Native, sprawling, woodland maple, preferring moist shady spots to part sun, but withstands some drought.<br />

Hardier and f<strong>as</strong>ter growing than Japanese maples. Intense late summer to fall color. New Twigs are bright<br />

red in the sun. A beautiful and useful addition to the native garden. To 20-30 ft. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 4<br />

and above.<br />

Acer grandidentatum bigtooth maple<br />

A western segregate <strong>of</strong> A. saccharum, the sugar maple, forming pure stands in the wild from the high, dry<br />

habitat <strong>of</strong> northe<strong>as</strong>tern Mexico to central Utah. A small to medium tree, reaching 15-20 ft tall and wide in the<br />

garden. Deciduous with leaves, 3-5 lobed and deeply cut, that turn brilliant red-orange in autumn. At home in<br />

rocky, well-drained soil. Very drought tolerant once established. Frost hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 4.<br />

Ajuga reptans 'Valfredda' valfredda carpet bugle<br />

This very restrained ajuga deserves a place in your half shade garden or walk. Bright blue flowers cloak the<br />

tiny plants in spring. Tough and vigorous. A nice ground cover to 6" x 6”. Frost hardy to <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 4.<br />

Rounded umbrels <strong>of</strong> large, dark red-purple flowers, beloved <strong>by</strong> hummingbirds and bees, appear in mid to late<br />

summer and turn to showy seeds to add autumn interest. Stems are also dark red, supporting large, handsome,<br />

tropical leaves. Flowers stems can reach 5 ft high above a 2.5 x 2.5 plant. Best in light to medium shade in<br />

good soil with regular summer water. Considered a biennial, but reseeds itself for a continual presence. Frost<br />

hardy in <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 4.<br />

Aquilegia vulgaris 'Leprechaun Gold' variegated columbine<br />

A playful columbine with leaves mixed and spreckled with gold and green creating a bright spot in the shady<br />

garden. Clumps to 18" tall are topped in April with violet purple flowers, a dramatic contr<strong>as</strong>t. Whenever the<br />

foliage looks tired, simply cut to the ground and new, fresh leaves will appear. Sun works on the co<strong>as</strong>t but<br />

light shade is best inland -- in rich soil with regular summer water. Frost hardy to at le<strong>as</strong>t -30F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 4.<br />

Much sought-after and hard to find fern, from Japan and Korea, with handsome evergreen to semi-evergreen<br />

fronds from 1-3 ft, almost frilly in appearance, and forming clumps that reach 2-3 ft wide after many years,<br />

spreading <strong>by</strong> underground rhizomes. For light to deep shade with average summer water. Frost hardy to<br />

-30F, <strong>USDA</strong> <strong>zone</strong> 4.<br />
