Description Built of local Leith Hill stone <strong>and</strong> with brick quoins<br />

dating from 1760. It was extended into the larger property when<br />

<strong>Dorlin</strong> was built by Lord Lugard of Abinger in 1903. Lugard was<br />

a renowned soldier, explorer, statesman <strong>and</strong> author who is<br />

generally held to have been the founder of modern day Nigeria<br />

where he was High Commissioner. He was subsequently<br />

appointed Governor of Hong Kong. He was married to the first<br />

female journalist on The Times, Flora Shaw, <strong>and</strong> together they<br />

developed the houses into a gr<strong>and</strong> country residence fit for<br />

entertaining distinguished political <strong>and</strong> literary guests who<br />

included Churchill, Ruskin, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Louis<br />

Stephenson <strong>and</strong> others. The house was filled with artefacts from<br />

all over the world <strong>and</strong> the dark carved doors, still in place today,<br />

originated in the Emir’s palace at Kano.<br />
