2013 school year for its vision and
implementation of digital technology. They join
87 schools that Apple is recognizing nationwide
as exemplary learning environments and centers
of innovation, leadership, and educational
excellence. “Use of the Apple MacBook Air
laptop in the middle grades is a perfect marriage
between instruction and innovation,” said Dr.
Matthew Constant, Owensboro Public Schools
Assistant Superintendent of Technology and
Federal Programs.
The administration and faculty of Owensboro Middle School have exhibited the five best
practices of an Apple Distinguished School: visionary leadership, innovative learning and
teaching, ongoing professional learning, compelling evidence of success, and a flexible
learning environment.
OMS faculty members were surprised with the announcement and celebration of the Apple
Distinguished School designation during a faculty meeting at OMS North Campus on
MacBook Air laptops for use at school and home. Mr. George Powell is principal for both
campuses.
Apple’s education mission is to provide a learning environment that supports the way
students live and how they want to learn. They applaud schools such as Owensboro Middle
School who advance this mission, ensuring that all students are prepared for future success
in work and life.
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES FEB. 6 AND FEB. 11
Parents will have an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers and discuss
progress in their classes on Wednesday, February 6 th and Monday,
February 11 th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. This will be a mid-term report on grades, giving
students three weeks to increase performance before the end of the grading period.
Scheduling in advance is not necessary as parents may come any time during the scheduled
conference period to meet with teachers. However, if a specific time is needed due to
scheduling conflicts, or a parent would like to meet with teachers but cannot come on one of
the scheduled days, a special conference time can be made by simply calling the school at
686-1130. We would like the opportunity to talk to every parent. It takes a joint effort
between school and home to insure student success. Thanks for your help!
schema and to activate it daily. They are learning about the winter season,
measuring what they know and how they grow as they learn new things. The
kindergarteners are also learning to recite their birth dates correctly and some
classrooms will enjoy a birthday party for the whole class at the end of the
month.
2 nd grade: We hope that everyone had a great winter break and are back at
school ready to learn. Please continue to read with your child every chance you
get. The improvements they are making are so exciting! After your child
reads, ask them to talk about what they read. Conversations about what they
are reading will help them improve their comprehension.
3 rd grade: The 3 rd graders are working hard this week on MAPS testing. Please encourage
your child to try to do his/her best!
4 th grade: The 4 th graders are working on getting back into the swing of
school since the holiday break . . . and are really taking off! In math, Mr.
Magill’s mathematicians are learning fun new ways to solve division
writing their opinion about what they have read and researched in events throughout history,
especially WWII and the civil rights movement. The students will MAP test next week, so
we hope all the students will bring their A-game to reach their goal scores!
The flu season has hit earlier this year than usual. The website Flu.gov has some great
information regarding the flu. This link will take you to the caring for someone with the flu
page. On the left side there are tabs you can click that will provide more information on how
to treat the flu and its symptoms. Good frequent hand washing, covering your cough/sneeze
using the inside of your elbow or tissue, and staying home if you are sick are all excellent
ways to help prevent the spread to others.
