How about a small holly, to only 2 ft tall x 3 ft wide, that forms a compact, multi-stemmed shrub, with dark<br />
green foliage that turns purple in winter and, since it is a male form, h<strong>as</strong> no berries to tempt small children and<br />
pets. Great for accents, low-growing hedges, or part <strong>of</strong> a foundation planting. Sun to light shade with regular<br />
summer water until well established and occ<strong>as</strong>ional water thereafter. Extremely frost hardy <strong>as</strong> well, to -30F,<br />
<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ japanese blood gr<strong>as</strong>s<br />
Well-named gr<strong>as</strong>s, the bright red leaves stand out in the garden. To 12-18” tall x 12” wide, this gr<strong>as</strong>s likes<br />
well drained soil and moist conditions in full sun for best color. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Very tough and very beautiful, deciduous pea shrub with rose-purple flowers from May through frost. Grows<br />
quickly to 5 ft wide and high, but can be kept much smaller through the growing se<strong>as</strong>on and even cut to the<br />
b<strong>as</strong>e in late winter to refresh. It blooms on new wood so it gets bonus points from us. Sun to part shade with<br />
little summer water necessary once established. Heat tolerant <strong>as</strong> well. Frost hardy to -15F, mid <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Ipheion uniflorum 'Froyle Mill' star flower<br />
This native <strong>of</strong> Uruguay w<strong>as</strong> selected for its deep, uniform blue-purple color and its large flower size. A hardy<br />
bulb, its foliage appears with the flowers in early spring, then fades in summer heat, returning in September.<br />
Best in light shade in rich, light soil with regular summer water. Extremely e<strong>as</strong>y to naturalize. Frost hardy in<br />
<strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5.<br />

Isotoma fluviatilis - dark blue dark star creeper<br />
A steppable groundcover with tiny, green leaves and, in this form, dark blue, star flowers from late spring to<br />
frost. Great for filling in between pavers or over the sides <strong>of</strong> containers. Evergreen in mild winters. To only<br />
2" or so tall spreading to 18-24" wide. Full sun in co<strong>as</strong>tal climates but afternoon shade or dappled shade<br />
inland. Needs summer water. Frost hardy to -20F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 5. (AKA: Laurentia fluviatilis, Lobelia<br />
fluviatilis, Pratia pedunculata and Pratia puberula!)<br />

Juncus effusus ‘Bay Blue' bay blue rush<br />
Our west co<strong>as</strong>t native rush, selected for it's rather blue foliage. A tough little guy, forming a tight clump to<br />
about 2 ft tall and wide. Does fine in heavy soils, containers, and can even be submerged to a couple inches<br />
below the water surface. Evergreen foliage, but will be more presentable to company if cleaned up a bit in<br />
spring. Sun to part shade. Hardy to 20 below.<br />
