certainly this is it. I was shown the 

secret handshake. I have arrived!” 

Once again, reality slapped me up 

alongside the head when I realized I 

had even more people to supervise, I 

was responsible for the smooth operation 

of the section, and I needed to 

step up my community service, selfimprovement 

and base involvement if 

I wanted to get promoted again.

Guam — I handed a coin to the driver 

saying, “You are taking my brother-inlaw 

on his last ride. I don’t want you 

to forget this.” 

No one who knew Maj. Philip Ambard 

will ever forget him. He was born 

in Venezuela, but loved his adopted 

country passionately. He joined the U.S. 

Air Force, quickly moving up the ranks 

and being selected for senior master 

sergeant before being commissioned. 

Phil had five kids, four of who are now 

serving in the active duty military. 

Phil was a foreign language professor 

at the U.S. Air Force Academy 

in Colorado Springs. He deployed to 

Afghanistan four months ago to help

A few more years passed, and I 

thought I was a lot wiser. I had the graying 

hair and subtle wrinkles to prove 

it. When I made chief master sergeant, 

I thought, “Holy smoke! I’m finally a 

chief! I’ll get a special parking spot, 

take long lunch hours, play golf every 

Friday, and I won’t need to do anything 

extra because I’m not going to make 

‘E-10.’ Surely, I have arrived!” 

The truth is I haven’t arrived. I’ve 

just begun. If I want to make this Air 

Force better for those who come after 

me and want my Air Force -- our Air 

Force -- to continue to be the best, 

most feared air force in the world, 

then I have to show our future leaders 

and the American public that it’s not 

okay to sit back on my laurels and it’s 

not okay to abuse the stripes I have 

the privilege of wearing. If I believe 

in our core values and don’t want to 

become the epitome of the old adage, 

“Do as I say, not as I do,” or one of 

those ROAD (retired on active duty) 

sergeants, then I need to: 

train the Afghan Air Force. His life 

came to an end in Kabul after a lone 

gunman opened fire, killing nine Airmen. 

I suppose I had gotten used to 

deployments. We are a military family 

with many deployments to the area of 

responsibility. None of us ever thought 

we would have to pay such a high price 

to defend freedom. 

I have officiated dozens of funerals 

as a military chaplain, but I have 

never seen anything as profound as 

what took place during the days that 

followed Phil’s death. His body came 

into Peterson Air Force Base on a 

Wednesday. Our family was met by 

the senior leadership of several surrounding 

military communities. They 

knew our names and embraced us with 

tears. I won’t forget the two chaplains 

who stood beside us as we received 

his body. Their steadfast presence was

feelings or being the bad guy when

We followed his car in a bus down 

the 2-mile long corridor of Peterson 

AFB and out the front gate. It was 

lined with hundreds of U.S. and allied 

military, civilians and Patriot Guard 

riders. A rolling salute followed his 

remains. I remember distinctly the 

elderly woman with an oxygen tank 

standing in the cold, hand over heart, 

giving honor to Phil as he passed by. 

The cadets led his remains through 

an arch of sabers into the hallowed 

steel cathedral. His five children, my 

sister and Brig. Gen. Dana Born (the 

Academy’s dean of the faculty) spoke 

eloquently of his life. The hundreds of 

mourners and I shared that moment. 

We felt a connection to his life and to 

his sacrifice as only military families 

can in the face of our fallen. 

When I led my family out to the

In one form or another, these things 

have been a part of every creed we have 

ever had. The list could go on and on. 

Do I want to make “E-10?” Of 

course I do. And I want to not only 

earn my paycheck, but hopefully, just 

hopefully, when the time comes to 

close this chapter in my life, I will be 

able to look in the mirror and say I 

gave it my all and I made a difference 

in some Airman’s life. 

No, I haven’t arrived. Have you?

drive. The driver, still holding tightly 

to his coin, looked at me and said, “We 

are taking a non-standard route to the 

cemetery. I hope you don’t mind.” 

We pulled out onto the sun-draped 

Terrazzo where students march and 

travel to and from class. But today 

was not a day of coming and going. 

Today they lined his route. A silent 

field of blue with proud, slow salutes 

walked beside us as they said goodbye 

to their beloved professor. His life and 

his death would not be forgotten. His 

lessons will continue. 

When anyone dies in combat, we all 

have suffered profoundly. It is in tragedy 

that I look for hope in knowing 

that, like the disciples on the road to 

Emmaus, Jesus stands beside me even 

when I don’t know that he is there.

GS-12 and GS-13 civilians, and will 

continue June 21 for GS-7 through 

GS-11 civilians. 

Webcast topics will include how to 

plan for the next job, how education 

affects careers, and more. The webcast 

series, which started this month with 

guidance for GS-14 and GS-15 civilian 

Airmen, supports the Air Force commitment 

to developing Airmen, said

The webcasts will focus specifically 

on what people in specific grade 

groups need to know. Briefings will be 

broadcast at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. central

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Nevada Benefits Foundation 

and Gold Star Families honored four fallen 

Nellis Airmen during the 6th Annual Defending 

Freedom Memorial dedication ceremony at the Red 

Rock Canyon Visitors Center May 14. 

Hosted annually, the event honors fallen servicemembers 

with ties to Nevada and provides a forum 

for the community to express its appreciation for 

this sacrifice. The Defending Freedom Memorial 

was initially dedicated in 2005 and is comprised 

of seven sandstones with the engraved names of 

Nevada’s fallen servicemen and women. 

This year, the names Nellis Airmen Senior Airman 

Michael Buras, Staff Sgt. David Smith, 1st Lt. 

Joel Gentz and Capt. David Wisniewski were added 

to the memorial. All four Airmen were lost in 2010 

while supporting operations in Afghanistan. The 

names of three other Nevada servicemembers U.S. 

Army Spc. Brian Tabada, U.S. Army Sgt. Matthew 

Hennigan and U.S. Marines Sgt. Frank Zaehringer 

will also be added to the memorial. All three servicemembers 

were also lost in Afghanistan during 

combat operations in 2010 and 2011.

Program offers free museum visits to military members and families

members and their families can visit a wide 

array of museums for free from Memorial 

Day through Labor Day, courtesy of the second 

annual Blue Star Museums program. 

Kathy Roth-Douquet, the Blue Star 

Families chairman, and Rocco Landesman, 

the chairman of the National Endowment 

for the Humanities, announced this 

year’s program May 23 in San Diego. 

“Blue Star Museums recognizes and 

thanks our military families for all 

they are doing for our country,” Mr. 

Landesman said, “and simultaneously 

begins young people on a path to become 

lifelong museum-goers.” 

Ms. Roth-Douquet noted the program’s 

success in its first year. 

“We are thrilled that 300,000 military 

family members visited our partner museums 

in the summer of 2010,” she said.” 

We hope to exceed that number this 

year as the military community takes 

advantage of the rich cultural heritage 

they defend and protect every day. 

“We appreciate the NEA and the nation’s 

museums who chose to partner 

with us,” she continued. “We also are 

grateful to our friends at the MetLife 

Foundation, the lead supporter of the 

Blue Star Museums outreach initiative, 

whose generous donation helps 

make our work possible.” 

This year, more than 1,300 museums 

in all 50 states, the District of 

Columbia, Puerto Rico and American 

Samoa are taking part in the initiative, 

including more than 500 new museums 

this year, officials said, and others 

may join throughout the summer. 

The Blue Star Museums program 

runs from May 30 through Sept. 5. The 

free admission program is available to 

active-duty military and their immediate 

family members –military ID holder 

and up to five immediate family members.

WASHINGTON (AFPS) — Stemming the incidence 

of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, 

requires awareness, education and recognizing its 

symptoms, a senior military psychiatrist said. 

Navy Capt. Paul S. Hammer, director of the Defense 

Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic

friends and fellow service members,” Captain Hammer 

said. “They must act on it so something is done.” 

Taking action doesn’t necessarily call for a major 

intervention, he said. 

“Sometimes reaching out and talking to someone 

can put that person on the right path to get the help 

he needs,” he suggested. 

Recognizing signs of the stress disorder early can 

be the key to successfully diagnose and treat affected 

individuals, Captain Hammer said. 

“PTSD can be a really complicated entity,” he 

said. “People think it’s one thing, but it can manifest 

itself in a lot of different ways and contexts.” 

PTSD is not gender-specific and tell-tale signs vary 

from one person to the next, but Captain Hammer 

said some factors might add up to the stress diagnosis. 

He said it’s important to recognize such symptoms as 

combat stress, substance abuse, talks of suicide and 

depression. Getting help begins with awareness and 

education at all levels of the military, he said. 

Captain Hammer said post-traumatic stress was once 

a condition discovered only after troops returned home 

following deployments. Now, however, the services 

include post-traumatic stress awareness instruction for 

new recruits in basic training, and warfighters are monitored 

for symptoms during their military careers. 

“We’ve got to take care of ourselves and take care 

of each other,” Captain Hammer said. “The idea of

awareness is to take appropriate action and have the 

courage to reach out and take help.” 

“The Army (incorporates awareness) in resilience 

training and comprehensive soldier fitness, and by 

training master resilience trainers,” he added. “So 

there’s a huge effort among the services to really 

develop a level of resilience.” 

Combating the stigma attached to mental health 

counseling also is taught to service members as part of 

the military’s awareness campaign, Captain Hammer 

said. For many people, the longtime stigma is an overwhelming 

barrier to diagnosis and treatment. 

Denial of post-traumatic stress also can develop, 

which he described as a “tougher nut to crack.” Denial 

is a person’s perception that people are doing 

fine, Captain Hammer added. 

“They don’t want to see themselves or be seen as 

weak, damaged or ill,” he said. 

“I think huge headway has been made on stigma,” 

he said. “You see senior officers and senior enlisted 

members who are much more willing to speak out 

and talk about it. I can’t imagine a time, when I 

first came in, that I would hear a sergeant major 

talk about PTSD, and now it’s routine.” 

“No doubt the stigma is still out there, but we’ve 

still made an enormous amount of progress,” Captain 

Hammer said. “But there’s more to do. We’re not 

resting on our laurels. We’re still working on it.”

“After learning what they take away 

from this, we want our students to go 

back to their units and make them more 

effective, too,” he said. 

Capt. Scott Johnson, a C-17 student assigned 

to the 14th Airlift Squadron at Charleston 

Air Force Base, S.C., described some of 

the obstacles the exercise presented. 

“Our C-17s went out and joined a formation 

that was 15 miles long,” he said. “We 

dealt with real-world problems like severe 

weather - thunderstorms and high winds - 

as well as scenario problems like simulated 

threats and integrating tons of units. 

“When you’re working with such a large 

and mixed formation of aircraft, you have 

a lot of things that make it difficult. For 

instance, when you have C-17’s flying with 

C-130’s, you have a speed difference. They 

have to keep different spacing because of 

the size difference,” he explained. 

Captain Johnson said the challenge offered 

its participants many insights. 

“It brings us all together. You get to know 

each other’s capabilities. Working with so 

many different systems and units, you learn 

what is and isn’t a silly question. You learn to 

speak each others’ language,” he said. 

MAFEX was orchestrated in main by 

the weapons school’s 12 C-17 and C-130 

students, all experienced instructor pilots 

whose training will reach post-graduate 

level during the six months they spend at the 

school. Although instructors help students 

as needed and a colonel oversees the exercise 

as air mission commander, Colonel Collette 

said the students do nearly all of the “heavy 

lifting” in preparation for the exercise. 

“We put our students right in the seat, 

and they do it all,” he said. “We teach 

a methodology of thinking. We teach 

them to take a problem, break it down, 

incorporate others to solve the problem, 

and integrate solutions so that they 

carry forward to future operations. 

“They must be critical thinkers. They are 

problem solvers,” Colonel Collette added. 

Capt. Bret Echard, a C-130 student from the 

41st Airlift Squadron at Little Rock Air Force 

Base, Ark., described the weapons school 

course that MAFEX is part of as a “leadership 

course disguised as a tactics course. 

“The academics are designed to teach 

you the ‘nuts and bolts’ of your system 

- to make you an expert,” he explained. 

“Then you go fly it. Then they add in how 

to mission plan and how to integrate with 

other units, and you carry that out. 

“It’s a building block system. By the time 

you’re done, you know all about your piece of 

the pie and what all the other pieces do as well. 

You can integrate it, make a plan that will actually 

work, and lead it,” Captain Echard said. 

“Today we planned a mission involving 

10 different airframes and a number of 

ground units. You can imagine the differences 

and challenges integrating all of 

those into one operation,” he said. 

“That’s really what we do here. We 

take all these different capabilities and 

put them together to achieve one objective 

- to get the mission done.”
