Hi All
Well the National AGM is fast approaching and for those heading East,
travel plans are most likely well underway. If you are still pondering about
whether to attend, there isn’t much time left (as we know, time just zips
past the older we get and before you know it, the AGM will have been and
gone).
And whilst the National AGM is just around the corner, so too, is the AGM for WSW.
Nomination forms will be available from the MARCH social meeting with voting taking place at
the MAY social meeting. To ensure that everyone who is entitled to vote is afforded the
courtesy, can you all PLEASE ensure your records are up to date at a local level (your details
as provided at a national level are available locally for privacy reasons). Our “little red book” is
where you, the member, update the records for WSW. Please see either Secretary Sandra or
myself at social meetings to check your records.
This past weekend we had our Masked Ball and it was great to see many of the guests get into
the spirit of the event – ladies in evening dresses and gents in formal wear – a sight to behold.
Alan and Annie were our judges for the evening and the winners of best costume went to
Janette (Pride) for the ladies and to Joe (Casserly) for the gents. Well done! Carli is sure to
have photos in either this or the next edition of the Sound Rides so keep your eyes peeled.
I take this opportunity to wish Keith Wellfare (Committee Member and MC with the ability to
shock us and make us laugh all at the same time!) - safe travels as he ventures off for a 3-
month sojourn around this vast country, taking in the AGM on his journey. Keith’s preparations
have been over 12 months in the making and his trailer has now been finished (a labour of
love!) and is complete with Ulysses number plate. Whilst he will be away for three of our social
meetings, no doubt he will keep us entertained with snippets in the Sound Rides over the next
few months.
Keith, ride safe and more importantly, remember the journey!
Now as we know, sometimes the best things are said / written in total innocence (“out of the
mouth of babes” is a saying that comes time mind). And below says it all! Just how true is
this?!
Until next month
Ride safe, stay upright
Cheers
Lee

Evening All.
Another month of varying rides & raising funds, for
various events & charity donations. A big thank you to
everyone that helped out at The Mandurah Triathlon,
good team effort & to Chris for the organising. Couldn’t
make it this time but I believe the Fireworks in Bunbury,
led there by Derek & Jules was a great night, although
Sed had a fright on the way home?
And what a busy weekend they had, a very interesting & scenic ride to
Mandurah for Fish & Chips the next day, cheers Derek & Jules.
Thanks to Chris & Dianna for the Australia Day Brekky on the beach. And
Peter & Allan are back on the Bitumen after two outings on Dirt roads.
Hope that everyone who supported the Valentines Dance had a great time.
RIDING ON JOURNAL.
The ‘Riding On’ journal is an official publication of the Club, and is published four
times per year, in February, May, August and November. The name ‘Riding On’ is a
registered trademark of the Club.25 Every member of the Club receives a copy of the
journal. The journal is produced by a publishing company which recovers much of
the costs of production from advertising in the journal, subsidised by payment from
the Club from membership funds.
Journal content is controlled by the Editor, who maintains all editorial control
subject to National Committee scrutiny. Generally, much of the content is sourced
by the editor, and anything deemed to be contentious is submitted to the National
Committee for approval to publish.
Because of the costs involved in conducting a mail out of notices to all members, the
Riding On journal is also used for official notices, as cost of sending the journal to
all members is already budgeted for. Some members from time to time question the
need for each member in a household to receive a journal, but as it contains official
notices, this procedure is a considerable cost saving over mailing out such notices to
all members.

Hi everyone,
Hope everyone who went to the masked ball enjoyed
themselves. What a great night it was, and plenty of supportive
feedback, so thank’s for that, it makes it all worthwhile.
Looking on the ride calender there are plenty of great rides and activities in
store for the next month.
If anyone would like to view the December Natcom minutes, see me after the
meeting and I will give you connection.
Can everyone who have raffle book’s please return them back to me, with
money A.S.A.P. Thankyou to all who made the effort for such an important
cause.
Stay Safe, Sandra.
Hi all by the time you read this I will have perfected my suxes
again and hopefully not having as hot a days as over here. The
masked ball will be over and so will some of the triathlons. The
triathlons are really fun ways to raise money and a good chance
to be seen in public. The public need to see us in a good light. I was told the
other day that we were the group that like to speed everywhere. Some enjoy a
blat at an appropriate time but as a group I let them know we have orderly rides.
Rockingham Hospital have had photos showing what they purchased with our
donation and expecting to hear from Salvation Army and Shenton Park soon.
Ride safe everyone and I will see you next month.
Can you guess which fellow wanderer this is?
Someone will be around shortly to collect your answers.
CAN YOU HELP?
Mish is trying to organise a busy bee on the 16/2 to clean up her daughters
garden. There are a large number of trees to be removed, some rubbish to
be taken to the tip, a fence to be wired back together, paving to be removed,
so the little ones can have somewhere to play. There will be morning tea,
sausage sizzle, avo tea, drinks supplied and beer at the end of the day. If
you have any opened tins of house paint that your not using, could I please
have them? I'm not worried about the colours as they will possibly be mixed
with white anyway to make sure I get enough to paint my daughters place.
On the 17/2 I need a few people to help lift a spa over a fence (it's at a
friends place in Guildford) It's only the shell, no surround as it's come out
of the ground, so shouldn't be to heavy.
If your able to help with any/all of the above please contact Mish on
0420264440 or justmishhere@gmail.com

AGM.
To anyone worried that the recent floods in Queensland
will prevent the Fraser Coast from conducting the 2013
AGM Event; You can rest easy. Everything is under
control!
While there was some flooding within the Maryborough
CBD, the water has now gone and local shops are
already back to business as usual. Some mud still
remains, but within days there will be no sign that the
flood ever occurred. Such is the resilience of
Queenslanders.
The Showgrounds, which will be the venue for the
Ulysses Club 2013 AGM Event, was unaffected and plans
are well and truly on track.
So, put your minds at ease and look forward to a
spectacular Event. The Fraser Coast is waiting to
welcome you.
Raffle.
Janette is always looking
for donations for the
monthly raffle, if you have
something you would like
to donate just bring it
along to the next meeting.
Well its now 2013 and that means the
opportunity for the next 10 months to vote
for the ride, casserole night or event that
stands out as the Best Social Adventure for
you. Remember to vote through out the
year. Final nominations need to be in by
the close of the November social meeting.

Susans Moto GP story.
Fri 19 th Oct - After much stuffing around at Dr Mario's
with a bit of a hic up or two on the little boy. Finally packed
and ready to go.
All night I could hear the little Italian boy singing…The bags
are packed I’m ready to go I’m standing here outside Your
door.
Saturday 20 th Oct, I rode to Christine’s after work. We
headed to Merredin to stay the night with another Guzzi
owner.
It was A basic trip from north of the city to Merredin,
having to contend with cage drivers, trucks and lots of those
Holdens with the pretty blue & red lights. Luckily we weren't
trying to make the miles. Stinga turned on his culinary
expertise with an Italian dinner to honour Italian bikes.
Relaxing in Merredin with a few
lemonades, cheese & biscuits.
Sun 21 st Oct - Damn! I knew I needed to listen to the little voices in my head, when
they said top up in Southern Cross. It's amazing how much fuel one uses going 1 or 2 ks
over the limit with strong head on winds. So, 24ks out of Coolgardie, Christine went
off for fuel for the little boy and 40 mins later comes over the rise then pulls in
alongside. My first thought is she has one of those Mary Poppins Panniers. Nope the
gerry can had fallen off somewhere.
So off Christine goes again to look for the misplaced can, while I am bent double over
in laughter. No wonder no cars stopped - a lunatic on the loose. Occy straps vs Andy
straps. give me occy straps any day. So much for an early start. Another 45mins and
we hit the road again.
Then there was a moment with the boys in blue with an unmarked car, near Norseman.
After seeing them braking and giving us daggers, we constantly checked the rear view.
Lucky outcome!
We had heard there were bikes a day in front heading to Moto GP though didn’t see
any other bikers that day. After dodging lots of road kill and riding though a river of
blood between Caiguna and Cocklebiddy, Our day ended at 5pm. I might also mention ,
there is a thousand and one uses for a Guzzi. Managed to
decapitate a brown. Christine was a little worried that it
would flick up and in its last dying gasp latch on to her
throat.
Monday 22nd Oct - when we pulled in at Mundrabilla we
found this....

Page 10 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 2
Yes ! A bubbled wrapped motor bike and yes! Wondered if it was a precious Harley
underneath. Being us we couldn't help ourselves and just had to ask. It wasn't a Harley. We
were reassured it was a 'Vincent' that had been on mission to a rally in NSW
That night we rested at the Iron Knob Hotel. After realising it was much later than we
thought due to that strange invisible time line. Alan the publican was surprised and happy
to see us. I hadn’t told him we were coming. Yeah some hard core riding and on the lookout
for Roos on the last stretch Caught up to a few bikers who raised eyebrows when we
mentioned where we had left from that day and where we hoped to end up. (wooses). Every
other fuel up, we kept coming across a fella that Christine had chatted up in Cocklebiddy
and wondered if he and his prize alpacas were stalking us all the way to Poochera.
Tues 23 rd Oct – We stopped in Narracoorte to feast on
Australia’s largest donut that overlaps a dinner plate – we went
halves for brunch.
Pulled in at Keith for the night and who did we see??? 5
members of the Great Southern branch. A friendly lot who Let us use their kitchen to
make a cuppa and cook our dinner while they were at the pub.
Weds 24 th Oct - Anyhow a big time out
there with lots of people marvelling at two girls on
WA plates heading to the Moto GP. We managed to
catch up with a few more bikes on the Great Ocean
Road with WA plates. It was a cruisey enjoyable
ride through the elbow bends and speccy scenery. A
much nicer ride than last time. This time being
midweek and the road has been repaired.
Finally relaxing at a friends place in Melbourne,
before heading off to the island tomorrow.
Thurs 25 th – Sun 28th Oct - Had a lovely day
browsing the accessory sections of the
motorcycle shops in Elizabeth street. Christine
fell in lurve with a greeny coloured Guzzi Griso
in the Aprilla shop. Colour is a big factor for us
girls. We ended up at Peter Stevens far too
long, Christine stocked up on Jackets. Then
bought chaps at Mars Leathers. One must keep
her away from shops when there is a time limit
to hit the road. They all loved her credit card.
We finally got back to Lou's house, packed the
bikes. It started to rain as we pulled the bikes
out of the shed. Typical Phillip Island weekend. Then being so late the 145ks to the Island

Page 11 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 2
took us 2 and a half hours through stop and start peak hour traffic on the freeway,
not pleasant along with the rain. Then there were the gale force winds on the last 40k
stretch that had the bikes on a 45 degree angle. Felt like we were back on the
Nullabor.
Amazing to come onto the Island to see bike after bike roll in. A wonderful
atmosphere and sight. The whole weekend was a big party, full of thousands upon
thousands of enthusiasts.
We Shared a house with 8 other friends - 9 bikes in the yard and one car. Lots of
Lemonade passed our lips, however that didn’t deter any of us from enjoying the
spirited atmosphere on the island.
Friday I came across friends at the Siberia stand. It was Very fitting that they had
chosen there right next to the Bass Straight, so they could look longingly at their
homeland.
Qualifying round was excellent. We were in the pits
when I was almost run down by Stoner and his marshal,
as they came into the pits after his little topple. (Lucky,
yes ! I have some influential acquaintances.) Bugger,
where is the camera when you need it.... Not turned on
ready. I know now to have camera in hand turned on
when you are in the pits.
Yes…It was a truly wonderful day and a fantastic
atmosphere. Great to see Stoner win, though I do so wish Pedrosa had
tried a little harder to stay upright and the fact
that Lorenzo didn't need to win to get his world
title. Made it look too easy for Stoner. Don't get
me wrong, Stoner is an excellent rider and knows
that track well. I totally admire his skill.
One of the most amusing sights is the Bronx camp
site. They could just about charge admission. Very
apt the inhabitants were enclosed by a cyclone
fence. Some had come
with trailers loaded with
household furniture. One
camp site had a sign
saying “Do not feed the
Bears” and they were
dressed as Bears.
Read the rest next month.

DEREK & JULIE’S BUSY WEEKEND:
AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE !oi, oi, oi!!
CASSEROLE (Hamburger) NIGHT: 25th January, 2013:
This night was huge success, it was a great start to the GREAT OZ WEEKEND. Approx
43 people came around to our place to eat, drink and merriment. Derek and Grant were
our BBQ chefs, and they did a “fair dinkum” awesome job. There were bowls of onions,
lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, beetroot, pineapple which could all be slapped onto a bun.
Thank you to all the ladies who brought a dessert for “afters” (if you could find the room
to fit it in). The weather was perfect and it was sad when everyone went home.
FIREWORKS BUNBURY: 26TH January, 2013:
30 of us met at Shell Waikiki and at 4.30pm we “hit the frog and toad”, and headed
straight down to the Freeway via Paganoni Rd. While it was warm in the sun we had a
strong sea-breeze all the way. Settlers Roadhouse was our pit stop where we had
arranged to meet 4 extras. Arrived in the car park approx 6.45pm and walked over the
bridge to meet more members who were lucky enough to be staying at the “Lighthouse”
Resort for the night.
Everyone was free to walk around the carnival and enjoy all the fun of the fair. 8.30pm
lights out and eyes skywards, “BOMBS AWAY’!!!! The sky burst into beautiful coloured
explosions. Afterwards, we met back at the bikes for the ride home. The traffic was kind
to us, well, we were a bit sneaky, but while others blasted home, the rest of us stayed
pretty much together. Between Pinjarra and Mandurah we saw our first and only
kangaroo. Derek spotted him to the left, I spotted him, don’t know how he missed me, but
it copped a hit from Sed. Luckily Sed didn’t come off, he’s ok just a bit of a sore leg, bike’s
ok, Brian swerved and did some tricky maneuvers!! Well done to us all!!!! Arrived safe
and sound ready for tomorrow’s ride.
SUNDAY 27TH January, 2013:
This ride had a good turn-out too. We all set off behind Derek and headed for
the hills. At Dwellingup a few riders stayed, the rest of us went on turned off
the main road and headed on the “Coolup” Rd. It was a lovely ride to the South West
Hwy, Old Bunbury Rd, over the Forrest Hwy, and along the first Estuary Rd to the
Mandurah Coast Rd. Then into Mandurah to Ciccerello’s for a “feed”. A few riders went
their own way but as always, we had a great ride, great food and great company. Derek
and I would love to thank everyone who helped us and supported us throughout the
weekend, without you it would not have been as much fun.
Cheers,
Derek & Julie

On PAR with Rheumatoid Arthritis
Dr Kelly McKelvey
Ulysses Club Arthritis Research Fellow 2011-2012
Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in Australia. More than 31% of Australians
have a
musculoskeletal disorder affecting bone and joints, including 400,000 people
with
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
The production of auto-antibodies and chemical messages from a
circulating blood cell, called the B-cell, drive the joint destructive
process contributing to RA.
A novel family of molecules called protease-
activated receptors (PAR) are involved in the
development of arthritis in mouse models. The aim of this project was to investigate t
he
function of PAR1 and PAR2 on B-cells during their development.
Laboratory experiments were performed on B-cells to gain
insight into how PARs control B-cell function The results
clearly show that PARs play a vital role in relaying information
on the inflammatory process. Interestingly, of the two PARs,
the results show that only PAR1 can drive inflammation.
This study concludes that PAR1 may be exploited as potential
therapeutic target for RA and possibly other autoimmune
diseases.
This work was presented at the 29th RNSH/UTS/USyd/
Kolling Scientific Research Meeting
2012 and the Australasian Society for Immunology Conference 2012 in Melbou
rne. In
addition, a scientific manuscript has been prepared for submission next year.
Yours sincerely,
Dianna Glover.
When Carli first asked me to write a bit about myself, I thought
who would be interested in me??? I haven’t done great things,
lived an exciting life, just been plain old me! Anyway, here
goes.....
Born into a typical “nuclear family” (2 adults, 2 kids), I was the
first Aussie in our family. My parents and brother were
Austrian and immigrated to Australia in 1959. As with most
Europeans, my parents tended to stick with other immigrants
for the first few years, so I was able to speak fluent German up
until I went to school. Unfortunately, I refused to speak it when
I went to school because all I wanted to do was “fit in” so I
shunned my heritage.
I grew up in Victoria with a lot of adopted aunts and uncles as we had no relatives in
Australia and in my pre school years spent a lot of time in St Kilda in the “cappuccino
strip”.
My dad worked at VW as a die setter, then International Harvester as a foreman and
mum had her own hairdressing salon. My mum says that dad tends to have a 7 year itch
with his careers so it was after being a foreman he decided to become a fisherman (could
never see the connection between the two!!), and we moved to Bermagui in NSW. I was
12 at the time and we spent one year there. It was the best year of my childhood, a
wonderful place to live. Our caravan was only 50 metres away from the beach and it was
heaven to a 12/13 year old. I was devastated when we left and I had to go back to Victoria
to live with my “Aunty” Hilda for a year while mum and dad were fishing and prawning
in WA.
I left high school just before the end of year 12 and worked for the Commonwealth Bank
for a few years, got married, had kids etc etc. My inlaws at the time had moved to WA,
and 2 weeks after my ex visited them we followed.
I worked for Rockingham Hospital on a casual basis for a while doing a variety of jobs,
usually filling in where ever they needed me. This was anything from cleaning to working
in the pharmacy store room.
In 1991 Chris & I started seeing each other and I married the love of my life and soul
mate in 1998. Only took us 7 years to get around to it! In 1993 we did a big trip to Cairns
and back with the kids in our HJ Holden towing our little
caravan. We were gone for 10 weeks and had an absolute
ball. We went to Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane
played in the snow, went snorkelling off Green Island,
hunted for Thunder Eggs just out of Rockhampton, went to
Movie World twice and much, much more. The kids still
talk about that trip 20 years later. We have had many
holidays both local and overseas since, but that one is still
one of our favourites.
Dianna Glover. Continued.
Chris and I were involved with fund raising for Variety Club and did 4 fantastic bike
runs with them before we were unable to continue because of commitments to the AGM
Events. I still try to raise money via the raffles held on Sunday runs when we can make
it. Variety is such a great help to so many kids in WA.
I figure that you should try to do at least one major new thing each year so I decided to
get my bike licence when I turned 40. I had my restricted licence for about 6 weeks before
buying a bigger bike and getting “L”’s for the unrestricted licence. Through the years I
have tackled things like going on the Treetop Walk in Walpole (I hate heights with a
passion), playing a major part in the organisation of the 2010 AGM Event in Albany (I’m
usually not one for publicity, preferring to stay in the background), kayaking in water
deeper than my height (there are sharks in those waters!), went in a teeny tiny 8 seater
plane over the Horizontal Waterfall out of Broome (every plane should have at least 2
engines), went up in a helicopter ride over the gorges at Launceston (refer back to
heights) and hope to do a lot more in the years to come.
One of the great joys in my life are my children and grandchildren. Growing up without
grandparents, I now realise what I missed out on, when I look after the grandchildren.
With 10 to keep me busy there is never a dull moment, and I love to get down and play
with them at their level.
I was asked recently why I do so much for the Ulysses Club and Warnbro Sound
Wanderers. I love to organize things and get motivated when I hear people say that the
Branch or Ulysses saved their life, or that the Branch is one of the best around, or the
Branch is the only thing that keeps us staying here. Having helped someone, or touched
their life in a positive way can only be a good thing. I really believe that karma does
happen and if I can be a good person, then good things will happen to me. Besides, it is
nice to see people smiling and happy.
What will happen after Ulysses.....who knows!! Is there anything as great as this Club???
Well, that is a snapshot of my life hope it wasn’t too boring.
Dianna

TAIL-END CHARLIE (TEC)
Tail-end Charlie - arguably equally as important as the Ride Leader.
Tail-end Charlie (TEC) rides behind the slowest rider in the group and is there to help any
rider who has mechanical or medical problems (quite often a flat tyre or no fuel).
Ideally TEC has basic first aid knowledge, a first aid kit, basic tool kit, a mobile phone and the
numbers of bike recovery, police and ambulance.
If a rider is in trouble, sometimes the ride leader is oblivious to this and it’s left to TEC to deal
with the problems.
If a bike breaks down, TEC should try to help the owner repair the fault or phone for someone
to collect the bike and rider.
If no phone service, send a rider or flag down a car to ring from the next town. Likewise, if a
person is injured or unwell, ask them, if conscious, if they would like you to seek medical help
or an ambulance.
When approaching a corner marker TEC can assist the corner marker by flashing his lights or
waving his arm to let him know you have seen him. This allows the corner marker to rejoin
the ride and for TEC to negotiate the corner without the need to slow or stop.
Hello wanderers,
So we are now half way through February and that means not
long till those of us who are going head across to the Queensland AGM, those
who are travelling across either by car or bike are invited to our home on the 16th
of February to discuss the logistics of the trip. We will fry up some sausages and
you can bring a drink if you so wish this will commence at 4pm. As this is my
fourth edition of Sound Rides I would love to hear some feedback from you all as
to how you think its going. Would you like to see any changes , more
information, or maybe less of something please feel free to let me
know. A big thank‐you to all the people who continue to send me
stuff through this makes things easier and I am really grateful for it.
Cheers Carli Rooney
